Give a man a fish, he can eat for the day.
Teach a man to fish and he can eat forever. Unless the water he fishes has only seasonal runs, the area becomes over-fished the water, polluted or global warming destroys the fishes living environment. Does he live near the water or are there transportation problems?
Give a man 200 lbs of fish, how many days can he eat? It depends without preserving the fish it will spoil in 3 days. Does he dry, pickle, can, salt or freeze the fish? Does he take 1/2 the fish or all the waste and fertilize the soil to start a cycle of growing crops for several years.
Farm Report
What are you growing and harvesting this week? I have fresh onion greens to add to an omelet. Have had frost 4 out 7 days this week. The garden is still not planted, ground is to cold. Not sure if the cherries survived.
These guys will not be bribed into the corral. They have too much fun as I chase them around and around. Insect control team is on the job of keeping fly population down.
Taking a time out from rodent patrol.

Well since we just moved we're getting our
house in order. Mr. Loosinhouse is weeding and turning over the abandoned garden space which has been fallow about ten years. We discovered a huge resident ground hog, since I guess we disrupted his burrow and now we'll have to deal with that. Suggestions? Aside from that, I got an amazing standing garden box with loads of potting soil as a gift which I'm going to use for an herb garden on the back deck.
It's a joke between Mr. L and me how much I love gardening in the abstract, basically reading about gardening while he does the actual labor. So I'm trying to change up that act and went out and bought a great gardening hat, gloves and some shears. I put them on the table and he said "Oh, it's "Barbie Goes Organic" which made me laugh.

I've read up on groundhogs and discovered
they're extremely destructive. A friend told me how years ago farmers paid bounties for groundhog tails. I'm reading how to repel them on the Havahart site.

Perhaps the same in North America? In Europe, though, a hedgehog
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedgehog
In one of Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories, a hedgehog named Stickly-Prickly and a turtle named Slow-and-Solid outwit an easily bamboozled Painted Jaguar and end up acquiring each other’s abilities, turning them both into armadillos.
Not the same critter unless it is a wierd WI
colloquialism. If actually hedgehogs, it is probably targeting released or escaped pets, which would probably lack natural predators and constitute a risk of becoming a runaway invasive.

I have heard that dry ice works on moles and other burrowing
creatures. Drop good sized chunks in each hole entrance you can find. As it sublimates, the CO2, which is heavier than air, sinks into the burrow, displacing the air sufficiently to cause asphyxiation.

Thanks, SOE: Breaking news: MSNBC reporting that
Roger Ailes (formerly of Fox News) has died. Joe Scarborough just announced it.
Aha! Someone else who watches Morning Joe
I'm sort of addicted to it, because it's Party Line central and I get up early everyday and I enjoy watching the talking heads bloviate to each other.
I think it's pretty interesting that Joe and Mika are now engaged and attribute it to propinquity. But I was getting the vibe quite a while ago, basically when Joe kept kidding her about her pets and I thought I detected more than a professional intimacy. He'll have Zbiggy as a father-in-law, the guy who called him "stunningly superficial" to his face in one of the all-time great moments of Morning Joe. To his credit, Joe started making self-deprecating comments about that jibe later.
Now I'm hoping that the entire show will change and become like a 1950's radio couples talk show - taped from their house on the veranda with Joe in a bathrobe and Mika in a feather trimmed peignoir with a pitcher of mimosas on the table. And all their guest should be in morning wear as well - wouldn't that be great?

I listen more than watch. I have no idea how either of them
tolerates the other. Joe is obnoxious and calculated as they come and Mika is, well, Mika.

Third harvest of my oak leaf lettuce
it is about spent now, might bolt with the coming heat. I got about six servings of fresh leaves to top off some beans and rice. Best thing ever for me, fresh food, peace and quiet.
Love the calves they sure are cute and funny. I lived with 'em getting taken to market every year for a while, that was hard, their moms do cry for days after they're gone, still searching. Jesse Amaral, ran the cattle on Bottarini Ranch when I live/worked the fish farm there. He taught my partner and I a lot about raising our pig, was highly respected in the community. That's how I remember him, not the other way.
Good day.

DOJ appoints Bush retread to cover up another flub
Wiki: Federal Bureau of Investigation
But the interesting thing about this is
How is he going to handle the DNC "hacking" when "inside leak" is just as, if not a more viable theory?
IF the whole Trump thing is about Russians Colluding with Trump to swing the election, the DNC piece of the puzzle has to be looked at closely. Will Mueller subpoena their computers (assuming there's anything left to look at, which is doubtful), which raises yet another question - why wouldn't the DNC and the Dems assist in an investigation to bring down Russian interference as much as they possibly could?
I think this whole thing could go into some unpredictable places. I read something the other day which suggested that Comey gave HRC a pass because he knew there was no way in hell an Obama or HRC Justice Department would really prosecute the case and what he did essentially "preserved the case" in case different PTBs chose to follow up on it later. I have to admit this scenario never occurred to me - I have no idea how plausible a theory this is.

I have heard that he was once competent counsel.
This means that he knows what evidence is. That means that the oppo research "dossier" and the CIA hand-waving blather go directly into the toilet, and what's left? Whatever the feebs turn up.
For decades now, the feebs primary investigative prowess, in no particular order, consists of:
1) Frame-ups, pseudo-science, lying and misrepresentation, concealment of evidence, and the like
2) use of (usually suborned) snitches
3) busting those entrapped or otherwise set-up by undercover provocateurs
So, where does that leave this "investigation"?

good morning SoE and all
My internet is still intermittent, but while it is happening this AM thought I would drop in and say "Hey."
We've been eating lettuce out of the garden for about a month. Onions are about ready to harvest. Snow peas are coming in too. Everything but sweet potatoes and okra are planted and we hope to get them in this week. Off to the Florida Folk festival next week.
Hope your gardens are all fruitful and fertile. All the best....

Good morning, SOE ~
Our garlic is ahead of schedule due to our warm winter. We've been getting unseasonable rain, too. It's cold today, though, and will be most of the week. Been eating greens - spinach, kale and the like - for a couple months now. Nothing in the ground yet - still too cool. We'll be planting at the end of May/beginning of June.
Have a beautiful day, folks!
