The Success Story of The Neocons and Neoliberals

Success I say, it has gone exactly as planned

Note the era of the Great Depression, look familiar?

It is a truly global strategy

Households with more than a million (US) dollars in private wealth are projected to own 46 percent of global private wealth in 2019 according to a new report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

This large percentage, however, only includes cash, savings, money market funds and listed securities held through managed investments—collectively known as “private wealth.” It leaves out businesses, residences and luxury goods, which comprise a substantial portion of the rich’s net worth.

At the end of 2014, millionaire households owned about 41 percent of global private wealth, according to BCG. This means that collectively these 17 million households owned roughly $67.24 trillion in liquid assets, or about $4 million per household.

In total, the world added $17.5 trillion of new private wealth between 2013 and 2014. The report notes that nearly three quarters of all these gains came from previously existing wealth. In other words, the vast majority of money gained has been due to pre-existing assets increasing in value—not the creation of new material things.

The bolding is mine since the exclusions are important.

There has been no change in the trends.

Trumps proposed tax cuts will only increase the rate of change.

In 2016

The combined wealth of the richest 1 percent will overtake that of the other 99 percent of people next year unless the current trend of rising inequality is checked, Oxfam warned today ahead of the annual World Economic Forum meeting in Davos.

Reagan sold this supply side economic bullshit 40 years ago, tax cuts have never paid for themselves, it's more like asset stripping 101.

Then of course there are xenophobic walls to be built and ever so sexy stuff for mass murdering to be bought.

Someone mentioned investment in infrastructure I suppose that money will just magically appear.

I wonder where the bills will land,oh I know.

Why? Because those at the top keep pouring their ill-gotten gains into a bigger glass so nothing ever spills out. Why else do you think they keep telling us they need to lower taxes?

Outsourcing Is Treason's picture

The CEO of a large company I worked for in the 70s and 80s told me that the company's wealth was created by the people who design, make, market, sell, and service the company's products. In other words, workers are the wealth creators. This vast wealth then gets sucked up by greedy investors / share holders while the workers struggle to feed their hungry families. We need a system that distributes the wealth to those who deserve it more.

Another conversation I would like to have is why they lump 1 million with the Kochs, Soros, Trump billions.

Once upon a time, a second income in a couple of good jobs with a lot of good budgeting and restrained spending could result in the neighbor next door eventually accumulating net assets worth a million. This is no way equates to Trump Towers, multi-million dollar, staffed houses in multiple continents, private jets, fleets of private cars with drivers, crown jewels, etc. Yet, the data always places them both on the charts in the same place. I think it is deliberate obfuscation meant to divide and conquer.

@Big Al

We've allowed an economic system, capitalism, to morph into a showcase of the human tendencies for wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony.

No "morph" required. Those features are inherently part of capitalism from second 1.

Don't forget that capitalism is what free enterprise deteriorates into, once the more-successful acquire enough wealth they don't need right now to start buying protection against their competitors. Once that happens, it isn't free enterprise any more, but it is definitely capitalism as we know it today!

Violent protests in France, do they make a difference? Looks like yeah, if the pols can't sit at their desks and work, that is direct action. Why aren't the police just beating the shit out of everybody, pepper-spray and stuff? It's the voters students (don't know if they vote or not) throwing smoke bombs! Wow.

@eyo the only "violence" I see is destruction of property. While that isn't the optimum what can these bastards expect? They keep on pushing, pushing, pushing and lying over and over again and people see NOTHING changes. The PTB are the ones we can thank for the "violence" not the protestors, they're only doing the last damned thing they can to call attention to the corrupt and dying system of neo-liberalism. As far as property rights, I for one am getting real sick and tired of hearing how important those are while people starve.

Neo-liberalism isn't even ailing, which is why folks have to resort to violent protest to call attention to it and what it's doing to all of us!

No, the foundation of civilization is the passing of knowledge from one generation to another.

I do not pretend I know what I do not know.

@detroitmechworks I imagine like most Americans when I first heard that concept there was a sort of knee jerk "well, property rights are earned," it took some thought for me to work that out of my head. But now I see that for what it is - one more privatization that TAKES from others all for itself. And while property destruction is not really a good thing, I'm getting to the point where I'm OK with "anarchists" or whatever they are smashing a few windows. IF that is what our plutocrats want, and they seem to want it as they'll do nothing to fix the underlying cause, then let them have it. What else are people with NO power supposed to do, just roll over and take it?

@CB with him on is those pitchforks won't get him or his - they have mercenaries to prevent just such an occurrence. The real risk, in my mind, is once again those who are in the middle, not rich enough to provide for their own security, but have just enough to warrant a pitchfork. And I think our plutocrats are very well aware of that.

The plutocracy has invested OUR money into Homeland Security in order to protect them from the torches and pitchforks. I doubt if they will listen to him.

But at least he was honest about how the majority of the 0.01% actually got their wealth. Even Bill Gates got a huge boost from the luck of his mother having connections with the CEO of IBM and a bunch of buddies that had more technical knowledge than he did.

@lizzyh7 The upper middle class is going to be surprised. And frankly, the politicians and pundits among them are going to be the most surprised of all.

I wonder if the CBC, for instance, really understands the role they and theirs are going to be expected to play. They don't seem to; they seem to think they can earn a place in whatever flotilla of lifeboats (bunkers, space stations, etc.) the 1% intends to use when the shit hits the fan.

Or maybe they don't even understand that the shit will hit the fan.

@CB Hell, Microsoft and Apple got the idea for their operating systems from Xerox of all places. Jobs and Gates both got rich off the backs of others and took all the fuckin' credit. Not to mention both had lived relatively privileged lives before making the big bucks. Heck, you could say that about almost every tech 'guru' from the 80s onward.

You can never have too many graphs. Go here.
It's NYT and it's from 2014. HT to Conrad Hackett for retweeting it.

Back in the 1940s, '50s and '60s, most of the income gains experienced during expansions — the periods from the trough of one recession until the onset of another — accrued to most of the people. That is to say, the bottom 90 percent of earners captured at least a majority of the rise in income.
With each expansion in sequence, however, the bottom 90 percent captured a smaller share of income gains and the top 10 percent captured more.
Fast-forward to the 1990s and early 2000s expansions, and a new pattern emerged, with the huge majority of income gains going to the top 10 percent, leaving pocket change for everybody else. From 2001 to 2007, 98 percent of income gains accrued to the top 10 percent of earners, Ms. Tcherneva found, basing her analysis on data from Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez, the academics who have made a speciality in documenting the rise of income inequality around the world.
