Impromptu Open Thread - What's new at c99p
Good morning folks.
Here's a quick roundup of recent changes here at our little Hernando's Hideaway.
Of course there's the new comment layout which I'm sure you've all noticed by now. The comments nesting correctly makes for a much more coherent system.
The mobile format is much better, it's not exactly the way I want it yet but it's getting close. Now that I have some of the other loose ends taken care of I can devote more time to the responsive aspects.
Did you notice the green lock in the address bar. Yup, the site is now encrypted with a SSL Certificate. The "not secure" warnings on the login page should be gone now and you can safely logon from anywhere as all data sent from the site is encrypted.
That's about it for now. I'll try to answer questions in the comments, but I have a busy day ahead of me.
Comments
Thanks for the encryption
Since I'm living an all cash existence, I'll send another donation via my S.O.s credit card. As long as it gets there. I may begin snail mail w/check though. Thanks for the upgrade for snail mail, btw.

Thanks earthling1
I certainly appreciate it. The monthly pledges have dropped to about half of what they were initially and the one time donations have slowed up considerably.
Any little bit helps, thanks.
@JtC
Cash.me at... cash.me is another great one-time place. Easy to set up, just need a smart phone (or email addy if no smart phone), and a debit card. No debit card? Get a pre-pay card at a big box. No password to forget as code is sent to your phone (or email) to send or receive $$. Very easy! Takes less than 3 mins. to set up.

As a public service...
I would like to direct you to the top left corner of the page(under the search box).
Where a nice yellow button will take you to a magical place were you can opt to support C99P with a generous contribution.
You can even opt to do so on a regular monthly basis. It's fun and all the cool kids are doing it. No peer pressure tho.
Just sayin.
Edited for new information...thanks JtC
I want a Pony!
Thank you Arrow for the public service announcement...
it's greatly appreciated.
PayPal no longer supports monthly recurring payments, but monthly payments can be made by using a "Subscription" service, I need to set it up though. I'll do that soon as we are planning a fund raiser for the near future.
A year ago when the Great Migration occurred, I paid the site's hosting bill for a year in advance. That year long bill ran out last month, so I'm paying the hosting bill month by month now. We are planning a fundraiser in hopes of raising enough funds to pay the bill for at least 6 months in advance, 12 months would be even better if possible.
Thanks again, Arrow.
Waitaminnit, here, since when?
They allegedly sent mine on 3/13. Is this as of the end of the month or what?

You can no longer...
set up new recurring payments but they still honor those that were already created. Any recurring payment plans made in the past are still good.
Once I set up the subscription service then monthly payments can be made though it. It's the same as the old recurring payment system, only different.
Ah, ok thanks JtC
Good to know. I'll be delighted to switch to direct donations to the site. Thank you!
@JtC Last Friday (24th)
the original due date. You should contact Caucus99percent.com Administrator to
pay what you owe.'
Usually my payment goes through around the 12-13 of the month. I was going to call up Pay Pal (I do not have an account there, so this gets weird, and it seems calling is the only option) to see what was up on Monday or Tuesday...

Hi Sima...
From my experience when that happens it's due to your credit card either expiring or you changed cards and PayPal can no longer process the original info given them.
Thanks Sima.

Yes...
Give them a call, they have very good phone support, I call them all the time. Only they can straighten it out.
Thanks.
Called them.

Yeah, same here
My automatic donation to c99p for March was deducted from my checking account - I sure hope JtC received it!!
I've gotten no notice from PayPal that they are canceling it. At least not that I noticed, although I do get a lot of spam from them and tend to delete their emails without reading.
I would love to not use PayPal anymore to make my recurring donation here, but didn't want to cancel it without a better alternative. I guess I better find out what's happening.
Hi CS...
as far as I know PayPal has no plans to cancel recurring payments created under the old system. I was quite upset when they changed the PayPal payments page and stopped the recurring payment plan, and I called them and let them know in no uncertain terms. But I also found out that monthly payments can be set up with their subscription program, which i need to set up.
You can also make automatic direct bank transfer payments by using PopMoney. PM me if your interested in that. I'll also update our "Payments" page to reflect on how to use PopMoney.
Thanks.
Hi JtC and everyone. Late as usual - Central European
If there is going to be something better which does not require JtC to interrupt his work, I'm all for it.
Also, please count me in if there is an effort under way to fund raise for this site. I am behind the effort all the way. JtC put me on your list if I may be of service.
This is a public service and an open, safe place to write, explore, theorize, tell stories, share beauty as we find it. It and we deserve to help JtC out with a truly livable sum and money for site work and maintenance.
You may choose to look the other way, but you can never say again you did not know. ~ William Wiberforce
If you can donate, please! POP Money is available for bank-to-bank transfers. Email JtC to make a monthly donation.
Thank you LCH...
I was going to say good morning, but I doubt that would be correct for central Europe.
Thank you for your continued support via PopMoney, I really appreciate it.
Maybe I'm giving the wrong impression about a subscription service. It is also a PayPal service that requires a separate button for folks to use.
Thanks again.
We have regular
We have regular monthly contributors using PayPal,
so that is an option unless C-99 would rather not. That option no longer available, apparently, except via subscription.
We send our would-be recurring contributors to Patreon where contributions are then automatically forwarded to our PayPal account every month.

Mornin', JtC and everybody.
SSL - cool.
Something I realized recently is that if you keep some of the menu items collapsed in the left column, if you keep "Site Menu" collapsed you will not see the notification if you get a message. So, just a tip to open it every now and then and check.
Morning OLinda...
Good tip, thanks. You can also tell if you have a new message in the "Message" link in the header menu at the top of every page. The "new message" reminder shows in both places.
@JtC
Oh, thanks, JtC. I didn't know it showed on the top menu too. I guess my tip can be disregarded.
I'm glad you...
posted that tip, some folks may not realize about the dropdown sidebar menus or the "Messages" link in the header menu, so it's all good.
Thread layout looks great, Johnny.
And the two reply choices, I think, are clearer now.
Thanks for the nice touchups to our house!

Thanks for all you do!
Just happy that we're still here and kicking.
I really love the people here, and the community is vibrant and very much alive.
Opinions are fairly varied, and I love the fact that disagreement occurs, but has none of the Rancor you see elsewhere on political sites. (For the Most part.)
Thank you, I appreciate the hard work, and thanks for giving me a place to vent my political frustrations.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
Thank you dmw...
I'm glad you're here too, as you're one of the original crew, before the Migration. Hard to believe that was a year ago already, no?
Glad to be here.
As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I've been physically falling apart and just haven't felt the writing bug recently. Happy with RL, but damn... pain is distracting.
Actually was thinking about penning an essay on the "Pain as a planned distraction" theory of government. Makes as much sense as any for the constant denial of healthcare.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
Pain
Acupuncture is supposed to work for pain. Here's a story. I was seeing an acupuncturist for anxiety (they claim they can cure anything with their needles!). I was desperate. The day before the second session I called him up to cancel because I was battling a cold with a terrible cough. He said, no, come in, "I can relieve that cough". I thought, nonsense. It frickin' stopped the cough! Crazy. I don't get it. [But anyways, the needles did nothing for my anxiety. It turns out it was my kidneys; overloaded, congested. It took about 6 months of 3/4 gallon of water every morning and 1/2 tsp baking soda in water at night. The kidneys needed the water to do its thing and the baking soda aided their alkalizing duty. Thanks internet! Cost me a buck for the baking soda.
But hey, acupuncture is something I will try if needed for pain down the road. And there's no reason you can't do it yourself. It's just little tiny needles in right spots. Like feet/ankle, arms and face. It's not surgery.
Glad you got relief from one of your ailments
P.S. Kudos for a fine job JtC. I am a proud member of c99.
Navigation difficulties on mobile
On my cell phone screen, the text in menus below aticles is not wrapping properly behaving instead as though there is a hard return at every spacing break so that, for example, a comment title appears like:

As an FYI, here is an update on our Open Threads. M- F evenings is Evening Blues. We have a morning open thread seven days a week. Our morning contributors are:
Monday - EL
Tuesday - MfQ
Wednesday - CStS
Thursday - studentofearth
Friday - Tim
Saturday - EL
Sunday - Lookout
We also have a Facebook page for c99, and I regularly post diaries from the front page of c99 to c99's Facebook page. If you are on Facebook, please like us, share us, and help us grow. OPOL has been very helpful in sharing our posts and helping us to get our essays out.
Occasionally, I try to transfer our front paged diaries to Twitter. We have no c99 Twitter page. They are currently just on my dkmich twwitter account. I started with "#c99:" and changed to "caucus99:" once I realized someone else was also using c99. If anyone wants to help promote us on Twitter, just use your own account. Use the transfer icon at the top of the essay and insert "#caucus99:" (without the quotes) as the very first thing in the tweet.
Thanks for all you do Johnny. I just sent a donation your way.

PayPal is not doing monthly donations now?
Mine to c99 has been coming out regularly on the 15th. I will eagle eye next month. This is a great site for us nearly shut-ins. PS, my new cast is wet. I am so bad!
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
Good afternoon rl...
No, your monthly recurring payments are fine, PayPal no longer accepts new recurring plans.
To make monthly payments now I have to set up a subscription plan which will have it's own button. Before you had to make a recurring plan by clicking the "Donate" button, in the future there will be two buttons, a "Donate" button for one time payments and a "Subscription" button for recurring monthly contributions.
Your old plan is fine right now so no need to worry about it.
Hope you get better soon!
Having some serious trouble sending you a PM
I'm on android and have tried punching in you name (JtC) and I just get a history of you of posts.
Also tried tapping your initial and it takes me to my own profile page.
Really need that snail mail address and to conferr with you regarding a gardening group site.
Spring is here. And you need the money, too. Also.
Help.

Hi earthling1...
because of a security program that I use clicking my username doesn't work. If you want to send me a PM go to the private message page and click "Write new message". Then type my username, JtC, in the "To" box and then send the message. It will work that way.
Thanks JtC
Now to figure out where to access your PM reply.
Back to message board, I presume.

yep
you'll see a new message reminder in the "Messages" link. Then click the link and you'll see the reply.
Ok

See how adaptable most of us have been?
For the most part minor changes, but on some sites the howls would begin. What a pleasant but bumpy group! Variety is the spice of life, or something.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
Thank you bigly...
to all who have sent donations today. If a note isn't included to clue me in as to who sent the payment, they I usually can't tell who sent it. So if I don't thank you personally that's why.
With that in mind, I thank you all very very much for contributing, you know who you are.
Compliments on the site design.
It is tasteful and unobtrusive, and I think, inviting. Very easy to read. Personally, I find the interactions between members to be compelling. I think the design has something to do with the overall tone, which is considered and thoughtful. Comments are trending longer and more generous with links and explanations. At the same time, there is a decided lack of fear in the room, which increases the range and depth of topics to explore. Many cannot be discussed openly at other forums, and I imagine they are read with interest by the studio audience.
How is readership these days?
One feature I like is gone. I was using "Recent Comments" under the Navigation menu. My visits are usually short. I use that feature to get a snapshot view of where people are gathered when I arrive and what they are thinking and talking about in that moment. Is it hiding somewhere else?
[Edit]
"Recent Comments" seems to be back in the regular sidebar menu. So scratch that.
Thanks P...
for the kind words, I take your opinion to heart.
Readership is down from what it was a year ago, but I don't think that's a bad thing. Readership is down on all left-o-sphere blogs for obvious reasons. I think we are down to the core membership that pretty much view things as as the original group envisioned them, and I include you as an integral part of that original group. I like to think of us as a group of hard cores.
For various reasons some have moved on. The cause of the huge influx last March, Bernie Sanders supporters, and his defeat in the primaries, I point to as the main source of many folks not participating as much here as before. And the general political malaise that hangs over the country and the world. Social media is also certainly a factor. All in all I'm more comfortable with the lower traffic, it's certainly easier on my nerves.
A few weeks ago we were experiencing some CPU overload and I disabled the Recent Comments in the Navigation menu in hopes of relieving some of the excess overload. I wasn't really sure if anyone really even used that page.
But I'll tell you what, things have calmed down and the site is running fairly well, so I'll re-enable the Recent Comments page and see how it goes.
Thanks for the input, my dear old friend, I treasure it.
Just wanted to say thanks
Just wanted to say thanks ever so much, JtC; as a computer illiterate, I've been scared to try logging in here and have been feeling rather as though my air supply was cut off, lol.
And I wish I could send more concrete support, but somehow a little over $8000 a year isn't enough to actually squeak by on to begin with, with just room-rent taking over half of that, and is gone before I get it... sure would if I could! This site and the amazing people it attracts provides me with most of what little hope I can find anywhere.
Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.
A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.
I'm glad you find "hope" here.
I read around quite a bit, and while reality is trending hard just about everywhere, I think this community is among the first to hit the wall, crushed against it by the hoards following. They are the first to see the illusion of choice and self-determination disappear; the first to see they are unrepresented and have been so for a very long time, the first to regret paths not taken that are no longer there.
I find security in the growing confirmation of those realities, but I also find hope. I like the wisdom that settles over the first shocks. I like the dogged perseverance with eyes wide open. I like the complaints and rants that come from a true and natural place. (I even like the normalcy of those who want to try again political mechanisms that clearly no longer work in a totalitarian system with a deliberately misinformed population.) I suspect what goes on here is helping many others come to grip with an unexpected future they were not intellectually invested in. There is surely hope in all that.
@Pluto's Republic
Indeed! And the ability to speak freely without censure or censorship (albeit with deft and appropriate moderation) allows for an open and resilient/adaptable society with more and more varied information and potential explanations/solutions visible, importantly continuing the broadening of informed perspective so essential to understanding and solution-seeking.
Honestly, the essayists/commenters here form an informative pool of sanity more refreshing than any I've encountered elsewhere. And I couldn't be more grateful fot it!

You're welcome Ellen...
and I'm glad to see you logged back in.
This site is supported by people power, donations are what keep us lit up. I only ask that members contribute what they can afford. If anyone is tapped out and can't afford to donate that's perfectly fine, I can't stress that enough.
Thanks, my friend.
