Basic Reason to Block Trump SCOTUS Pick: Justice

(Analysis.) Many liberal thinkers have put forth good reasons for senators to reject President Trump's nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. People for the American Way, one of a coalition of groups that delivered block-Gorsuch petitions with one million online signatures, cited his ...

troubling views and record when it comes to siding with wealthy and powerful interests, over the rights of working people, women, and the disabled.

And the Daily Kos action page sizes up Gorsuch as

a right-wing ideologue ... who, based on his record and writings, would likely:

  • end a woman's right to choose;
  • eviscerate what remains of the Voting Rights Act;
  • send clean water and clean air laws to the scrap heap;
  • uphold extreme Republican gerrymanders; and
  • give corporations unchecked power.

Those are good arguments to use in a normal Supreme Court nomination. But this is not a normal nomination -- this is theft of a Supreme Court seat in progress.

Republican senators shirked their Constitutional duty by denying, for nearly a year, even a hearing to Merrick Garland, President Obama's pick for this Supreme Court seat. They should not now be rewarded by getting to seat their own Supreme Court judge -- not Gorsuch, nor any other.

As Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) wrote:

Filling this stolen seat with any individual other than Judge Garland will destroy Americans’ respect for the court.

Treating this nomination like the others that came before Judge Garland would effectively ratify the theft of the seat. That’s why I’m determined to vote against Judge Gorsuch and to maintain the 60-vote threshold met by President Obama’s two court nominees, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor.

If Democratic Senators of the Judiciary Committee are also determined to vote against Gorsuch, or any Trump pick, then they should not waste time by attending the confirmation hearings. The best way forward now may be for President Trump to withdraw his nominee, and put forth one approved by Democrats. The Democratic senators of the Judiciary Committee could provide a helpful list.

The issue is not the qualifications or political slant of the nominee. The issue is justice.

If no one sends a message, does the tree falling in a forrest make a sound? Smile

Gorsuch and the other one o'bummers nominated need to tighten their greek garments.

Both Congress, the Senate, and POTUS need a vacation from attempting to run government as a business, especially like a vulture capitalist business. If R voters can't see the foolishness, then consign them to their fate and be sure to let them know, they asked for the bells on their collars so they wouldn't feel spooked.

Goodness knows; hard work is it's own reward. Work until your hands bleed. Fortune never visits upon them. Somehow, their works will save them. Should misfortune fall upon their number: That one wasn't praying hard enough. Maybe some foreigner from some foreign land that just perhaps doesn't even know a word of Thanks in 'merican might get some help, while they sit staring, proudly at the empty cupboard. In the land of this much oppulance for the few and want for the many, but the answer eludes them. It is intangible. Unimaginable where all the tax $s went and the revenues from the stripped natural resources. Oligarches, laugh: It may be the last for you as well.

Never mind any of that. Back to the programming - hate on transgenders, liberals with their open mindedness, and the promiscuous. Never mind that your rights are stripped, the Commons are auctioned off to cronies. Keep distracted until the theft is complete

His facial expressions are priceless I think. I want to say "quick everyone, watch every day" before he jumps the shark, because he is so right on it is sure to happen. This is his time, and he is shining in it. Go Jimmy.

Sign the Petition!? Yet another database! That Democrats can't secure! Nope, no thanks. No more lists, no more petitions, that is the fake stuff rotting on the corpse of democracy, let it go. Facelifts ain't gonna help.

@eyo thanks for Jimmy, love him and he's so right. And really, when he points out how no Democrat made much noise about Garland, that just confirms for me that Dems never had any intention of "resisting" the worst of Trump. Why should they? Their donors are happy, they're happy.

Quoting Daily Kos immediately impugns your credibility. But even worse than that, launching a jihad against a fairly mundane Republican nominee is sure to rebound the next time there's a Democratic president. Save your faux outrage for the wackos like Bork and the unqualified like Miers. Your attempt to force Garland in will cause more harm than good.

All along there's been this push to get progressives to support Obama's pick of a 'corporate-friendly' Republican Supreme Court Judge evidently acceptable to his billionaire/corporate masters, and it continues under what seems to not be entirely new billionaire/corporate management.

The best that could be hoped for would be the successful block of the appointment of any Supreme Court Judge who will act against the public interest and the principles of democracy, rather than add another majority Supreme Court vote to the self-interests both in and out of politics out to destroy the very concept of civilization en route to eliminating life on the planet for profit.

That might help at least stall some of the Supreme Court legal precedents waiting to be created with the above aim.

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.
