Northern Syrians are not demanding a separate state from Syria
One wonders how many who support, as I do, a Free Palestine, and denounce Israel's occupation of, ethnic cleansing and apartheid of the Palestinian people will in the next breath denounce the Kurdish people's century long battle for justice and equality.
The Syrian ARAB Republic and the Syrian ARAB Army abandoned the Kurdish people, the other many ethnicities in northern Syria to Daesh and Turkish supported mercenary headchoppers. The Kurds and the northern Syrian people of all ethnicities and religious beliefs have driven ISIS back to the southern bank of the Euphrates and deserve not only our respect, but our support as revolutionaries.
The Northern Syrians are not demanding a separate state from Syria, they are demanding a respect for their rights to self-government within the Syrian State based on their charter which was voted on: a nearly stateless entity with power vested in each village, neighborhood and cooperative they have liberated and strictly protecting the rights of all ethnicities, religious beliefs and gender identities.
While I have vehemently opposed, over my entire lifetime, the USA meddling in the affairs of other countries and regions, and all proxy wars, in this case where northern Syrians were abandoned by their own nation state, invaded by Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and NATO and their Daesh and FSA head-chopping allies, I believe, and my country, Bolivia, believes, that they have a right to ask any country to come to their aid in defeating invaders. That now includes not only the USA, but also neighboring Iraq, and now also Russia and the Syrian Arab Republic.
After Daesh, Al Qaedah and Turkish invaders are crushed and ground into dog shit then it will be time for all Syrian people to negotiate a one-state solution guaranteeing equality and justice for all Syrian ethnicities, religions and gender identities within the governing paradigm of each region. Syrians, north, south, east, west are in dire straits and
genocide, mass murders by the state or the PTB--or anyone, for that matter--are an abomination. I fear for everyone in Syria. All of it is heartbreaking. Thank you for a wonderful essay.
As an aside, terms like ethnic cleansing and extermination are, to me, both awful. They imply the victims are dirt or vermin/insects. In both cases, heinous people, Hitler/Nazis and, I think, Milošević, came up with them. People in U.S. government and media repeated them, seemingly without thinking about the plain meanings of the terms they were repeating. I think we ought not automatically adopt the monsters' own euphemisms for their heinous actions.
Both cleansing and occasional extermination are very necessary for healthful living. Genocide could not be more inconsistent with healthy living. The same for mass murder, mass homicide, slaughter and massacre. Those kinds of things are what we are talking about, not good hygiene. (Sorry for the rant. I feel so strongly about this that I can't shut up.)

At present it doesn't matter much if the US throw the Kurds and other northern Syrians under the bus. The multi-ethnic northern Syrians have 70,000 men under arms, they believe in what they are fighting for, are protecting their own homes, and well equipped for defense. They are also veterans of four years of combat where they have made vulture puke out of Daesh. Also they are pretty well allied with the Russians and in a negotiated peace with the Syrian Arab Republic.
In fact, I believe they would be best off kicking out the USians, just holding back on Raqqa, moving to the northern bank of the Euphrates, rebuilding their infrastructure, fortifying their positions and letting the Syrian Army take care of the south bank. JMHO.

Very very simplified
Yes the Syrian Arab Republic is the government of Syria whose elected President is Assad. The SAA is the Syrian Arab Army, that is the army that has Assad as commander and chief.
Rojava is the Kurdish name for Kurdish areas of Syria. Thus we have the "Rojava Revolution" which is based on a revolutionary communitarian anarchist system written about by Bookchin and Ocalan. The Rojava Revolution has expanded far beyond the Kurdish areas and now includes all the different ethnicities in the north of Syria, including Arabs and is now called the Northern Syrian Federation and its military wing is called the Syria Democratic Forces or SDF.
OK, the situation on the ground is that the SDF is being backed up by USA Special Forces and heavy weapons supplied to the Arab brigades of the SDF.
The SAA is fighting with Russians, Iranians and Hezbollah forces.
Both are fighting both ISIS and the Al Qaedah/Turkish alliance but have no explicit alliance except around Manbij where the SDF affiliated local Rojava Council has invited both the SAA & Russians and the USA to protect their border areas from the Al Qaedah/Turkish alliance while they liberate (I use the word advisedly) Raqqa and Deir Ezzor, thus wiping ISIS off the map in Syria.
To annihilate ISIS in Raqqa the SAA & Russian troops will follow the south bank of the Euphrates while the SDF & USA will (they already have actually) move along the north bank thus squeezing Isis like a cockroach between a shoe and the floor. BUT! Once again, there is no explicit alliance and Assad yesterday said that the USA were invaders but hopes to work with the USA President, whose name, if I remember correctly, is Trump.

for all of this. As an American trying to keep up with what is going on, for whatever reason I am familiar with the term SAA, but hadn't seen the term, Syrian Arab Republic. I am so skeptical of my government's connections to various terrorist groups who change their names on a regular basis that I'm never sure who is who. Thank you for clarifying who the SDF is.
I am adding bold type to the parts you have clarified for me. Thank you especially for this:
Because I had read that my government has been arming the SDF, I wasn't sure if it was an Al Qaeda affiliate or someone connected to the Kurds. This is just the point. All this time it has seemed that the CIA or some other quasi-military entity has been arming Al Qaeda at the same time other parts of our military have been actually trying to defeat ISIS.
So at this point the USA is having to stand against the Al Qaedah/Turkish alliance, finally, which is a big change and may signify our military fighting against our covert ops.

Oh, I seriously object to a multi-ethnic country being called officially as the name of the majority ethnicity, or calling a country by the majority religion (a "Jewish" State of Israel, the Blahblahstan "Islamic" Republic. Thats why I call the Kurdish plurality forces in northern Syria by their proper name "SDF", not "the Kurds".
