Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
I assume you're saying the sidebar material has moved under the Navigation tab? It's nice and clear, there.
When I turn to landscape for the comments (they get very small in portrait), I lose half or more of the comment author, and can't expand to get it all. Not deadly - I can see the writer in portrait format.

Like the drop down idea a lot, very clean and fast.
From the perspective of my Windows PC at least, I think you can also afford a wider sidebar (maybe 50 - 75 pixels or so?) which would also give you a few pixels for sidebar margin spacing and shorten the columns a bit.
Just a thought.

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?
I have thought about a little padding on the sides of the sidebar text though. I'll try that eventually.

My avatar pic is square which makes it wider than most, so my comments look like they are nested as replies rather than original thread comments.
If you force a standard width (maybe 100 px) for avatar pics, then all the comments should line up correctly.
(Not trying to nit pick man, but I done a fair amount of web usability consulting in my time. Force of professional habit.)

@Not Henry Kissinger
and can force a standard size for avatars. The username also influences the indent, especially the long ones. I can reduce the pixel size of the username text but that then raises an issue for mobile users to read the usernames.
I can gain a few pixels by adjusting the padding.

@JtC
I think the bigger problem is that the avatars are on the left, which forces the text even further to the right. I wonder if it would look better with the avatars either on the right, the way the old layout was, or flush left on top of the text.
The site is also not resizing gracefully on my phone. It's stock Android, but I'm running the AdBlock Plus browser. Just a data point, in case others are having problems with the site not shrinking to fit immediately upon loading on mobile.

glad gator reporter is coming back. You are making great changes, JtC. Really terrific. But we don't want to throw any allibabies out with the bathwater. Thanks for all you're doing.

that is one of my photoshop creations, as is the protesting Buddha. The alligator image is a gator reporter typing on a typewriter.
Not being the least bit tech savvy, I am in awe of how quickly you can respond to user identified problems. This site looks so clean and modern, and it has been done without losing any functionality. A big thumbs up to you, JtC!

Very Nice upgrade.
The collapsible side bar groups is a perfect solution.
My only suggestion the page footer (black box at the bottom) could be reduced to a horizontal list of links. And just put the privacy policy and other verbiage on a separate page. The footer seems too big as is (IMHO).
Edit: Opps this was intended as a comment to JTC. But I agree with you gulfgal, JTC and the team are doing a great job.

@Citizen Of Earth
notice your comment number under your avatar. The size of your avatar pushed the indent over beneath GG's comment, making it look like a reply to her.
I plan on addressing the indent thing eventually. I'll start by standardizing the avatar images.

@JtC
Haha. So that's what happened.
Yes, a standard image size is a good idea.

It will take some getting used to. But Yes.

This works well with my iPad.
kool
can you collapse the blog roll too? It will bring up the remaining items at the bottom.

Yes...
I can collapse all of it.
zippy fast navigation
Nice!
The roll ups work very well. Really fast, and neat.
This is all on an Apple Mac Mini with large monitor. Will check the iPad next time I use it.

but it can core a apple...
Very nice!
Thank you!

Scroll down in portrait mode...
the sidebar is below the main content.
There's only so much room on a phone interface.
Cool beans!
A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.

a premium for mobile users.

Does Drupal have any plugins or other tweaks that can give you some responsive capability?

Yes...
already implemented, check the site out on a phone or tablet.
Standardize avatar pic width.

So are you saying...
I need to change my name and pic?

Or...
I can try to force the usernames to word wrap, but that doesn't solve it for the long names with no breaks in the characters.

I know it's silly, but
I miss the alligator playing the piano.
It added an analog look to this now even slicker looking site. It's a kind of trademark, no?
As I said, silly. Otherwise, the collapsible sidebar topics are awesome.
By the way, Obama just commuted Chelsea Manning's sentence.
I like the alligator too...
that is one of my photoshop creations, as is the protesting Buddha. The alligator image is a gator reporter typing on a typewriter.
I'll put them both back in the sidebar somewhere.
gjohnsit just put up an essay about Chelsea.
yay!
