c99p site upgrade update
Good morning folks
After a couple of weeks of tweaking, code patching, squishing bugs, and general clean up, I finally finished getting the site in tip top shape after the recent software upgrade. Getting that done allowed me to concentrate on the new site layout which you are using right now.
All functions and features are still present, although you may need to get used to where they have been moved to. Many have been moved to the "Navigation" dropdown menu in the header. It may take a while, but I guarantee you'll get used to it.
The comment section has had a major upgrade. When you now make a reply to another comment "Reply to: username" will automatically appear in the subject line. You may add additional text after the "Reply to:" if you want or you may also remove it all together.
Also take note of the parent link that is now included. You'll see it right at the beginning of the comment body. it will appear as a number when you are using the comment editor, but after you publish it will change to a link to the parent comment. Please don't remove this number when writing your comment or the parent link will be lost to all subsequent readers. If you mouse hover over the parent link in any comment you'll see a popup box that displays the parent comment. Also if you click the parent link in any comment it will take you to the parent comment, click the back button in your browser to get back to where you were before.
To the left of the comments you'll see the user names/avatars, under that you'll see that every comment is now assigned a number for easy referencing.
I also added a large gold "NEW" text in every new comment. Hopefully this will make it easier to spot the new comments.
You also should notice a definite improvement on mobile devices. Those of you that use phones and pads please give me some feedback.
Please keep in mind that I still have a lot of tweaking left to do on this interface and will be working on it in the future.
I hope you enjoy it

Why did the formatting trick work here initially?

RIP, when you edit a comment it doubles up on the "Reply to:" and the parent link. You can remove the extra ones when you edit.
Reply to: JtC
I caught that during the testing and found a way to defeat that. So, the question is will it still work.
And now the more important question is, Does this trick foulup the works?
I can easily defeat the multiple edit tagging. but I have been defeated in my quest to control formatting at the zeroth level.
If this works, I will be happy. YES, thanks for restoring my mojo, JtC

I would like to write a simple statement: To makeappear you type "@#1.1". but every time I type "@#1.1" it resolves to . The only way that seems to work is to type "@#1.1" but that is so very not right, in so many ways. I need to be able to type long strings for which spacing is an issue.Sigh, I am defeated.@#1.1 produces @#1.1 which then renders as

Reply to: JtC - Why can't NEW be red?
Plus the hex is #FF0000 which Trump would pronounce foo, and that rhymes with new. Whereas, orange just reminds me of fascism for some reason. LOL! I'm just kidding around.
Thank you so much JtC. Thanks for creating the space where people can talk and learn and be who they are without too much hassle. Thanks a lot.

It's our new steel kitchen with a blue metallic shine, straight lines, modern, efficient. I see stylish elegant women in pant suits chopping herbs to spice up their comments. Very nice. Thanks for your work, JtC
Ok, the "NEW" sign is in orange, but I would it make like the color of a "blood orange". This orange reminds me of Trump and that makes my blood boil and I see red.
I tried to display a color here but didn't know how to do it. rgb(230, 0, 0) ?

Thanks for your work dude! Heh. I had FINALLY got used
to, and had come to really like, the old multiple columns.
But don't worry. I never liked the changes when they first happened at dk but I always got used to them.
My only real beech is minor, is still the crap image uploader which will not automatically resize like Facebook, dk, Travelpod, and others do. But I don't have the money to fund a new one so, pay no attention to me lol !!!
Thanks for all you do.

I also ignore first page and go straight to recent. But the new recent posts way seems handier in that you can easily drill back once an essay goes down off the bottom.

Really nice. One thing though, I miss the 'slimmed' button to bring the whole thing back to the top. That huge round button in the right lower corner blocks a lot of screen real-estate.

Paragraph breaks in comments?
Hi JtC. The new site looks great, thank you so much for your work and dedication!
We were just talking in the open thread about how line breaks have disappeared from previous comments, now all paras run together in older comments, and it seems you have to manually add an HTML break command in order to get line breaks in a comment now.
This is easy enough to do on my computer to get to the br tool in the toolbar, as long as you remember to do it each time instead of just hitting the return key. but on my phone its a pain because the popup tool tips actually cover the buttons.
If it is possible to restore the way it worked before and breaks are added just by using the return key on the keyboard, that would be awesome. Thanks again!
Ha! Well in the preview on my computer, all these paras are run together, even with the
added in. Maybe because I also added a return to that I can see the breaks as I'm typing?
Let's see.
OK so that was a fail!
added in.
Is this your way of telling us to be more concise in our replies? just kidding...
OK, I don't have a clue
Reply to: CS in AZ
Hi CS, I fixed the automatic line break problem, I had to edit a CSS file and remove a line of code.
It works now.
Thank you so much!
For the people having issues with the font being small, it is easy to magnify it in your web browser; control+ (command+ on a mac) increases the size to whatever you like/need.

Why are there
no paragraphs in the comments? For me it's really hard to read big comments that are solid blocks with no paragraphs. I also noticed that links and things like bold or italics are in code.while I'm gripping the type size is too small. Navigation fine but I miss having the Recent Essay List in the Community featured section.I usually go right to this when I come here to see what new. Thanks JtC for your hard work. I'll adjust to the new site.
RE: c99p site upgrade update
@#0 sorry just trying the reply node whatever the heck that is. I'll give this a whirl and be back later after I give myself and the new site a chance. Testing Bold thanks again JtC
It certainly looks better
but I hate to tell you that it is still too small on smartphones. Sorry
Reply to: gjohnsit
I can tweak that later, I wanted to get this up and running first.
I did check it on a phone before I ported the changes over here from the dev site and you're right, portrait mode is too small but landscape mode is much better.

Reply to: dance you monster
Not that I have any suggestions for that -- it's just a design quirk I'm seeing.
Reply to: dance you monster
it's designed that way. I tried everything that i could think of to remove it to no avail.
You can remove it when you write your comment or add text after it.
Okay, let's try that.
Cool, that worked!
You can remove it as JtC said
Oh, I forgot to mention...
that the site's content has now been 100% indexed so the search function should work as it's supposed to now.
I know I saw a few complaints about our search function sucking, well, it was. There was a problem with some unicode characters that was published here and there in the content, the database didn't like it and the search indexer would halt and hang every time it hit one of the unicode character strings.
It took a while but after removing all of the unicode characters the content indexed 100%.
Folks...
if you don't like the "Reply To:" in the subject line you can strip it when writing your comment or write more of a subject line after it.
I need to enlarge page to 125% to read comfortably
what I read w/o enlarging previously.
Looks nice, JTC! Thank you.

Once the dust settles, I'll enlarge the text. The problem with that though is people have already compensated by enlarging with their browsers, so when I us CSS to enlarge the text it will appear enormous to them.
I did that before on another board and got tons of complaints. "It' too big now! It's too bog now!"
The problem with adjusting text size is, you can't please everyone.
How do you
I just tried the image editor and it doesn't seem to work. I'm sure you have other more pressing tinkering to do but I sure love my images. No problem but I hope it becomes functional soon. On the image editor the file browser the second box does not fully load. The bar across the top stays blank. Thanks again for your hard work and the slick new site.
Morning shaz...
I just increased the font size a little, is it better now?
Yes it is better
Thanks for all the work...
On my desktop, I magnified and it is very readable and attractive.

Seriously though, that "NEW" is huge enough and it doesn't matter what color it is (as long as it's not the same light blue as the background!). We'll see it.

Oh, I thought this was a discussion of the overall background color, not the "new" comment button, so my bad.
Still not crazy about red for that button though.

Control+ not so good a solution...
Windoze 7 and Firefox. Control+ makes everything larger, not just this very small font. This pushes many things off the edge of the screen.
Many sites have a button like Font+ and Font- that just effects the font size not just a general magnification.
Sounds like I'm quite the complainer here which is not my intent. Thanks for everything JtC

Control+ is the same function as view/zoom - and while I can scroll sideways to see the stuff that spills over the edge, that is yes, it magnifies everything, scrolling back and forth sideways ain't really convenient.

I increased the font size again...
you may have to readjust your browser settings.
Hi JtC. One last suggestion from me (for now)
Personally I was ok with the font size and it seems fine to me. I'm accustomed to using zoom in my browser to adjust sizing as needed on various sites, so it's not an issue for me at all.
However, as I have been reading comments in various posts for a little while now, I am finding the all-caps headings *very* difficult to read. The font is narrow, and in all caps, it just ends up looking like a block of blue and takes extra time and focus to decipher, even when I zoom in on it. So I would like to suggest getting rid of the all-caps as a default. Thanks again.
I'll look into it...
There'll be many tweaks as we go along. But I do agree with your assessment.

I don't know if I'm serious or not. You guys are funny too, about the colors and such. Thanks all! Keep going.
