c99p site upgrade update

Good morning folks

After a couple of weeks of tweaking, code patching, squishing bugs, and general clean up, I finally finished getting the site in tip top shape after the recent software upgrade. Getting that done allowed me to concentrate on the new site layout which you are using right now.

All functions and features are still present, although you may need to get used to where they have been moved to. Many have been moved to the "Navigation" dropdown menu in the header. It may take a while, but I guarantee you'll get used to it.

The comment section has had a major upgrade. When you now make a reply to another comment "Reply to: username" will automatically appear in the subject line. You may add additional text after the "Reply to:" if you want or you may also remove it all together.

Also take note of the parent link that is now included. You'll see it right at the beginning of the comment body. it will appear as a number when you are using the comment editor, but after you publish it will change to a link to the parent comment. Please don't remove this number when writing your comment or the parent link will be lost to all subsequent readers. If you mouse hover over the parent link in any comment you'll see a popup box that displays the parent comment. Also if you click the parent link in any comment it will take you to the parent comment, click the back button in your browser to get back to where you were before.

To the left of the comments you'll see the user names/avatars, under that you'll see that every comment is now assigned a number for easy referencing.

I also added a large gold "NEW" text in every new comment. Hopefully this will make it easier to spot the new comments.

You also should notice a definite improvement on mobile devices. Those of you that use phones and pads please give me some feedback.

Please keep in mind that I still have a lot of tweaking left to do on this interface and will be working on it in the future.

I hope you enjoy it

@PriceRip
RIP, when you edit a comment it doubles up on the "Reply to:" and the parent link. You can remove the extra ones when you edit.

@JtC

I caught that during the testing and found a way to defeat that. So, the question is will it still work.

And now the more important question is, Does this trick foulup the works?

I can easily defeat the multiple edit tagging. but I have been defeated in my quest to control formatting at the zeroth level.

Sad

          If this works, I will be happy. YES, thanks for restoring my mojo, JtC

@PriceRip

          I would like to write a simple statement: To make @PriceRip appear you type "@#1.1". but every time I type "@#1.1" it resolves to @PriceRip . The only way that seems to work is to type "@#1.1" but that is so very not right, in so many ways. I need to be able to type long strings for which spacing is an issue.

          Sigh, I am defeated.

@#1.1 produces @#1.1 which then renders as @PriceRip

          I am not defeated.

@JtC Why can't NEW be red? Hah! You asked for it. Wink

Plus the hex is #FF0000 which Trump would pronounce foo, and that rhymes with new. Whereas, orange just reminds me of fascism for some reason. LOL! I'm just kidding around.

Thank you so much JtC. Thanks for creating the space where people can talk and learn and be who they are without too much hassle. Thanks a lot.

@JtC Looking good so far JTC, The mobile friendly still needs some tweaking.

Here it is on an iPhone 6S I'm going back to the laptop.
Let me know if you want another screenshot after adjustments.
In addition the curser goes off the right side of the screen when replying so you can't see what you are typing.
Also picture upload dialogues are huge so you have great difficulty doing that.
It still has 3 failed areas on the Google mobile friendly test.

Ok, the "NEW" sign is in orange, but I would it make like the color of a "blood orange". This orange reminds me of Trump and that makes my blood boil and I see red.

I tried to display a color here but didn't know how to do it. rgb(230, 0, 0) ?

Alex Ocana's picture

@divineorder Yes, it takes me hours to load and layout my usually heavily visual essays. The multi-step process is annoying and the back and forth from upload to send to editor to clicking C, then hitting the camera icon, back to browse followed by edit to save (visualize) to edit to save gives me an editor's headache. To the point that I prefer to post on facebook first. I suppose another way to save time would be to use Presentations software to lay out the graphics, captions and test then just load the essay as images.

I also ignore first page and go straight to recent. But the new recent posts way seems handier in that you can easily drill back once an essay goes down off the bottom.

Hi JtC. The new site looks great, thank you so much for your work and dedication!

We were just talking in the open thread about how line breaks have disappeared from previous comments, now all paras run together in older comments, and it seems you have to manually add an HTML break command in order to get line breaks in a comment now.

This is easy enough to do on my computer to get to the br tool in the toolbar, as long as you remember to do it each time instead of just hitting the return key. but on my phone its a pain because the popup tool tips actually cover the buttons.

If it is possible to restore the way it worked before and breaks are added just by using the return key on the keyboard, that would be awesome. Thanks again!

Ha! Well in the preview on my computer, all these paras are run together, even with the
added in. Maybe because I also added a return to that I can see the breaks as I'm typing?
Let's see.

For the people having issues with the font being small, it is easy to magnify it in your web browser; control+ (command+ on a mac) increases the size to whatever you like/need.

no paragraphs in the comments? For me it's really hard to read big comments that are solid blocks with no paragraphs. I also noticed that links and things like bold or italics are in code.while I'm gripping the type size is too small. that the site's content has now been 100% indexed so the search function should work as it's supposed to now.

I know I saw a few complaints about our search function sucking, well, it was. There was a problem with some unicode characters that was published here and there in the content, the database didn't like it and the search indexer would halt and hang every time it hit one of the unicode character strings.

It took a while but after removing all of the unicode characters the content indexed 100%.

Once the dust settles, I'll enlarge the text. The problem with that though is people have already compensated by enlarging with their browsers, so when I us CSS to enlarge the text it will appear enormous to them.

I did that before on another board and got tons of complaints. "It' too big now! It's too bog now!"

The problem with adjusting text size is, you can't please everyone.

@JtC

Personally I was ok with the font size and it seems fine to me. I'm accustomed to using zoom in my browser to adjust sizing as needed on various sites, so it's not an issue for me at all.

However, as I have been reading comments in various posts for a little while now, I am finding the all-caps headings *very* difficult to read. The font is narrow, and in all caps, it just ends up looking like a block of blue and takes extra time and focus to decipher, even when I zoom in on it. So I would like to suggest getting rid of the all-caps as a default. Thanks again.
