Disability Caucus Open Thread 11/14/2016: Work From Home Suggestions

As much as I talk about working from home, I never seem to go through with it. I admit I was hoping to find an 'adult' job for an 'adult' wage, but let's face facts: Those have gone the way of the dodo.
Back before Daily Kos became the Orange Shitcan, people used to suggest to me that I take up technical writing. Other things I tried looking into were data entry or medical billing. I applied to many 'work from home' jobs over the six months I was forced to 'work for food' and not a single employer replied.
I also did a little digitizing with photos and vhs tapes but could never get much business.
So what does one do to work from home? I would certainly welcome suggestions.

How good are you at computer stuff?
The horrible ex worked from home doing online tech support and remote virus removal for support.com and he never met anyone with the company in actual meatspace, all done over the phone and via computer. There are also virtual call center jobs--call centers are spendy AF to build and maintain, it's getting way cheaper to have your agents work from home and remote monitor them for QA purposes.

I was just at a meeting for self-advocates in Philadelphia with a blind friend, yesterday.
I've done medical transcription and am now doing academic
editing. I don't recommend either one. They both pay below minimum wage, MT significantly below with the advent of voice "recognition".

For me to get a possibly decent job a daily 3 hour commute would be required. Not worth it. I have a husband and 2 teenage kids. If I was gone 11 hours a day, I would have hire all of the stuff I do at home.
So I sew and cook from scratch and clean and grow food and barter and make things.
In the future I anticipate that we will have less income so I hope we can continue to evolve.
I looked into all of those work from home on computer things too. I didn't find anything personally viable.
Because of the climate crisis, IMO, ultimately most of us will be forced back a hundred years.
I like it though. Admittedly, we are not forced to be pure yet. I can still go to the grocery store. I don't sew all our clothes.
Maybe there is something similar that suits you? It's not that you make things to sell for money. You make things you need.

I'm a freelancer with Upwork.com. It's free to join and you can bid on various assignments. I focus on marketing of technology but have also done technical writing, website content writing and other tasks. I had to start low at $30 an hour, but I've been able to build my rate up to $67.50 an hour after a year and a half.

Maybe you can daycare and board dogs? I've had a pet sitting biz for 18 years (!) now and I'm always busy. I have 6 Independent Contractors who work for me. Maybe you can contact a successful pet sitter in your area and ask to help with the doggy care in home? They may have lots of work for you.
Another idea is Air B & B, can you offer a room for humans? Are you near anything people are interested in staying nearby? This is something I'm thinking of doing in the future, for my retirement! Retirement? What retirement....
I know a pet sitter who has now transformed her biz into making cat toys (biggest seller) and dog beds and all sorts of pet related products, she now makes as much as the pet sitting biz does in her online stores at ebay and etsy and amazon.
