To anyone who thinks the DNC and Dem establishment will ever learn, take a look:
There has been a great deal of discussion about the Democratic Party here at c99% this week. Rebuild it? Burn it down? Take it over from the bottom up? Go Green?
[Speaking of "Dems", when I "found" dKos about a month after the 2004 reelection of the Smirking Chimp I considered myself a Democrat and because I'm from West "by God" Virginia, I quickly thought, just use "Hillbilly Dem" as a username. I guess I'm stuck with it, so forgive me. Still a proud hillbilly, the Dem part?...oofa. ]
Back to business. So Donna Brazile was interviewed after the Hillary Clinton trainwreck. Rather than admit to the shit job that she, Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the rest of the Hee Haw gang did in giving us Donald Trump, she says this:
She [Brazile] instead blamed foreign hackers who obtained access to John Podesta’s emails, which WikiLeaks published, outing Brazile for feeding the Clinton campaign debate questions prior to her Democratic primary debates with Bernie Sanders.
“When I said what I said, I said it and I’m not going back on it,” Brazile said. “If I had to do it all over again, I would know a hell of a lot more about cybersecurity. I would know a hell of a lot more about foreign intervention in our electoral process.”
Incredible. She says she'd have been better about cybersecurity? How about "I would never have leaked debate questions to Hillary in advance of the debates. Students get expelled from college for cheating on tests, people lose their jobs for less. That was wrong and I'm sorry."? No, not in the current DNC mentality. It's "we should never have gotten caught" instead of "we should never have done it".
Here's the link: http://usuncut.com/politics/dnc-mutiny-staffers-explode-donna-brazile/ (Tip of the hat to OPOL, whose FB post brought me to the article.)
We now have in print, what this board has known for months, the Dem leadership will never learn. This anecdote doesn't speak to the DNC's incompetence in handling the election (that's a 'whole 'nother story), but rather to its total isolation from reality and responsibility. If anyone still thinks that rebuilding the Dem party can be done, it had better start with a very, very big broom.

I, for one, will never return to the embrace of the democratic party.
Regardless of the path in life I chose, I realize it's always forward, never straight.
Embrace? Try "chokehold."

sometimes the practical course of action would be either to walk away and let it collapse on its own or to tear it down and rebuild, asuming it has a sound foundation. In the case of today's Democratic Party the foundation has already begun to crumble. Walk away and build somewhere else would be my advice.

Donna has been well trained by Hillary
The Clinton's mantra has always been 'I'm not guilty if you can't prove it' and 'It's not a lie if I don't get caught'.
There are a lot of things I don't know much about in this world BUT I do know that when you are bad at lying, you shouldn't lie to the nation over the national airwaves. Maybe people won't be able to prove you are lying but they will know you are lying.
That 'knowing' brought us President The Donald.
That and my cat Tay of course. You see, Tay has been dead for 20 years or so and well, she didn't vote for Hillary.

I just hope that the leadership battle leaves his "reputation" in tatters and he fails to become Leader.
The Trump governance comments are interesting
If he indeed abandons his signature campaign promises and governs as a typical Republican, he will be a single term President. Unless the democrats run Hillary again. Warren or Sanders could blow him away if he reneges on trade.

Leadership? It's deeper than that. Rank-and-file dems

Right now, the main drivers
Right now, the main drivers of the progressive side are pressing and backing Keith Ellison for DNC Chair. All I can say is yes.
And there was a person at the meeting with Brazile who questioned her (and others) ability to take the Dems where they need to go. He pointed out the DNC had presented a flawed candidate, shut off all dissension because it was "her turn", and failed to support down ballot candidates. So there is some turmoil going on.

Agreed.
There are signs of hope if we are willing to look for them. Writing off the Democratic party means totally giving up any power structure. I know the media and the Clintonista democrats are screaming 'Progressives Lost the Election'. That is what they do and what they will continue to do. But the main 'Democrat' who is survived this IS Bernie. I love you Hillbilly Dem. But we have to decide. Are we going to try to pin our hopes on a party that got less than 1% of the vote? Or can we take this opportunity to maybe fight, at least one more time, to bring back the New Deal?
Democrats, we tried to warn you. How is that guilt and shame working out?
The Greens are a black hole
We need a new third party. All successful third parties have been founded by breakaway experienced politicians, not amateurs. I like the Green goals and wish them well, but we need a schism in the Democratic Party with experienced "name" politicians running it.
I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
Who is that successful politician?
I don't see anybody in sight. Except for Bernie - and he is sticking with the Democratic Party. I think we are all missing out on a salient point here - Bernie has emerged from this fiasco with MORE power. I, personally, am going to give him a chance. We can forgive him for falling in line for Hillary because he saw no other path to defeat Trump, or we can throw him out and start all over. Without Bernie and other progressive Democrats - we have NO power.
Democrats, we tried to warn you. How is that guilt and shame working out?
Tulsi Gabbard
She seems amazing. Integrity. Progressive. Military. Already an experienced national politician. Empathetic.
I've seen a couple comments about her that she's not as progressive as she seems, but I've done a bit of digging and found nothing I dislike about her policy positions. Maybe I'm missing something--and I'd be interested to know if I am.
Let's face it. Bernie will be pretty old in 4 years (80?). Tulsi would appeal to millennials. Progressives. Women. Minorities. Men.
She would be a first female president of the United States who would really deserve the position, to my mind.
She is also a Democrat.
Which leads me to my point about third parties.
Democrats, we tried to warn you. How is that guilt and shame working out?
You're right, of course, this is the system we have.
To ignore the absolute power that the 2 major political parties possess is a big mistake. I've always said that the way to win elections is not necessarily through big money and big advertising campaigns. A solid candidate with a resonating message can get it done, too. But unless you are in a small race where wearing out shoe leather can still prevail, it's true that you still need $$$. Bernie was a blip on the screen. Then his message caught fire, then came the contributions. Without the contributions, he's Jill Stein (for whom I voted, btw).
But to answer your question, the Democratic party is worth trying to rebuild, because The New Deal is worth trying to resuscitate. But if the Dems are going to get even a second look from me and people like me, they'll have to prove to me that it's going to be the party of FDR and JFK once more. How? Off the top of my head, they'll have to do all of this and much more:
1. Name an incorruptible and unapologetic liberal as Chair. I don't mean a neoliberal or liberal on some issues. We need the Real McCoy. Anybody who supported Hillary Clinton is disqualified. If a Hillary backer is named Chair of the DNC, it's over before it starts. At least for me. If someone who even "reluctantly" supported Her Heinous is named Chair, it tells me that there will be no change. Even Bernie. I still admire the man, but he can't be Chair in my scenario.
2. Bring back Howard Dean's 50 state strategy. "Thanks for abandoning it, Obama." When BHO took office in 2009, the Repubs had both houses in 14 states, Democrats had 27, 8 were split and Nebraska is unicameral. Eight years later? The Repubs have both houses in 30 states, the Dems have a mere 12, 7 split, plus Neb. Harry Truman said that given a choice between a real Republican and a Democrat trying to act like a Republican, the people will vote for the Republican. Hat tip to gjohnsit...http://caucus99percent.com/content/democrats-are-so-deeply-denial-they-m...
3. Go after the union members. Union leadership is as fat and happy as the DNC and DLC. In the Dem primaries, Bernie got union endorsements when the rank and file voted on it. When it was decided by only the union officials? Hillary got the endorsements. Bypass the leadership. Reach out to the members. (The catch is, DNC, that you have to deliver. Both Bernie and PBO promised to walk the picket lines. Only one delivered.)
4. They've got to break away from Big Money. Kicking any addiction is a bitch. Alcohol. Drugs. Money, too. And getting away from it for a month ain't showing me squat. That's a long term "one day at a time" process. But the DNC has to start somewhere. Bernie proved it can be done. But without stellar candidates with a reverberating message, like Bernie, it won't happen. The quickest way to prove to the 99% that you are not the concubine of the 1% is to get out of bed with the 1%.
There are plenty more, but those are the types of things that they'll have to show this hayseed before I'll believe them. I'm not willing to say I will never come back to the Dems, but it'll take changes like these and more, before I'll try to kick the Charlie Brown football again. I hope that answers the question, RichM.

I agree with all of your points...
Except I don't think number 1 is practical. Can you even name someone who has even an outside chance to chair the DNC that did not endorse Hilary? I can't. Seems like a recipe for failure. Thanks for responding.
Democrats, we tried to warn you. How is that guilt and shame working out?
The head of the party doesn't have to be a career politician.
Nor must it be an elected official. Appointing someone who has never been beholden to the Clinton Machine is paramount. If that means appointing Thomas Frank, I'm all for it. I disagree that it's a recipe for failure. We need a new sheriff in town, RichM. If Thomas Frank would take the Chairmanship, he could certainly be my Eliot Ness.
"Just call me Hillbilly Dem(exit)."
-H/T to Wavey Davey
Sorry...
(I seem to be saying that a lot today) What I meant was - your number 1 seemed like a very high bar and one that would disqualify you from even giving the party a chance. The other points are valid - but it is going to be very hard to find somebody who didn't at least endorse Clinton. That is what I meant to say. I didn't mean that choosing someone like Thomas Frank would be a disaster.
Democrats, we tried to warn you. How is that guilt and shame working out?
No apology necessary.
One of the things I like most about this site (unlike TOP) is that spirited discussion is not seen as insulting. It's all good, brother.
"Just call me Hillbilly Dem(exit)."

You must be kidding.
"At least one more time?"
And when that fails, as every effort we've made since I was born in 1968 fails? You, or, rather, we, because I was there trying too, have lost every goddamned time and have never succeeded in pushing the Democratic party left in my lifetime. Not even when our organizing resulted in the wins of 06 and 08. We all thought the Dems would take that opportunity to move the party leftward. Instead, Obama engineered an insurance bailout and started talking about cutting Social Security.
Look, those who want to try to convince the American electorate, that just voted for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton, that the Democrats really will be progressive this time, no really, they really will help you this time, this time they really care, no, I mean it, have their work cut out for them and had better get to it. Maybe y'all will be lucky and the horrors the Republicans inflict over the next two years will drive people back to the Democrats. Or maybe the voter turnout will continue to decline, as it did in both 2012 and 2016, because too many people understand that the Democrats are lying when they say they care.

Trump will be reelected in 2020
If he gets us out of the Oil Wars, leaves SS & Medicare alone, and somehow some jobs return to the USA. No matter what else he does. Many voted for Hillary based on "he's a fascist" "he's Hitler" "he'll destroy the country". When they see him as just another Republican and actually was less of a threat than Hillary, he will be win a landslide. They can ban abortion, institute concealed carry everywhere, require photo ID, ban Muslim immigration and still win big if he puts bread on the table in the states he won. Progressives will scream but the masses will cheer. The 1% will be happy if the stock market is up and their taxes are down.
I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
I basically agree w/ everything you said, except
"They can ban abortion."
Agree w/ abortion or not, to make it illegal is to state-sanction control of half of the electorate's bodies-- and that is fascism in the most overt way. You will see an uprising like you haven't seen in your lifetime.
I remember when it was crime in Illinois and not a dead letter
With a liberal Democratic Governor too. Without SCOTUS and Roe v Wade, I doubt if abortion would be legal in more than a handful of states. Not that I don't agree with leaving abortion alone as a most personal choice, but that's how I read the population.

I think they hope to corrupt him just as former outsider
Howard Dean was corrupted after serving as head of the DNC. Just my opinion.
"The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now do you begin to understand me?" ~Orwell, "1984"
I think many liberals misperceived Dean in 2004.
He is as elite as it gets. Daddy was a broker. Howard raised on Park Avenue and in East Hampton. He was center right on everything but health care, even gay rights. I don't know why he was assumed to be a liberal. I don't think he ever was. Also, just my opinion.
Yes, but do TPTB at the DNC know that? They have
proven to be remarkably delusional.

I would bet the deed to my home that they know and that they are
not delusional. That they want very different things than we do--and most often get what they want--is not, to me, a sign that they are the ones who are delusional.
I agree with all but gay rights.

Loved me some 'People Powered Howard' and campaigned for him heavily in 2004. But he is to the right on a lot of things and he is yesterday's news. We need fresh faces and new ideas.

That would be a Millennial

And for those who think it was a GOTV problem...
There was no VtGO!!! People like me voted GREEN and many who stayed home did so because they simply could not vote for either major party candidate and for whatever reason did not want to vote for one of the other candidates. Yep!
Yeah...
Of course she isn't going to change. But she is yesterday's news. Yeah, there a 'clingers' who listen to her. But I am seeing something different. Who is leading the Democratic Party right now? Really, it's Bernie. He is the one in the spotlight. He is the one talking about Keith Ellison becoming the next DNC chair. I don't expect Donna, or any of the Clintonistas to learn any lessons. But they may already be yesterday's news.
Guys - we can talk about the duapoly all we want. But that is the government we have. If we want to bring down the duapoly, then we have to bring down the way we are governed. We are talking about tearing up the Constitution. Seriously. I know we are all hurting and I know we can righteously claim we were right. Big deal. The questions - what are we willing to do and what can we do.
Democrats, we tried to warn you. How is that guilt and shame working out?
Yes, we do. That's why nobody wants to actually do anything
because the only options left are revolutionary.
Or we could ignore it all with a bottle of tequila on the beach until the money runs out or the duopoly blows up the world.
Tearing up the Constitution? Too late. I couldn't tear it up if I tried; the Bushes did that.
We have a wealthy class that is above the law. We have parties that represent only that wealthy class. The wealthy apparently like war, pollution, and poverty for everybody but themselves. Prisons, torture, and assassination are also popular.
After the way the left was just treated in this campaign, after the assumptions of the Democratic party's power structure have been revealed in those emails, the whole "reform the system from within" thing is nothing but self-delusion. You will get nowhere, like we've gotten nowhere every time we've tried to change them for the better since McGovern.
I'd rather binge-watch Netflix with a bottle at my side for the rest of my natural life than waste any more time or energy on that vampiric organization.
Didn't Bill Clinton's mentor at college advocate for a system where both parties support the same policies and hand off power to each other in turn?

Just like to point out that
Just like to point out that nobody can 'legally' tear up your Constitution - guaranteeing citizen rights and establishing the basis of law and government equally to all and in the public interest - which has simply not ever been enforced.
That concept, The Great Experiment of Democracy, embodies the American Dream, not get-rich-quick-and-the-devil-take-the-hindmost, as it's been presented by those leaving boot-prints all over it in their contravention of the principles in self-serving betrayals.
Such public officials are in continued and egregious violation of the Constitution they've sworn to uphold, as so very many have been and the more far-seeing of America's Founders indicated that the people would have to act to ensure their rights were respected by those in public office - not intended to hold power over the people, but to serve their interests and protect their rights, well-being and democracy - and not become convinced, as such as these seek to, through phrasing/propaganda, that anyone has a 'right' to betray their oath, people and country in ignoring/tearing up the Constitution they must serve the principles of in order to hold office in the first place.
This is no different than their claiming precedent for getting away with continual crimes such as literal murder, armed robbery (in the invasion of other countries,) and routine betrayal of the public trust (on the grounds that others doing so have not been charged, further emboldening each perpetrator expanding upon this afterward,) in order to serve destructive self-interests to the public cost and that this somehow makes it all A-OK, especially while locking up insanely huge segments of the general population for purposes of suppression and industry/political enabler profit.
Law has become a game played by lawyers, rather than a progression toward justice, and these legal tricks are being used against the population by those they pay to guard and serve their interests.
Lest we forget, democratic government is not the master or owner of the public and country but the servant of the public interest, one forming the united power of the people against those predators who would do what those forming government do now.

thank you HillBillyDem
We shouldn't worry about the DNC anymore. It's dead. At least to me. They stole my right to vote during the Primary and then demanded I vote with my vagina because it's "her turn".
I think I should up at DKos the same time you did. They were anti-war at the time... I left in March. Went back once to see them trying to eat AspieCorner's diary and I just never went back.
Just like I won't go back to the Democrats. They are a huge fail. So much failure they lost to Trump. Even though we warned them that would happen.
We needed the election to be about the people and the planet and instead we got two steaming piles of turds on a curb.
It's time to get to work and create a country we want. Why wait for an election? Let's just organize and build it back up.
I want election reform. I want to see communities gather around creating incredible education opportunities. Build classrooms, universities, bring back vocational training schools. Those would build jobs, create better Americans not through hate but hardwork and education.
I'm not out riotting in Portland either, those fools should have been angry about the election corruption and how the Dems didn't heed our warning that Hillary was a loser. She lost to Trump. We knew it was going to happen. The riotters should be out protesting the damn DNC. Misplaced anger.
Yeah, I'm disgusted and embarrassed that Trump will be President. But I am more terrified of Hillary and the DNC's corruption and warmongering.
Fuck the Democrats, they own all of this. Maybe next rigged election they won't go with the "Shut the fuck up and just vote for who we demand you to".
"Love One Another" ~ George Harrison
Misplaced anger indeed!
Truly, the protesters don't get it. I notice the protests are primarily in Democratic-governed areas. Perhaps the protesters will start to get a clue when their dear Democratic government leaders order the fire hoses to be turned on them.
Or maybe not ... maybe they'll just get wet.
Weren't we told that the Right would be rioting when Trump lost.
It was all screaming "Hitler! Fascist!". Now that Democrats are rioting and setting fires, Progressives are pretty quiet about it.
I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
If these protesters all seem
If these protesters all seem to be Hillary supporters waving Hillary signs, and the police seemingly have no problem with them - how many millions are/were left in Hill's various SuperPacs/DNC coffers, etc., with which her campaign coordinated, after Big Spending On Paid Internet Trolls, ballot-shredding trucks, Dem Convention 'seat-fillers' paid evidently also to drown out protest at the DNC Selection, etc? Just asking...

Look at Hillary and Bill. Left the white house broke from legal fees supposedly. By only seven years later, they had raked in income of about $110 million (for all seven years).* And we think we're going to get politicians to give up all that with something like an email or an online petition? They must roll on the floor laughing whenever they get another online petition.

seven years, not one. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/05/us/politics/05clintons.html
Sorry for my error. I took too large a risk going from memory about numbers I heard eight years ago. I was wrong. I hate posting disinformation. Thanks for catching. I have corrected my prior post and given you credit.
The last mess she got into, her response was
that there was a lesson to be learned, namely, "Pick up the phone." Again, do the same thing, just don't get caught.
Since she is not a samuri, she should have at least resigned in acknowledgement she was corrupt. If she didn't, they should have fired her. That Brazile is still in the DNC speaks volumes about both Brazile and the DNC.
Then they wonder why Millennial don't trust them--why no one trusts them.
At this point, the DNC really is...
...to use a real estate phrase, nothing but a teardown. It needs to be rebuilt entirely anew. Anything less than that is bullshit. The basic bellwether here is to see how much support Howard Dean gets coming out of the gate. If he's really in contention (with voiced support from Party leaders) for the DNC chair position over the next few weeks/months, THE PARTY'S OVER.
Excellent, concise post! Thank you!

I'd also like to see Tulsi Gabbard with a very high profile...
...role in any "reinvented" Democratic Party. (I know she's not even close to perfect, but DAYUM, her work on Bernie's campaign was truly outstanding. I'm a big fan.)

YES! I think she's someone we should watch and promote
She had the courage of her convictions to resign when she saw how dirty the DNC was/is.

A co-worker said election night Pelosi said similar
Only, he said that Pelosi claimed Trump worked with the Russians to do it. Or something like that. I have not told him that this Jill fan actually voted for Trump. NPR said Hills almost took Texas, and helping prevent her from taking our electoral votes is why I did it. He said she didn't almost take Texas. Don't know who's right, but this white woman pissed off her kids and voted the lesser evil and was immediately guilty for betraying Jill.
Texas wasn't even close
NPR is quite wrong.
Trump took Texas by over ten points. Even if Clinton had the votes given to the third parties, she would have lost by over 6 points.
I don't know which year to use as a fair comparison.
2008 and 2012 I don't know if Obama's race would have been more of a factor in a former Jim Crow state than it was in other states. 2000 and 2004 a former Texas Governor, popular in Texas, I guess, was running. 1992 and 1996, Texas billionaire Perot was in the mix, along with adopted Texas George H. W. Bush. Before that, the phenom of St. Ronnie. And before that is probably not at all comparable because of changing demographics.
OPOL, eh?
Have you a link to OPOL's face book page (I'm not a face booker, but I can view many of the pages)? thanks!

Thanks for trying.
It's likely because I'm not a face book member. If you are in touch with OPOL and could persuade him to publish here at c99p, that would be totally kick-ass.

What’s sad is, the *German* Left totally drank identity Kool-aid
Here’s a German editorial from the Tageszeitung, a Left-alternative-Green-leaning daily newspaper, blaming it all on the racism of women not-of-color:
Trust No White Bitch
Who betrayed us? White women who voted for Trump! Rather than supporting victims of discrimination, they are making themselves accomplices of “rape culture”
Really? “Trust No White Bitch” as the headline? Anti-white attitudes in the German left-leaning press just reinforce right-wing populists’ claims that they, the extreme Right, are the last bastion defending ethnic northern European peoples against an Other that gleefully anticipates their destruction.
