Sorry about the down time today folks--UPDATED

I paid the hosting fees today and for security reasons had our site upgraded to a dedicated IP address and the new address had to make it's way through DNS before it resolved correctly. I had no idea we would be down during this change as I wasn't told about it in advance, so I wasn't able to warn everyone about it. I'm just glad it's resolved and we're back to normal.

We may also be adding a SSL certificate in the near future, to encrypt our traffic and to make our logins much more secure.

Sorry about any confusion or angst.

UPDATE: Folks, I'm having as much trouble as you are. Bluehost support said it will take a while before the changes work themselves through the WWW's DNS. It's gotten better, earlier today when they changed to the dedicated IP number I couldn't log in at all. Give it time, it will improve. Again, sorry for the problems, if they had warned me that this was going to happen I would have done it late at night when things are slow.

Now, I'm going to see if this even posts!!

Freaked me right out earlier. I am broke right now so haven't donated and I figured oh no's. You had enough for a bottle of wine but not enough to keep your favorite site on line, I thought guiltily. I then blamed the deadbeat client who all though he pays and makes up a third of our income messes up the cash flow by not paying until after his clients pay him. As his studies are mainly for CA bureaucratic agencies municipalities school districts etc. it freakin takes forever. So by the middle of this month Dec. I can chip in some money to keep this place humming along. Thanks again for the great site. I think it's needed more then ever as I smell mutiny on the winds blowing from in dkos.

when the site came back up and I clicked "My Account" I got Robyn's. I logged out, logged back in and everything was good. So...do we have a new name for the place?

Also, if we get a new name will we need to re-register? And will "caucus99percent.com" take us to the new place? Obviously I don't how this sort of thing works.

It looks as if two versions of everything is coming up, dependent on where you click and log in. One version gives the status "before" in which the "Sorry about the down time today folks" diary comes up and the "UPDATED" version with all the comments posted after the "before" status don't show up.

Well, if we are all invisible to ourselves that must mean deep thingies. I think it's the "cloud" status.

there's nothing I can do about it, it's out of my hands. If it doesn't get better soon I'll call Bluehost again, I've already wasted much of today on the phone with them. Again, I wish they would have warned me that this would happen.

Most noticeable thing for me is, my upvotes aren't “taking”

I upvote a bunch of comments, and they all say “[vote count increased by 1] users have voted, including you.”

But when the page refreshes, the vote count is back to where it was, and the “including you“ is gone.

May be that might help understanding what's going on?

It's 11:52 am EST Dec. 5th. I booted my computer and logged in. Which brought me into JtC account. I posted a comment with the title: "heh, JtC, I logged in and I am YOU!". That comment didn't show up on the left hand side under "Recent comments".

Then I clicked on "mimi" under the "There are currently x users online". It brought me to my account already logged in. Now I could see my comment "heh, HtC, I logged in and I am YOU!

Now the question is, why if I log in after rebooting my computer I end up in JTC's account?

I will now watch if this comment shows up under Recent Comments, as right now I am in my mimi account. I could get into my own account only by clicking my user name on the left hand side, where it appears under the currently users online.

ok, once I had posted the comment above this one,

it didn't appear under Recent Comments and I got logged out and back into JtC's account.
I had to look to somewhere on the left hand side where I could click on my own name mimi. As I didn't show up as logged in I had to find an old comment of mine on the left hand side, which said "By: mimi". So I clicked on my name mimi there and it brought be back to my account and I could see the comment I just posted.

Now I do the same thing again, post this comment and see, if I again get logged out of my account and back into JtC's account, which means I can't see this comment as posted under recent comments.

This is better than Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors". Wish me luck. I want to be me. Let's go and click the save button to post this comment...

ok, here is what happens, once I posted the comment above

I get logged out of my account and back to someone else's. I have then to look for anything on the left hand side with 'mimi" in it, or go back a page to get back into my account.

So, basically, I guess the problem is that once you post you get logged out of your own account back into someone else's and you have to find a way to go back into your own.
How? I don't know just find something on the left hand side with your name and click on it or go a page back.

Update...

Folks, I'm about ready to tear my hair out, I've been on the phone with tech for, this the second day now. I've talked to 7 or 8 so-called technicians and I keep getting the same runaround. As soon as they installed the Dedicated IP yesterday the problems started, I had a tech log into our site this morning and he said he couldn't replicate the problem so, voila!, he said there was no problem! They keep telling me that the new IP change has to propagate through DNS, one tech says it will take anywhere from minutes to 6 hours, another tech tells me 4 hours, another tech tells me 24 hours and this morning a tech told be up to 48 hours. Jeebus H. Christ!

I tell them that things went haywire when the Dedicated IP was installed, I had one tech tell me last night that there is no correlation that the site messed up the exact time that the Ded. IP was installed, I mean pass the buck or what. So I tell them that I want the Ded. IP uninstalled and taken back to the state it was before, well, only the Cancellation Dept. can do that and they are only there on normal business hours, which wont be until Monday goddamn morning!

I should never have listened to the accounts guy's recommendation to install a Ded. IP, it really is a good idea to do that, but if I would have been told this was going to happen I would have said "Hell no"!

Anyway, things do slowly seem to be getting better, so let's hope that the tech that said up to 48 hours was right. Anyway if it doesn't I can't reverse anything until Monday. Sorry about all of this, it's out of my hands.

Folks, I hope you have more patience than I do because my last nerve has been frayed.

the new IP probagating through DNS wouldn't cause the problem the site has. Even back in 1995 it didn't take more than a day.

I didn't even know that one can still have a dedicated IP. I remember that someone told me you don't those these days anymore.

I am not in the mood to get to understand it all, but for those who want to may be this link makes it comprehensible.
What's the difference between a dedicated server and a dedicated IP address?

All I remember I had both a dedicated server and a dedicated IP address in 1995, used open source software and had a Perl coding whizard administrating the server remotely. I closed down my server and website, when I realized that I would never be able with my online bookstore to compete against Amazon by the end of 1996. It was then I decided to never learn coding myself and to poop on the technology.

JtC, just for your own sanity, I hope the guys find out why people are logged out to your account at a status and time of around some time yesterday. Don't worry, it's the usual fun one has with being a sysadmin. All will be good... is what my colleagues in our TV studio said, when everything til a minute before broadcasting was not at all functioning. You gotta have nerves... Take it easy and don't let the digits let you go nuts.

Jtc, actually I believe we never get logged out ...

when I log out and then (with a screen telling me to login again) just click on Community Content (without having logged in again) I am back as being logged in to my account.

That would mean, we never get really logged out.

If I would login from the screen that tells me to log in, I end up being logged in as you. If I don't login and just click somewhere on any link on the top, I am automatically logged in as me. That shouldn't be the case, as it would mean I can't log myself out. That's probably why, if I were to login again, I can't log in to my account (and instead end up in yours), because I was still logged in and all my efforts to log myself out didn't work.

This is going to be okay.

It is possible that newly generated pages will work better and that some of the issues are caused by legacy coding embedded at older data entry points. So, as we move ahead in time, the dynamic bugs will be fewer and easier to see.
