CC HQ Full Screen Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump gear up for first debate

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump will meet Monday night for their first debate in a virtual dead heat in the race for the White House, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, with the Democratic nominee’s August advantage erased after recent difficulties and the GOP nominee still facing doubts about his qualifications and temperament.

Likely voters split 46 percent for Clinton and 44 percent for Trump, with Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson at 5 percent and Green Party nominee Jill Stein at 1 percent. Among registered voters, Clinton and Trump are tied at 41 percent, with Johnson at 7 percent and Stein at 2 percent.

In a two-way matchup between the major-party nominees, Clinton tops Trump by 49 percent to 47 percent among likely voters, and the two are tied at 46 percent among all registered voters. Clinton’s two-point edge among likely voters, in both the four-way and two-way ballot tests, is within the survey’s 4.5 percentage-point margin of sampling error.

*

Some other national polls currently show Clinton with a slightly larger lead, but on balance, the pre-debate survey averages show the margin in the race in low single digits. The tightened race is a reminder of how much will be at stake Monday night at Hofstra University when the two meet at 9 p.m. before what could be one of the largest television audiences ever for a presidential debate.

So, the coronation is not coming off as planned, huh? How amazing that the 'Democratic' Party just had to go with the one person that couldn't beat Donald Trump. I'm pretty sure (afraid?) she will in the end BUT anyone else would be walking away with this.

If they did, they'd be expected to deliver on Clinton's new found progressivism and the owners will not tolerate that.

It's looking like that "sure thing" democratic majority in the senate isn't going to happen because of the lousy candidates (i.e. Corporate dems) he picked.

Just one example: in Florida, Patrick Murphy is trailing "I don't like to show up for work" Rubio by 9 points.

it, I saw on their email today. Those two are among the sharpest and brightest (and best investigative journalists, who are unabashedly radical progressives) we've ever had.

Was thinking of TYT too, but Cenk seems to have bought into the propaganda. Ana, John and Jimmy Dore would make the difference for me. But if it's the two Clinton suckers, Manckiweiz and the other bearded guy, I'm not into it. Could be interesting watching their interactions, which were so good during the Dem Primary.

Then again, the thought of watching them literally sickens me.

Wrote this to that full of himself asshole BBB months ago:

Clinton vs. Trump will be the political equivalent of Dancing With The Stars meets Survivor celebrity spectacle, with the two well-known figures enmeshed in a fight to the death of trying to out-tough talk each other into the White House (caveat: I’ve never seen more than a minute of these shows and may be mixing them up).

By the end of October 2016 Hillary will be promising major battalions of Army, Air Force and Marines to be lined up throughout the Mexican border, simultaneous bombing campaigns on four different continents, stripping away all welfare programs to make way for austerity, promising a return to her husband’s Three Strikes policy in order to appease fear-laden white voters with tough-on-crime/law and order promises and of course, more cabinet positions for the savvy Economic Terrorists who have cut $30 million worth of checks to the family.

The possibilities for ugliness, venality, crassness, dystopia and mind-numbing pandering in that scenario are endless.

At least they had a good time together at Trump’s daughter’s wedding though. And there’s sure to be lots of American flags every time she’s on stage. So you should feel more assured than having had to suffer yesterday through Bernie’s grumpiness at Georgetown where he dared not to be swimming in red, white and blue, forced to explain over and over how the system has been hijacked by wealthy interests.

The tactic of stampeding voters toward the corporate candidate with a 'greater evil' presented as a terrible threat has failed and now panic sets in. But the Repubs can always trade out Trump for previously-failed other-corporate-favourites Bush 3 or Rubio at the last minute, same with the Dems, as they've long been threatening.

Of course, so many people will then be rioting in the streets over their doing that that nobody will be watching the media distraction circus not covering it...

We could all survive this if they'd let Bernie have the nomination he won, but greed overcomes self-preservation in those promised the world as their factory floor. While life and oxygen on it lasts, anyway.

It's the old polluting industry/corporate tactic of accusing others of what they do themselves. Hillary sold 20% of America's already insufficient-for-power-plant strategic resources of uranium to Russia, so somebody else is a Russian spy or something; Hillary has promised a 'limited' nuclear war crime against at least China, Russia and Iran to various donors, for the first two of which Obama has already begun to set up, and therefore 'the greater evil' wants nuclear war with Russia. A transparent campaign, indeed...

He makes some really interesting arguments for that,

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-09-25/dilbert-creator-scott-adams-exp...

especially that Trump is using a "pace and lead" tactic. I hadn't heard of that, but it does make some sense. Adam's emphasis on persuasion seems important, too. I don't agree with a lot if Trump's original positions, but they do seem to moderate after the initial blow-up, and he has managed incredible things in this campaign. There was a mention on Naked Capitalism some time back about the structure of Trump's speeches, too, saying that they aren't just rambling when you look closely, but have a fairly sophisticated structure. Interesting.

Not Henry Kissinger's picture

from his latest on what Trump needs to do to win:

“Beat the point spread” is a good description of what Donald Trump has to do in Monday night’s debate.

With only a year in national politics, he does not have to show a mastery of foreign and domestic policy details. Rather, he has to do what John F. Kennedy did in 1960, and what Ronald Reagan did in 1980.

He has to meet and exceed expectations, which are not terribly high. He has to convince a plurality of voters, who seem prepared to vote for him, that he’s not a terrible risk, and that he will be a president of whom they can be proud.

He has to show the country a Trump that contradicts the caricature created by those who dominate our politics, culture and press.

The Trump on stage at Hofstra University will have 90 minutes to show that the malicious cartoon of Donald Trump is a libelous lie.

The anti-Trump stuff is so over the top that all he needs to do is show up not breathing flaming jet fuel and Hillary's whole strategy fizzles. She'll try everything she can to bait him and then clutch pearls at anything even remotely aggressive, but if he keeps his cool and relatively close to his script, basically showing the country he's not the three-headed monster she's been painting him as, the whole rationale for voting Hillary along with all her baggage becomes far less persuasive.

Not to mention it just makes her look like even more of liar for playing up the Trump threat far more than what it seems.

Of course, Trump being Trump there's always a big chance he will self-immolate, so much so that people are calling this the NASCAR debate - everyone's just watching to see which one crashes and burns.

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?

In Hillary's direction, a grateful nation just might give him a landslide victory.

and I think he IS the anti-Christ, or whatever comparable word or phrase you can come up with. Apparently his outrageous rhetoric (obliquely encouraging assassination, for example) and behavior get a pass even from many lefties. Which is not to say I am in any way praising Hillary. I despise her and her sidekick as much as anybody, but the false equivalency or even saying she's worse than Trump has caused me to have less respect for many on the left. I rarely read or comment on caucus99% these days because of this. And left TOP near the end of the primary season because commenters there were just as unrealistic in their positive assessment of Hillary.

The courage to bald-facedly and repeatedly lie to millions of people?

The courage to shift her BS according to audience, when the shifts in claims are known to millions of people?

The courage to go with the most blatant electoral cheating ever seen in America, even though competing against the appallingly blatant cheatery of the Republicans?

The courage to betray her country and people?

The courage to work toward the extinction of not only democracy, but of life and oxygen production on the planet within decades, for her personal goals of gaining unlimited wealth and power?

I wouldn't term that courage myself, but I've no doubt that others would.

The little people are lying down on the job. Must be time for some more fundraisers.

All Trump has to do is keep in mind his audience (the general electorate, not the Republican base) and avoid saying overly stupid things. Pretty low bar, nothing he can't handle.
Clinton would ordinarily be able to easily hold her own debating Trump, but I'm expecting her to be heavily medicated to the point where she will seem a little loopy. An extended coughing fit wouldn't be the end of her, it could be spun as her not being over her pneumonia yet. It might cost her a few points, but nothing decisive. A full seizure on live television and it would all be over.
I give her a 50% chance of underperforming due to medication, 45% chance of a coughing fit or wandering eye that dominates the news cycle for a few days and costs her a few points, and a 5% chance of a career ending event.
Wild card: she decides she needs to put Trump away in the first debate and goes out without medication. Her debate performance is good, but her chances of a medical malfunction go way up.
