Opinion Piece in The Hill on Conflicts of Interest in Excluding Johnson & Stein from Debates
Two parties use legitimate means to mask rigged debates
Written by a Stein supporter and a Johnson supporter:
For several election cycles, the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) - a self-proclaimed “non-partisan” private organization that sponsors the debates - has required a 15% average in hand-picked polls as the criteria for debate inclusion. This threshold makes it difficult for candidates outside of the traditional Democratic and Republican parties to appear on stage.
Like most Americans, I’ve generally accepted these polls at face value. However, a review of publicly available information shows that not only are most of the polls in question inherently unscientific, but that the CPD and its hand-picked pollsters are engaged in a concerted effort to elect establishment candidates in general, and Hillary Clinton in particular.
There are five polls being used to inform the 15% average. Two of these show blatant scientific problems: Fox News polls under-samples independents by more than 20%, and the CNN-ORC poll admits to dramatically under-sample Millennials. The polling staff have failed to return repeated requests for clarification. This level of unresponsiveness is unheard of within the formal scientific community. Thus, are the polls scientific?
It goes on to list myriad conflicts of interest, including the financial interests of the pollsters and contributions made by the 'impartial' co-chairs and board members of the commission.
Give The Hill some click-love for having the chutzpah to run this editorial and share it on social media.
And if anyone is putting together a petition to try to get the League of Women Voters involved in a 4-candidate debate, this would be an excellent part of that package.

Excellent article, MsGrin.
Calling them out is a good sign that people are fed up with the shenanigans of the system.

Can't have other candidates in the "debates"
It might give voters the idea that they have somewhere else to go, and neither major party can survive that idea catching on.

Yup, the Indies are the largest voting block and if they all voted for the only non-corporate, anti-corporate coup 'trade deal' candidate, (and if the votes were all accurately counted and all voters allowed to vote,) America could have their first female President and live to rejoice about it in improving lives with a future not limited to perhaps a few miserable decades by the extinction of the very concept of democracy and that impending of life on the planet due to unlimited industry/military pollution/destruction, far more rapidly resulting complete global ecological collapse - already in process and snowballing faster than predicted - removing oxygen production and ruthless, mindless corporate/billionaire greed/absolute control.
Who'd even want to live through all that, if they could?
Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.
A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.
Catch 22
Since the fox is guarding the debate hen house, there's nothing to stop them from changing their already-arbitrary threshold for participation. "Oh, since there's two third party candidates rising in the polls, we have changed the participation percentage to 25%. See you in four years."
The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) will do anything they have to do to stop real discussion and exclude Stein and Johnson.
Criteria should be EC registration.
If a Presidential candidate is registered in enough states to garner at least 270 Electoral College votes, he or she should be permitted to debate.
The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?
