caucus99percent.com Sale Update
Last Friday night I posted an essay stating that c99p was for sale. It was met with an overwhelming response from the membership that I did not expect. Only meant as a feeler to see if there was any interest in buying the site, it evolved into an effort to save c99p as it stands. My response to that effort was an overwhelming sense of gratitude and love for you folks. Man, I did not expect that, and it touched me deeply. I knew some folks liked this place, but wow, did I underestimate the impact that this site has had on the members who use it. I was just blown away! You folks are the best!
With of that said, after getting many solid inquiries into buying it, the decision is:
NO SALE!
The fundraiser over the weekend has netted right around $3,000.00 in direct donations to PayPal, that does not include donations that will be received via USPS, I don't know what that will amount to until they are received. Dallasdoc, in his excellent and much appreciated recurring monthly donation drive, estimated the monthly pledges at $855.00, the last I saw. For a couple of different reasons the actual recurring amounts when added up in PayPal has fallen just a little shy of that amount, but I have all confidence that Doc's figure is correct. There have been some monthlies coming in today that are just now showing up and some folks have made monthly pledges but were not able to register them with the PayPal payment form (more about that later) And some pledges were in the form of USPS mail, so I have all the confidence in the world that the $855.00 monthly pledges that Doc quoted will in fact be realized.
I've also been in contact with another member (HatTip: Oldest Son of a Sailor) about some small unobtrusive ads that will fit into the sidebars. By the way, I in no way fault any member that isn't able to donate any funds, please don't feel pressured to do so if you are strapped for cash. I have been there before and have done that, I know how it feels. These ads will be experimental for a couple of months to see how they work out. I absolutely hate ads but I think they may be a necessary evil.
With the combination of the recurring monthly contributions and the potential ad revenue I think we can make a go of it. It may not reach the goals that I posted in the comments of the "For Sale" essay, but it may come close enough. We'll rock this house trying though.
I want to thank from the bottom of my heart all that have written fundraising essays, contributed to the cause, posted positive comments and much, much great advice, and generally just being gosh darn good people. I don't want to start listing all those who contributed to this effort because I know I'll leave some out, but thank you all, you know who you are.
A couple of other tangential items; I spent the morning setting up a c99p PopMoney account (Hat Tip: LeChienHarry). Many folks requested a method of direct bank to bank transfers. This will do exactly that, both one time and recurring monthly contributions. You will need to register an account at PopMoney to send transfers, but it's easy to do and very handy as an alternative to using PayPal. After setting up a PopMoney account all you'll need is the c99p email address to transfer the funds directly. You can get that address by sending me a private message by typing my username, JtC, into the "To" field, or by sending me an email using the "Contact Us" link in the site header.
I also contacted PayPal this morning about the inability for some folks to either see the "Recurring Monthly" box or the inability to make a recurring payment at all.
Here's the deal:
Those that can see the box but cannot register a monthly payment, it's because you have to have a PayPal account to setup a monthly recurring payment. Without an account it can't be done. If you don't have a PayPal account you can make a one time payments but you can't do recurring payments.
Those that can't see the recurring Monthly box at all is because you are using an iPad or a handheld device. Pads and handhelds do not have the capability to read certain scripts and that is the case with PayPal. The advice from PayPal was to try another browser and if that fails too, then the only alternative is to use a laptop or desktop to be able to see and fill out a monthly recurring payment. The c99p PayPal code is correct and there is nothing that can be done to correct that problem except by using a lappy or desktop. Not being able to read some scripts is not limited to Paypal, that happens with other applications across the web when using handhelds and pads, it's the nature of the beast.
I'll try to make myself available as much as possible to answer questions in the comments. Again, thank you all very very much. I love you guys!

More Unsolicited Advice: The Next Step in Saving caucus99percent
In all seriousness, thanks a million to both you and joe as well as the many essay contributors who helped enormously in starting the fundraising drive. This blog is headed for bigger and better days, in no small part due to your patience, hard work, and leadership.
You are the best, JtC!

I think, at this point, TPW is a subset of those who are members here ... but we don't know how many lurk, and the site statistics (via Alexa?) have steadily improved from Day One.
I don't have time at the present moment to cross-post, but if someone here can ... please do!
(Of course, LieparDestin is also running his site with no income, so people may need to choose which to support financially. Regardless, the more independent media we have, the better).
I've Participated a Bit on TPW
However, I'm hesitant to post a fundraising appeal there for caucus99percent.
Of course if LD wants to do it, that'd be great.

I hate to belabor the obvious....
But the outstanding response of the community since Friday evening has everything to do with how much we all appreciate what you've done, JtC. You are the one responsible for this amazing outpouring of love and support. You earned it.
We all care about this place, and we all want to help preserve it. But being human beings, we sometimes need to be asked. I know you hate asking, so we're going to have to do it for you. davidincleveland had the most important idea of setting up a fundraising committee to handle the asks.
I was amazed and incredibly gratified to see the response to my essay on Saturday. The outpouring of love and generosity was really overwhelming. It confirmed why I'm here now, among the best people on the Intertubez.
This episode has reminded me that good things in our lives can go away if we take them for granted. We all have to work to keep our home and our community together. Some of us can contribute monetarily; some of us can continue to contribute outstanding content; some of us can make the community come alive in the comments; and some of us can spread the word of c99p at other sites and social media platforms. We all need to make it our business to help our community grow and prosper. The days of letting JtC and joe do it all are past. That's what I'm taking from this.
Thank you to all who have contributed donations. Thank you to all who have contributed prayers and good wishes, and to all who have spread the word of c99p and our need. Thank you to all who show up and make this the lovely place worth saving. Thank you to joe and the moderators for everything you do. And the biggest thank you of all to JtC, for doing the long and tireless work to give us this home. We have a lot of work left to do -- let's do it!
Please help support caucus99percent!

Caucus99percent is one of 2 sites where I feel comfortable commenting. In these "dark days" ahead, that is important. After several of the so-called progressive blogs shunned Bernie Sander's policies calling for a revival of FDR Democratic principles, it's nice to see this blog is still standing.
On one hand I'm thrilled
On the other hand, I am concerned that there's a pretty wide gap between $850 and $4000 and that means continued pressure for JtC. I can hope that we'll continue to get that monthly up.
Thanks for hanging with us JtC, but guard your own self also.

I share your concern.
Don't believe everything you think.
I'm not personally assuming much from advertising
I suspect that's in the wishful thinking category.
I think we need to get out there and promote articles on this site in social media and I think JtC needs to get over his awkwardness at asking money in exchange for the service he provides and simply but a nice banner ad at the top of the page saying flat out that C99 needs more monthly sponsors and
"Yes, although you might not believe it, even $5/mo helps. It may not sound like much but consider Bernie's fundraising prowess at $27/mo".

What I am hoping is that he doesn't wait to ask for moolah
til it's too late. If he's falling short one month I hope he lets us know so that people can either contribute more or step up in some other way. It's horrible asking for money, but if this is truly 'our site' we need to help him. All. The. Time.
Don't believe everything you think.
Perhaps this experience will embolden JtC in the future?
I remember the first time I ever went asking for donations and I felt awkward as hell doing it. It took one of the donors to educate me. From my standpoint, I was going hat in hand begging for dollars from complete strangers. From their standpoint, I was providing a valuable community service and they were happy I'd provided them a chance to help.
I think we can safely argue that it is the viewpoint of the person turning over the moolah that matters in that situation. After all, it IS their moolah.
Back to my main worry though, from what I've read, we've covered one month fully and then less than a quarter of all future months. We need to do better. I'm looking at doubling my monthly among other things. I still think, however, that how we help best is by advertising C99 on social media... well... and those who write the awesome content to share of course

Agreed, fundraising must continue and have an ongoing focus
We mustn't allow complacency to settle in or think "oh good, crisis averted" so we can relax now, or we will end up at another crisis point before too long.
Before this happened, I really thought the site was doing fine and was solid. Fundraising seemed a very low priority, except a couple of times to pay for technology upgrades to handle more traffic. This impression was because, I realize now, that JtC is very reluctant to ask, or to tell us there's a need.
I remember soon after I'd joined, there was a discussion where someone asked about money to keep the site going and he casually said something like oh, just give what you can, and if or when we need funds we will ask, don't worry. I guess I took that in and didn't worry. I donated $25 a couple of times just to say thanks, but honestly I didn't see a need to commit to ongoing support or dig any deeper. I assumed if money was an issue, fundraising would have a stronger focus. They would ask.
So it was quite a shock to see the for sale notice, and the reason for it. Now of course things are more clear. JtC doesn't want to ask us for money! This site was his gift to us, his work, his donation and contribution to the cause. Of course! And he sold himself short, big time. David's essay yesterday hit the nail on the head. JtC, you deserve to be paid -- supported-- for the incredible work you do for us! It doesn't make this place any less of a gift and a work of art. It should be a two way street. You give to us, we give back to you, and then we are all supported in one way or another.
As for ongoing funding. Yes, we need to make sure this happens. Transparency about what is needed, for real, and where we are in relation to the goal, every month, is needed to keep people focused on it. The community will step up. People who don't have money to give can still help in some way. We made a great start. Now to build it for the long term. Onward and upward. I find I care a great deal more about this than any damn election right now.
A couple of things: I hope Dave in Cleveland has JtC's
blessing to continue the efforts at a permanent committee for fund-raising and we get that thermobulb thing-a-ma-jig.
Also while we don't know what help has been offered, it seems several savvy folks have offered some kind of help.
I for one, hope at least some of the offers would meet with JtC's plans and ways he likes things to go.
I feel we are quite a bit short of the real goal, and hope to push and pull for more monthly subscriptions.
All the best to JtC, his family, Joe, the mods, and all who are trying to help.

I Strongly Second This Comment
Whenever David is ready to form the 'Committee to Keep c99% Afloat,' I'll be happy to contribute periodic fundraising essays towards that effort. As many of you know, I did a ton of that for years on DK for a wide variety of causes and individuals.
I can't speak for JtC, but I'm reasonably sure he's on board for this terrific idea.

Maybe the goal should be for a little more than JtC's minimum?
Could the goal thermometer show $4,000 and also say $5,000? We might actually, some months, manage that.
Maybe the extra could be earmarked for 'building fund'?
Not that I don't want Jtc to have more money -- he's worth every penny doubled and more! But, if we want to get more traffic here for donations/ad clicks, then at some point, improvements will have to be made. (Again, not that it isn't good enough!) But after the last mass migration here, I seem to remember that Jtc had to upgrade the system. More bandwidth or something?
Also, at some point, a phone app could be helpful. I don't know what all that entails. I'm told it's super expensive so I don't know if it would ever be viable.
But just a suggestion that we don't have to stop at a 'living wage' for Jtc. We can help Jtc with growing pains as well.
Just throwing it out there so don't beat me up if I'm over-stepping!

I haven't seen JtC comment about this,
but he's thought ahead already. While Dallasdoc and David were writing their fundraiser diaries, I was writing another one, more apt for places like GoFundMe.com. JtC asked me to sit on it, since he has enough money for now.
So ... I'll stop sitting on it and create a GoFundMe account when he needs the $$ again. The fundraiser diary itself is already 100% written and hangin' out with my Google docs. Heh.

in the mass confusion the last few days have been for me, I forgot to mention that. Sorry, kiddo. You may want to coordinate this with the committee, or even join them as I believe they'll be scheduling future fundraisers.
C99 should have at minimum a 4 month buffer of funds
We were able to pull the rabbit out of the hat this time. He might suffocate next time or obtain brain damage before we can react. Personally I would like more than one or two days to avert a crisis.

Yes, it is a wonderful site! On the cusp, I, too, was raised to

so far, so good. i don't spend nearly as many hours on the site as jtc does, though it does seem to take up quite a lot of my spare time. ms. shikspack sometimes shoots me a look and refers to herself as a blog widow, so i can only imagine what jtc goes through.
for me, this site/community is a labor of love and i put a lot of time into it, but i have a day job that pays the bills. i'm not averse to the idea of spending more of my time here and doing some more creative things on the site (actually, that would be really cool) and perhaps the site will grow to the point that it can support that someday down the road.
oh, the first creative thingy we should do for Joe
is an online tip hat for Ms. Shikspack. Blog widows are unacceptable to these blog's members. We need to put something into that hat, so Joe and his wife can go to Joe's Crabshack once in a while and alleviate the widow-ish feelings.
Sigh, you have my empathy or sympathy, Ms Shikspack, whatever is the right word is to say to a blog widow.
I wished we just could raise enough to make everybody happy and not feeling their labor of love turn into slave labor. No widows, no slaves, not burned out broken hearts and all that.

Always makes me grin, not just because it is a great Hendrix song, but because it is one of the most mis-heard lyrics of all time. Apparently a lot of people hear it as " 'scuse me while I kiss this guy".
But yeah, great song choice to express how thankful we all feel that there may be a way to make this work for JtC. Like many, I'm tapped out till after the first, and am trying to figure out how to squeeze the budget so that from now on, C99 can be "paid" before any of the other bills every month.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
So glad to hear this
For all of us and for you. It's a wonderful thing to be compensated for working on something you built and care about.
I tried, unsuccessfully, to make a reoccurring payment on my iPad and now see the reason why it didn't work. Will try again on my computer. If that doesn't work, I'll drop a check in the mail to you by USPS.
Great news!!! Yay!!!

Best news of the election season!!!
Gëzuar!!
from a reasonably stable genius.
Hallelujah! I'm so happy!
Another problem with Paypal is that if your have ever had an account and can not remember your password or say have a new computer and e-mail account it is impossible to even open a new account. I used to have several automatic bank payments from my checking account to Osprig and other environmental groups. I set them up so long ago I can't remember how I did it. Wednesday I'm going to the CU and see if they will set it up. My question is there a place other then the a PO box to have direct transfers each month from my CU?
Everybody's is happy today!
Thanks shaz...
see the PopMoney link in the essay. I think it's exactly what you're looking for.
POPMoney will do what you want to do.
You may choose to look the other way, but you can never say again you did not know. ~ William Wiberforce
If you can donate, please! POP Money is available for bank-to-bank transfers. Email JtC to make a monthly donation.
Venmo doesn't charge
a transaction fee if the funds come from your venmo account. They do charge 3% for credit card transactions. Would it be at all practical for you, JtC, to open an c99p account at venmo? I would like to make monthly contributions (only a pittance, sadly--I'll have to become a mad clicker once the ads are up!) and it would be easy for me and cost-free that way.
No problem if you don't choose to go this route--I am also happy to send you a check each month via USPS. In that case I'll email you for the PO Box.
I join all the other voices here to say THANK YOU to JtC for making a go of it. This is a great site and I am thrilled that it is going to continue!
Kicked in an extra donation
and I just have to do this, since nobody else has...
"But if you ask for a rise, it's no surprise that they're giving none away..."
I'm very glad indeed that the place is going to continue. I really like the musical emphasis. Carry on!
And I just found out that The Fools
are still kickin' it- can't even tell you how many shows bands I was in I played with these guys back in the day.
"No Money! No Fun! No Pizza! No Beer! No Nothing! No Nothing! No NOTHING!"
Money songs have been
going through my mind all day
That's the you do it
And of course this old saw 'but your love don't pay my bills'
So I missed your Friday essay
(trying to self-impose a weekend technology moratorium)
But I'm so happy to hear of this turn of events. I can't contribute much, but I will contribute (hopefully monthly), because we desperately need this site -- this independent, citizen-journalist site -- now, more than ever.
Thank you, JtC and everyone here. Respect.
