Saying goodbye to what was once an old friend

profile.PNG

You know what I'm talking about.
You once were close and had lots of laughs, but you grew apart. You got together less often.

And then one day you noticed that your old friend was saying some embarrassingly stupid and offensive things. So you started suggested getting together in places where your new friends wouldn't run into you, because you still liked talking about the Old Dayz.

But your old friend kept getting dumber, and you noticed that your get-togethers often ended in arguments. Still you kept meeting him out of habit.

Finally you could no longer deny that you had nothing in common with him anymore. It was time to cut the cord.

That's how I feel about both the GOS and the Democratic Party.
The transition of the Democrats to the NeoCon War Party is the last straw for me.

Full disclosure, I haven't voted Democratic since 1992. I just cheered for them because they sometimes got things right. Now they appear even worse in some ways.

I'm going to go through my old diaries and delete them, because the GOS and Democratic Party are one and the same, and I can't morally support either.
Most of them are dated, but some are timeless historical essays which I'd like to cross-post if no one minds.

Sometimes we can glean some profound personal insights from reading thoughts that we expressed while under a different mindset or belief.

So, if nothing else save them to a personal wordpress page or something for your own personal future reference.

To me, deleting writing, especially from someone who has put out so many great thought provoking pieces in the past as you have, is too close to book burning in my opinion.

I have a deep and abiding love for the written word, even those that I disagree with.

So I encourage you to purge your stuff from that shitty place, but don't purge it from existence. Who knows, you might want to go back and read it in the future and find it worth re-using after a bit of updating/editing.

If nothing else, it may be worth keeping just for nostalgia, kinda like an old diary, so in a few years you can read it and see how much your perceptions have shifted, grown or otherwise changed.

I do save everything on my hard drive and backup that I upload to the Internet - well, not comments, but diaries, yep. Just in case the Internet messes up.

I think of the first line of "Rebecca" by Daphne Du Maurier:

"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again"

It's the memory of a nice mansion I once lived in which burnt down.

I enjoyed the experience for a number of years until it became toxic and stupid. I will say one thing- Daily Kos taught me to be a better writer. You could NOT get away with any diary about any substantive issue without doing research and providing sources and you had to be prepared to defend any conclusion you had arrived at based on your personal interpretation of those sources. So it was good training overall. It taught me to be more skeptical of other writers who make assertions or assumptions based on poor evidence, unless they clearly state something is their opinion or anecdotal. For those things I will always be thankful. If I miss anything, it's the book discussions which I really enjoyed both initiating and participating in.

What I don't miss is anonymous flags, swarming bullying behavior, hive mentality, and Party censorship for which the site has become a showcase laboratory.

I have no desire to be a participant over there again.

I left the South - the bigots, the bullies and the Bab-dists like I was leaving a burning building long ago. They're everywhere now but the escape saved my sanity, if not my life.
I think most of my interminable Anthropology dissertation could really be boiled down to this word:

HIRAETH: (n.) a homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past.

And that is how I feel on my Demexit Day from the Democratic Party.

As for questioning the "official" narrative about 911 (whatever that is at any given time), question away! More than a few of us like to discuss "conspiracy theories" before TPTB reveal said theories to be actual truths.

As for what will get you banned here, there is only one Rule: Don't Be An Ass, or DBAA.

And from what I've seen, that Rule is enforced with compassion.

So, jump on in, join the conversations, and welcome to c99p!

Avoid personal barbs directed at the conversation partner. Avoid name-calling, bullying, gaslighting, or piling on.

Avoid emotional manipulation. Avoid playing on other people’s fears of rejection or general insecurity, whether on a conscious or subconscious level.

Even derision is expected to have substance. It should oppose what it is deriding in a factually supported way.

I never had that many diaries over there, but have been too lazy to figure out how to save the ones that were really important to me. It is like letting go of a toxic relationship. Something I understand too well.

If finding a publisher seems an insurmountable barrier, self-publishing is also totally a viable business model now.

Each year, I see the international book fairs in Frankfurt and Leipzig hosting more and more self-publishing authors and their co-op or partnering arrangements.

Companies that supply platforms and tools for self-publishing — Amazon being only the biggest of many — are all over these fairs as well.

That could be an interesting project.

There are certainly some talented short-form writers here, most of whom are probably too shy, too busy, too ... one thing or another to.consider putting together their own book, but . . .

What if we made a joint project of it? A get-out-the-word project, beyond the confines of these pixels on a screen? Put it in libraries everywhere! We could do this.

As for self-publishing, I would be willing to bet we could crowd-fund a limited run of a real-world paperback of illuminations and subversions.

Does the idea of The c99p Anthology (Vol. 1) appeal to anyone else? I know I'd buy several copies, one for myself and several to donate to local libraries.

I am an amateur writer (Both fiction and non-fiction) and would love to be part of such a project.

We could call it, "Letters from a progressive nation." or some such. Wink

We could even turn it into an annual or semi annual series.

Self publishing is very easy these days.

I'll help with the writing if we can get a skilled editor or two to help. Smile

The more I think about this idea the more I like it, we could even approach individual authors from other progressive blogs and such to see if they would be ok with us including their writings or comments.

This could turn out to be both a fun and informative project!
