Open Thread - Wed. July 27, 2016 - Integrity and Credibility

Good Morning, 99%'ers! Today's post is a personal one so please bear with and indulge me today.

Many years ago I worked as a land use planner in local government. Land use planning is a very politically charged environment as the real estate interests have significant sway over campaign contributions to local elected officials. Further, real estate development is often seen as a form of economic development by those same officials, so there is always a lot of pressure upon professional staff to "facilitate" permitting and development.

As planners, one of our main roles was to review any changes to the Comprehensive Plan, either text or map amendments, and make a recommendation to the elected officials for approval or denial. Most of the time, these reviews and the reports to the commissions were sent forward to them without internal disputes among staff over the recommendation.

Changes from residential to anything else were reviewed based upon a set of criteria adopted within the Comprehensive Plan so the review in most cases was very objective. Either the site met the criteria to remain residential or it did not. Occasionally we would have a site that met only some of the criteria and that would put it into a subjective call. The particular site I had been assigned to review met all the criteria for remaining residential and a change to commercial would allow for commercial intrusion and traffic to flow in a residential neighborhood. It was not even remotely borderline. So my report evaluated it against the criteria and recommended denial of the change. However, the applicant was a politically connected realtor. But as a professional staffer, that should not factor into my review, or so I thought.

After the reports were assembled, they were sent to the department head for review prior to their being sent to the elected officials. One afternoon shortly thereafter, I got a call to report to the department head's office. When I walked in, every staff member of a higher rank than me was in the office, even staff members from other divisions. I was then asked why I made the recommendation that I did. I went over the criteria and said that it was the only recommendation consistent with the Comprehensive Plan. At that point, one of the honchos in another division asked me why I loved "My Plan" so much and why could I not bend the criteria to allow for this change to go through. I was shocked. It was then that I realized I was in a kangaroo court designed to pressure me to do something that was contrary to what I saw as my professional integrity and public credibility. Not even thinking about possible repercussions, I blurted out that I would stake my job on that report and if need be, I was willing to take the fall for it. The department head was stunned that a 20 plus year employee felt that strongly. I was then dismissed from the room, not knowing what would happen next.

Even though I was under career service, long ago, I had learned that they can get rid of you if they want to and I was prepared for that to happen. But it did not happen. The recommendation stood and the elected officials voted to uphold the recommendation without any discussion.

The moral of this is I felt so strongly about my professional integrity and public credibility that I did not think about risking my job to do the right thing. I want to say that I am no hero here, every one of my colleagues probably would have done the same thing.

But I wonder how many politicians would ever do that? Maybe it is the nature of politics that you check your integrity and credibility at the door once you are elected. Yesterday, I made the comment below on an essay. It was in regard to my disappointment that Bernie Sanders was now not only endorsing Hillary Clinton but also singing praises of her qualifications and appears to be urging his supporters to vote for her.

It really makes me sad. Bernie had the chance to walk away with his integrity intact and he could not do that. It was not about him, but he owed it to all of those people who supported his campaign to not capitulate and support her whole heartedly. But he did, as has every other supposed liberal in Congress. The Clintons (and by extension the Democratic party) are simply odious They destroy everyone who comes in their way and they compromise the integrity of those who choose to work within the system.

This begs the question. Can anyone in politics survive with his or her integrity intact? I think probably not. One of my least favorite fp'ers over at LOF is fond of saying that politics is a blood sport. Yes, for those who see it as a game, it is a blood sport with winners and losers. And regardless of how bad a candidate may be on the issues or integrity, if they wear a team blue jersey, they must be supported at all costs.

The problem with that way of thinking and everything we have seen in recent years is that no one talks about the issues that matter to the people. The fact is that the people simply do not matter.

Your vote and my vote have become meaningless. My right to vote may be abridged by those in charge of the elections or it may be changed by rigged voting machines or it may not even be counted. And yet no one is talking about that. No one in the media, no one in the political arena, and least of all, Bernie Sanders. Why?

Why is it that someone who has had the entire system rigged against them, suddenly lays down at the foot of the person who did the rigging. I know that the Clintons play dirty and if you go up against them, there will be hell to pay, but Bernie had to know that going in. This could not have come as a surprise to someone like him who has been a part of the political process on the national stage for as many years as he has.

It takes courage of your convictions to stand up against power. It is not always the politically expedient way, but it is the right way. And sometimes what appears to be the wrong decision in standing up for your integrity and credibility is exactly why people see you as having integrity and credibility to begin with.

And so today, I am asking why? In my mind nothing is more important than than my integrity and credibility. The only person I have to live with 24/7 is myself. So this is why I have so much trouble understanding why Bernie folded like he did.

So that is what has been eating at me the last two days. That and a bad case of poison ivy that has been driving me nuts for nearly two weeks.

As always, this is an Open Thread, so feel free to post whatever you wish. And for those who may be interested, I will return to my series on neo-liberalism next week.

I too am very disappointed in the outcome of this primary. I take away a few other things.
1. As a long time Dem, active in our local party, I had very little idea how corrupt the national organization really is. I thank Bernie for illuminating it for me.
2. I really never knew how progressive my politics really are until Bernie opened my eyes.
3. I got more involved in supporting a campaign that I truly believe in than ever before... and will continue to use Bernie as my gold standard.
4. Whatever Bernie moves towards after the convention I will look at very seriously.
5. Bernie is a man of his word. As I understand it... before running as a democrat... he agreed to support the dem candidate... whoever it was. Personally I would have been disillusioned if he did not endorse Hillary as promised.
6. I thank Bernie over and over again for the unbelievable effort he made to win the nomination.

I went to Philly on Sunday with my Bernie tshirt. What a great time. Marching for Bernie. WOW !!
If Pa. isn't in play for the election (though I'm hearing otherwise right now), I'm voting for Jill Stein. The more I listen to her the more I like her.

Thanks for posting your feelings here. I continue to enjoy your writings.

You did the correct thing and knew the department's protocols backward and forward and when you fed in the data, you got a result in tune with policy and with the facts as given to you. You did your job.

Often - think of recent incidents at Obama's EPA - upper management will change the recommendation from the person(s) in your position and threaten you with dismissal or at least a desk in the broom closet. This is what happened at Flint, MI, when the EPA removed the regional official who took and analyzed the water samples from homes, and told the state of Michigan that the EPA worker was a "rogue" employee and Michigan would not be bothered with him again.

Congratulations for performing your job well.

whom I greatly respected, was recruited for a higher job in another agency. He was respected and popular with the public, the commissioners, and his employees until one day he refused to do amend a report to favor a big developer. He was promptly fired and many people in the public were outraged. It made the local papers and he had a priceless quote when asked why he suddenly resigned. He said, "at 3 pm today I was informed of my desire to resign." Everyone knew he had been forced out.

employee be it federal, state, or local.

You just do it, legal or not, shut off the pay check and let the poor employee fight for months and years for justice. If and when he/she finally wins, the issue that prompted the firing is settled to the satisfaction of the greedy party and management doesn't have to pay back wages, the tax payer does. It's underhanded and easy to do. Time and resources are on the side of management.

At each step of the process, a certain % of those appealing will drop out and that's why there are so many stages to an appeal like this. It also adds to the fired person's costs while management has lawyers paid for with tax dollars. Delay is a management tool.

suit are picked up by another entity, and not out-of-pocket. This was true in my case.

Indeed, the American taxpayer picks up a lot, if not all of the tab. My legal representation was excellent--traveled thousands of miles to present my case--but was not paid out of federal tax dollars.

The Plaintiffs were represented by a JAG Officer, therefore, those legal services were picked up by a military branch of service.

You nailed it, duckpin, in saying that most folks drop out (of the process). The sad truth is that very few go so far as to file a suit, in the first place.

They simply walk.

As for Bernie, I believe that he is not naive. I imagine that he simply does not have the stomach for a prolonged internal fight with Leadership, and/or possibly years of civil litigation--especially, since he could very well lose.

Obviously, we'll never really know.

Hey, thanks for the excellent OT, and personal story!

Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong.

Sorry you had to go through the ordeal you did.

Social Security disability is another area where the system is stacked against the person claiming disability. SS Administrative Law Judges are not required to clear a certain number of cases annually and are not required to turn down a certain % but these figures are published internally and there's a lot of peer pressure to clear cases and to turn down the applicant at first hearing.

Time, the system, and money are all on management's side and the multiple hurdles built in cause a certain number to call it quits at each one. Most people lack the sophistication and/or resources to fight an extended adverse action against them.

As for Bernie, it still is my gut feeling that he was threatened with something pretty terrible. The "about face" seemed to come in an instant moment of time. There was a point when he had to give it up of lose something dearer to him than us, so am guessing it involves his family.

We all know this is a reasonable possibility, especially with the email documentation. Plus, none of those people would have been stupid enough to put the really bad stuff in an email. We are only seeing those things that seemed safe to say in email.

The threat was terrifying enough to weigh against the full knowledge of letting down millions of people and facing scorn, that even then the choice was clear.

The thoughts you invoke remind me of an idea that I was thinking of is if a documentary filmmaker spent 4 years capturing hidden footage from a novice politician and used it to explore the different interactions with lobbyists and other politicians and pressures on a day to day basis? What a great film and document of our times that would be. Anyway, great essay and stay positive gg.

in our lives, some big, some small. In my opinion, most of the corporate corruption comes from the top and not the bottom. Note how you were led to a room with bigwigs and bosses and asked to explain yourself. That was certainly pressure to conform, and here you were, throwing a monkey into the works.

One story from a long time ago always stuck with me. It had to do with low-level workers at a health insurance company being given bonuses if they could find some reason to cause rescission of coverage for cancer patients, a la "oh, look! Here's a bunion you didn't mention in your application that was removed 15 years ago." I always wondered about the training they received and imagined their first day on the job - "here is a file of cancer patients. Please comb their medical records and applications and report any discrepancies. If we manage to actually rescind coverage, you'll get a bonus." And then I imagined how I would feel getting a bonus.

Or, you're the employee at a peanut factory and you know there's salmonella but you package the stuff anyway.

OR, you KNOW you are peddling an unaffordable adjustable rate mortgage to some grandmother who just wants a roof repair for the house she has lived in for fifty years, but you do it anyway because you will make a higher commission.

Or who could ever forget the ENRON traders laughing gleefully at sticking it to Grandma Millie!

Like Upton Sinclair said about it's hard to make someone see something if their paycheck involves them not seeing it. Or something like that.

(edited to include Grandma Millie- the poster person for corporate callousness and indifference if there's a buck to be made.)

standards of behavior and decency.

I always date the real beginning of the end to Gordon Gekko and "Greed is Good" and the bumper sticker "He Who Dies With The Most Toys Wins" when I realized people were actually internalizing those lessons unironically and without question. Then we got celebrity CEOs with insane compensation packages which siphoned off the capital of companies into their personal pockets without regard to the compensation of the rest of the employees or future R&D or even dividends to investors. The upper tier wanted it all and they got it all and it was never enough. Factories had to be closed, and towns decimated in order to outsource and pay third world wages and put even more into their pockets. The Masters of The Universe inverted the moral universe, the social compact, and the very lives of everyone around them in order to amass dynastic wealth. I think that's what happened in a nutshell.

now has our young people being indoctrinated in the idea that the sole purpose of education is to make themselves more marketable in the job market. I wrote about it in last week's Open Thread. I included a number of quotes in that essay, but here is a part of one that I thought was terrific. These are not my words, but a quote.

In short, when education is commoditised, it ceases to play the role of making students curious, or inquisitive or excited by the exposure to the grand world of ideas. It makes them look upon education as a capsule which they must imbibe so that they can command a better value on the job market. Commoditisation of education destroys creativity, originality, and any desire to go beyond the given, among the students. Since going beyond the given is the hallmark of creative thought, commoditisation of education destroys creative thought.

The problem is when corruption is so pervasive and nothing is being said or done about it, it starts to be come normalized and even acceptable.

unless something major is done about tuition. The huge cost of higher education has caused everyone to look at it as an upperlevel voc-tech that has to be specifically tailored to the job market.

And yet, I have a good friend who was buried in "where the jobs are" articles before enrolling and coming out of two years of community college and follow up at university with a degree in Physical Therapy - a no brainer! BUT the therapy companies now employ numerous"therapy assistants" doing an actual therapists job under the supervision of a degreed therapist AND they no longer employ staff therapists, they are all "independent contractors" working on temporary gigs. Also, talk to people with tech and computer degrees who train their own replacements coming in with hb-1 visas or nurses who see their hospitals recruiting overseas in order to reduce the wage scales.

IMO the only career moves which are somewhat safe for young people are:

Learn a language and move overseas to be an ex-pat at a foreign university, which will lead to a massive "brain-drain" of this country OR

Go into the trades like HVAC, car mechanic, etc.

Invent something and crowd-fund it

My BA is in music. I always used to say that I regretted having just a music degree because the only kind of job you could get is to be a teacher, and I never wanted to be a teacher. Eventually I found a teaching niche - computer multimedia - and really enjoyed it - but that took over 10 years.

I don't know that I have a solution because our culture is somewhat artistically messed up. Rather than making our own music and art, we just listen and watch the music and art of others.

The Internet/YouTube etc. is actually changing this somewhat. Twenty years ago you had to be "discovered" to publish and share your art, music, and creative writing. Publishers, record companies, and movie studios owned you and your work. Now, anyone can publish a Kindle book. Anyone can write a song and perform it on YouTube. Anyone can create works of art and have an Internet art show. Whether you can earn sustainable income on your art or not is a question.

Maybe we need to change our world view of how we live our lives??

which is why some countries are investigating the possibility of providing a minimum INCOME to their citizens. They realize that will be a lot cheaper in the long run than having unemployed/underemployed residents who may be forced into stealing food and committing crimes or turning to other illegal activities simply as a means to survival and then creating enough prisons and staff to house them all.

We, on the other hand, are investigating how we can take food from the mouths of the hungry in our SNAP and food supplement programs by forcing poor and hungry people to waste time, money, gas and energy applying for non-existent jobs, thus reducing their income even further. But I also am of the opinion that we work away from home too much anyway.

It seems like a lot of people don't like Thomas Freidman, but I really liked his 2011 article "The Earth is Full," where he states:

You really do have to wonder whether a few years from now we’ll look back at the first decade of the 21st century — when food prices spiked, energy prices soared, world population surged, tornados plowed through cities, floods and droughts set records, populations were displaced and governments were threatened by the confluence of it all — and ask ourselves: What were we thinking? How did we not panic when the evidence was so obvious that we’d crossed some growth/climate/natural resource/population redlines all at once?

“The only answer can be denial,” argues Paul Gilding, the veteran Australian environmentalist-entrepreneur, who described this moment in a new book called “The Great Disruption: Why the Climate Crisis Will Bring On the End of Shopping and the Birth of a New World.”

And then Mr. Freidman goes on to discuss the contents of the book.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/08/opinion/08friedman.html?_r=0

This Mr. Gilding believes the climate crisis will bring us back in line. Will it?

from the other day - just happened to be really busy that day. Must look it up.

You are so right about the commodification of education. Now it is only a means to an end, rather than something to be savored.

I watched it happen, starting my first teaching job in '79 working until 2011. Starting out in the upper-midwest then moving to Texas the commodification seems to have happened much earlier here. Maybe it has always been that way. Very little emphasis on arts education in Texas. There are pockets of beauty (actually fabulous pockets of wonderful art and music), but it is not part of the mainstream educational goal. There are gobs of K-12 schools that have almost no art or music. Testing and sports!

We homeschool our teenage kids, mostly to accommodate dyslexia, but also to give them freedom to explore.

My question is . . . how do we turn this around? I can make it happen for my kids. It seems like it doesn't even enter the minds of educational administrators in Texas that the arts are vital. The word "creativity" has become a buzzword, so there will be teacher workshops on how to make your students be creative. Even then they just don't get it.

This comment could be an essay of its own. When I wrote the essay last week on the commodification of education, I did it from the perspective of someone who is outside the education system. It was only an attempt to scratch the surface, but I think it could be a series unto itself.

Most of us think about the privatization of schools via the charter schools, but what is more insidious to me is how the goal of education has been turned upside down. I am in my late sixties and when I was younger, liberal arts degrees were highly valued by employers because they meant that the prospective employee had a very well rounded education and had good critical thinking skills.

True . . . the charter school thing is a messed up deal . . . but you are so right . . .

", but what is more insidious to me is how the goal of education has been turned upside down."

And it all started in the 80s with the Gordon Gecko "greed is good" thing. I was there and part of it - started an MBA at a yuppie school - finished with a MA in media communications management. Fun, but ultimately worthless career wise. But maybe I should really look at it with the liberal arts mindset. I enjoyed it!! Guess it shaped me somewhat.

This perversion of education is just part of the larger perversion of society in the United States. I was deeply moved by Alex Ocana's recent essay. We are too trivial and greedy.

GG, I have been wondering the same things regarding Bernie's switch myself. things started to look serious after he walked out scowling after his meet n greet with Obama. Then he seemed to have a little less fire in his speeches. TYT videos also showed at the DNC less energy in his speech to the Bernie delegates, yes they still cheered him, up until he tried to get them behind Her Majesty.

This all make me wonder what they could possibly hold over his head that make him switch from opposing the corrupt system to being their lap dog? I say that because giving her any support as he did plays into their hands, and then asking folks to NOT protest as they felt strongly and were far angrier than he was over the shenanigans played on his campaign this primary season, as he seemed to let things pass that deserved no pass.

Once things came out as to how perfidious the DNC was, all his vows of fair play were negated, he owed them not one shred of support, and heading to the Greens would have served them right , and galvanized a move to the left that would gut the Dems more than this convention of lies and Bull-hockey would dare show.

Criminals, corporate butchers, and billionaires run this nation, all that FDR did for us is targeted for removal, Bernie would have preserved and strengthened that had he won a contested convention as he had promised before the turn around. He wanted to fix things from within, he has seen that is not gonna happen, they like their money induced corruption, and he has been shown something behind the curtain that made him stop cold and reverse for them.

What did they hold over his head???

Considering his integrity, would that have been enough? After all, he is likely looking to retire at some point. I have the idea that they also threatened to make life hell for his kids and grand-kids jobs and career wise if they could if he refused to knuckle under or some such as he does wish to leave a decent legacy behind. But that is a blind shot in the dark.

I do like that you also showed a good amount of decency and integrity, it was a trait my Father encouraged while he worked for a major cosmetics company and then the state of NY IRS as an auditor. He is now 80, and retired. We need people like that in local offices and positions.

If he has so little money, it should be a pretty quick and easy thing to do. Being too busy sounds really lame for someone in their position.

Threats to him, family and kids really sound like tinfoil, but who knows. If he were a young man, his career might matter. He's 74. All he needs to do is take his pension and go play with his grandkids or form a third party and lead a real revolution. Second careers are usually so much better than the first.

Talk about being attached to the public teat, politicians all have to be carried out in body bags.

Agreed. The failure to release the tax returns was an inexplicable error. What could possibly be in there that he and Jane felt they had to hide?

I saw her in interviews at least twice say that the returns would be released "when they got back to Vermont" or at some not-so-distant time. But they never were.

Whatever it is/was, I think he could have weathered it, but clearly he and Jane didn't think so.

We are here not to reform the system. We are here to overthrow it. And that is the only possibility left to restore our democracy and save our planet. If we fail in this task, if this system of corporate capitalism and globalization is not dismantled, we are doomed. And this is the reality no one wants to speak about.

I recommend you for writing this out. I would not be capable of doing the same. It's just too complicated and as it destroyed so much, I want to forget it. But that will never be the case. I have seen too many men being destroyed psychologically for having gone through betrayals that were forced upon them to accept and be silent about. It corrodes characters and souls.

With regards to Sanders, yes, I can't follow his premature endorsement of Clinton. He has some yuuuge explaining to do, one day. I feel discouraged, disappointed and saddened and somewhat betrayed. Unless we find out a reason that can convince us over the necessity for him to do that, I guess this experience will leave some bitter memories behind. It is hard to get conned by someone you trusted. It's even worse, when you don't know if you can judge if it was conning or something else.

Watching the video coverage, I realized that the images of people still protesting consistent with their convictions gave me some short glimmers of hope, but nevertheless, I feel like crying all the time. Of course there is more to it than just the political developments, but all in all, it's really hard to not give up.

From Jared Huffman who is supposed to be representing all of Northern California no kidding. Heh the message went directly to spam again not sure why. Maybe all Democratic emails are being marked spam by the giant sky lists. LOL "pick up the phone" if you know what I mean. Communication breakdown much? Anyway, look at the size of CD-2 Bernie won 53.1% to 46.3%. Solidarity! Now tell me what you make of this if you don't mind:

Motivated by recent studies showing that over half of households age 55 and older have no retirement savings, I am working on a proposal to help those Americans by providing new options to help save for a strong, stable, secure retirement. Earlier this summer, my co-sponsor Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) and I introduced the American Savings Account Act. This legislation would build on the success of the high-quality retirement investment plan offered to federal workers since 1986 by making that plan available to every American who works in the private sector and doesn’t have access to an employer-sponsored savings account like a 401(k). This voluntary option would be in addition to Social Security, and it would give millions of hardworking citizens a new opportunity to ensure a secure and dignified retirement. More information on how this legislation will help North Coasters like you here.

Please take note I replaced the original email link with one that goes straight to the poop, and not the DNC tracking lists. Okay "help North Coasters like (me)" like the ACA is helping Californians with mandatory 17% increase this year? Should I waste any calories following the money to this savings proposal? nenni ekki

Don't say mandatory retirement savings, omg the banks must be drooling. Automatic opt-in? Gosh I hope I read that wrong.

voluntary. He also talks about the Federal Employee TSP.

The article seems to speak to mandatory inclusion in something that the private investment rip-off con-artists can get their hands on, which is a different animal completely.

Having voluntary access to the TSP, assuming penalty free withdrawals, would be a good thing. The investment manager is, unless things have changed, on straight compensation, with no incentive to screw around. It is about as close to "no load" as one can get and has a pretty good sized investor pool.

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --

Thoughts of Tammany Hall and its demise have been flooding through my brain recently, as has FDR's quote about his enemies: "I ask you to judge me by the ENEMIES I have made."

Tammany Hall was a New York City Democratic political patronage machine, which grew increasingly corrupt over the years, since its inception in 1786. Nobody could control it, until FDR decided to strip it of federal patronage in 1932. Locally, FDR teamed up with Republican mayor, Fiorello LaGuardia, to clean house and support reform candidates only. It worked and, despite a brief resurgence, the Tammany machine never recovered.

What does this have to do with Bernie? The Clinton machine is a neoliberal iteration of Tammany Hall. It makes and breaks politicians. Its corruption is boundless, reaches to the highest office in the land, and extends beyond national borders to foreign governments. I believe if the Moon was colonized, they'd have an outpost there.

Bernie took on the Clinton machine. We believed him when he said he'd take his fight for us, the 99%, to the convention. We pointed to his years in service in Congress, his filibusters, his success with inserting amendments into bad bills, as proof that he's the real deal.

Then, the "real deal" crumpled when the entire Clinton-owned establishment declared war on him, and us as well. No explanation was offered to us, his supporters; just retreat, humiliation, obeisance, and endorsement. The "real deal" giving up makes sense if no other options exist, but they do:

Bernie had proof of electoral fraud and disenfranchisement, but didn't follow through in the courts or publically. The release of the DNC emails before the convention was further evidence the primaries were rigged and Bernie could have made a big deal of them, but chose not to. And the pledge Bernie made at the start of his campaign - to support the nominee, had the tacit understanding that it was based on a fair and square primary process. Any rigging of that process, IMO, should invalidate the original pledge, just like a party who breaches the terms of a contract invalidates it. So, Jill Stein's offer to run on the Green ballot as president, offered Bernie a lifeline and a place for him and his supporters to go and start a viable third party. That was his and our ticket out of Palookaville. Lastly, what if the Clintons and Obama threatened Bernie's life? Or his family members? All Bern had to do was hold a press conference and calmly relay this tidbit, naming names. Then, should the perpetrators be stupid enough to carry out the threat, they'd be busted by their very actions. End of threat.

When I think about what could have, and should have been, if Bernie had found the courage and integrity to do right by us and use his options, I feel like we've been collectively gut punched, and my heart is broken.

and today they asked me to continue them via email. I unsubscribed to Bernie. I cried doing it, but damn, I have no faith anymore in where that little money would go and I no longer want to hear the fear of the Rump. Sad, I was on board with Bernie since last summer, and while I always knew that he was most likely not going to be nominated, I still had some hope that if enough numbers turned out he might. And then to see just how bad the Dem party is - I've read Thomas Frank, I knew they were bad, but this bad? I can honestly say I was naïve enough to think I would never see this open corruption in my lifetime out of a Democrat. I expected it fully from the other side, but damn.

He had every right at this point to run third party and did not choose it. God only knows what they held over his head but it had to be pretty big and pretty ugly. Might be direct threats to him, his family, his supporters or could be that they let him know in no uncertain terms that if he were to go on and help expose any FURTHER corruption, like say those Clinton Foundation emails come out fully, this whole shit show comes crashing down. Bernie still believes in this establishment and apparently Capitalism somehow, so I wonder about that. As many out here have stated, his tone started to change just a bit after his big meeting with the ultimate sell out shill, Barack Obama. Obama surely knows about death threats, and maybe it really is just that simple, ugly and base at the end of it all - vote for me or I kill ya. Jeezus.

And I admire yours gulfgal.

I also very much admire Bernie's integrity. I respect and trust that he is still adhering to his integrity. His work is in the arena of Party Politics. That must be a hard place to hold onto one's integrity.

I an thankful for the people willing to go into politics these days ( I wouldn't want to but someone has to!) and I sometimes give them a pass on some things they do. I try not to be an absolutist, but more a forgiver. It is true that in politics there is going to be compromise. THere are winners and losers. There are powerful and power-less. That is the nature of it.

Bernie did always say he would not go 3rd Party and that he would endorse the eventual nominee. I trust and believe Bernie that he truly believes Trump would be bad for America and for the Progressive movement. I agree. There would be SO much more ground to make up if Trump and the GOP win all branches. Privatize our National Parks and Lands; more voting restrictions; more Scalia's on the court; more abortion restrictions; harsher immigration laws; total disregard for Climate, etc, etc. I live in a GOP controlled state (NC) and it is horrible. Our local Dems put up a good fight.

I have heard that Bernie is going to be an Independent again. Let's see what comes after election or inauguration day. I read the transcript between Robert Reich and Chris Hedges on Democracy Now! Reich is talking about a 3rd Party. He is close to Bernie. Let's see what develops. We have seen new leaders emerge too: Nina Turner, Tulsi Gabbard, Ben Jealous, Ellison, etc.

Nothing (and everything) is perfect in this world, least of all politics. Still we perservere and move forward. What elese is there to do?

And yes, I live part time in NC and part time in Florida where I vote, so I have seen the ugliness of the neo-liberal ideology up front. It is demoralizing to watch the future of our citizens slip away to people as odious as the Clintons or Trump.

Like I wrote, today's essay was a personal one. We need truth tellers and people of good will to help lead us out of the corrupt quagmire we are now in.

I think we have to acknowledge that we don't know what happened behind closed doors. We don't know what all the issues were.

The reality is that whenever a candidate uses the Democratic party to get an elected position he has to use their system, and make their deals. He lives in their world. This is a situation which has happened many times, and its going to go on happening.

In the end, I don't think that attacking Sanders is a useful thing to do for progressivism. He helped get the message out. We are in this position because there are so few real progressives left. If we can change that and move the country back to a more realistic view of how the world works, it will be far more difficult for them to treat candidates this way, and if necessary, maybe we can simply create or take over another party.

In the end, I think that's the way we have to look at it. People believe stuff that just isn't true. We need to keep getting the message out between elections. We need to change people's minds.

I am very allergic to poison ivy. The reason I am pretty sure is about two weeks ago while I was doing my morning walk on a very narrow residential street that is hardly ever traveled, a pickup truck came up behind me going way too fast. It startled me and as I jumped out of the way, I fell into a very shallow drainage ditch that was lined with poison ivy. Even though I showered after I got home, it was too late and my one arm and part of my side are covered with the rash. Hopefully I am getting toward the end of this, but it is driving me crazy right now. Wacko

doesn't believe the election was stolen from him. If he did, he would make a stink. He is not making a stink, because he doesn't believe it was stolen. And he's now banging the drum, leading the parade, for The Mad Bomber, because that's what he always said he would do. Support the party's nominee.

Politicians are not profiles in courage, because the people are not profiles in courage. The only person to vote against the AUMF was Barbara Lee, because hers was the only district in the nation where the voters wouldn't throw her out on her ass, if she said no. Not even the sainted "anti-interventionist" Ron Paul, or the aforementioned Mr. Sanders, felt so confident.

Guantanamo isn't closed because the voters don't want it closed. They want those men imprisoned, they want them tortured. Office-holders pants-wet at the thought of going against those voters, to close it. In 2004, all of Abu Ghraib was fully known, and the voters returned George II to office anyway. Because that's what they wanted.

Frank Church not so long ago represented the state of Idaho; George McGovern, South Dakota; Fred Harris, Oklahoma. That no longer happens not because those men changed, but because the voters did.

Politicians do address the issues that matter to people. That is why The Hairball is so successful. Because it really does matter to his voters that brown people be scorned and deported and Blamed and mocked and tortured and killed. Just as there isnt anything at all "the matter" with Kansas. Those people absolutely do vote their "self-interest." They just define their self-interest differently than Frank & Co. think they should. To them, it is most important, most in their self-interest, to bitterly cling to their guns and their religion and their hate. Just as The Kenyan said. I know. I deal with such people every day. Not in theory. Not on some tube. In the actual world.

Good for you on the land use. Did you have civil service/union protection? Out here land use is the big deal, too, though the vampires are mostly trying to gobble up agricultural land, for residential, rather than residential for commercial. The decisions sway to and fro, depending on whether the realtor candidates are in office or not, but, regardless, the actual planners don't get booted. Which is as it should be.

shaharazade's picture

We all do face such moments and many of us do the right thing. This last couple of decades has seen a change from integrity to 'I've got mine so screw you'. A crooked realtor lives down at the end of our street. He used to lecture me on how to play the game. He gave up on us as we're 'materially challenged'. The developers, investors and realtors own this city and are demolishing it literally. In our case the city planners are not honest they are as corrupt as the pols. I wish we had more people in our city hall like you.

I don't really think politicians on any level these days local state or national, have integrity if they do they get gerrymandered or worse. Somehow winning and dirty deals called compromise always obstructs their ability to do the right thing. I read somewhere that Bernie did not have the 'killer instinct' to run and win as presidential candidate. Perhaps he actually thinks that the Democratic party is salvageable or can be as he says revitalized. I see no integrity in what he has done especially at the convention. When he said this is the most progressive platform ever he was lying. Al was right he was the designated sheep dog. I do think that the amazing sheer numbers and enthusiasm in the movement he gave voice to freaked the Clinton machine right out. Hence they had to put in the fix.

gulfgal98's picture

I have observed over the years. When I was younger, it was much easier to choose the path of integrity because that was an admired trait. Now it is far more difficult because our system rewards the winners, regardless of how they win. IMO, the bank bailouts and the failure to prosecute those responsible for the economic collapse probably more clearly demonstrated that to the public at large. So while it had been going on for long before that time, this was the first time it became so overt.
