The c99 Weekly Watch...a cooperative project
Through much of my life, Sunday morning was the time to watch intelligent discussion of the weeks news on “Meet the Press” or “Face the Nation”. The Sunday edition of the newspaper published its most detailed stories. Today the corporate media is doing its best to distract, distort, and mislead the public in order to maximize their profits by presenting their corporate propaganda as news. I think that is why many of us are here.
For the last few weeks several folks have been writing and thinking about a better news venue. To that end, the concept of a weekly news summary has emerged. Here's the idea, using a format similar to the evening blues, the weekly will present the major news stories of the week, both print and video, using links and short one or two line descriptions. I would like this to be a cooperative project and many of you have expressed interest in participating.
So, here's how you can help. During the week when you read or watch a piece that is important or meaningful, message me, Lookout, with the link and a short one sentence description. If you would like to be more involved in a media and editorial team let me know. I'll do my best to cherry pick your essays and the Evening Blues as well.
I'm open to suggestions as to how to best present the weekly. My thought is to make it link based for easy loading and possibly emailing (rather than full of embedded video). Would you want links in groups to cut and paste? Do you like the Evening Blues mixed media format, or would it be more convenient to group print and video separately for cut and paste? My organizational view is to have three sections national, world/international, and global/environment, but I'm open to suggestions.
Please chime in below with your ideas, and message me if you would like a more active role in this project. I hope to get out the first issue next Sunday. Thanks to JtC for providing us a home (send him some love if you can afford it) and to Joe for his advice in the development of The Weekly Watch.
I look forward to hearing your ideas about what should be...
And add any item of interest today.

I like the idea of 1-2 sentences and a link.
I have regularly visited buzzflash for years to get a quick recap for potential articals to read.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Irreconcilable problems.
But then I have irreconcilable problems with Trump and Hillary too.
I just want a 3rd party to win a few states, while being shut out of the debates, to further expose just how broken and corrupt our political system is.
I'm with you brother
You think the libertarians might win a state or two? Sure wish Jill could, but I can't see which state she might win.
I appreciate your insight and resources. I've learned a lot about the global economy from you.

actually, there's no evidence Johnson was bought.
He didn't have to be.
The "Libertarian" blind faith in "free markets" (which exist about half as much as the Tooth Fairy does) results in bizarro consequences like this. It's the consequences of beLIEving in things like "unregulated free markets" which cannot exist.
Once any capitalist becomes strong enough to dominate a market, the first thing that capitalist always does is to lock all competitors out of that market. And only State regulation has ever worked to prevent that, and keep "the markets" as free as they can be.
Capitalism is what free enterprise deteriorates into. Regulation exists for many public good reasons, but the first among these is to keep enterprise as free as possible (at least in the USA). The 35 year "golden era" between 1945 and 1980 epitomizes that. Areas like landline telephone and electric power -- natural monopolies -- were either publicized or had the living fuck regulated out of them. Everywhere else, mergers were tightly regulated to prohibit the formation of monopolies.
Then Ronald Reagan -- and Clintons after him -- occupied the Oval Office, and all of that came to a swift end. And lo and behold: free enterprise expired immediately in most genuinely profitable sectors of the economy. And the medicine Johnson prescribes: more of the same.
Bizarro in, bizarro out.

A Better Fit
I never bought into the idea that the Mormons would back Hillary just to shtup Trump. Johnson being a Westerner himself, and having been a "conservative" governor, tells me he's more their idea of a candidate.

'C99 Weekly Watch' is a great idea! One question,
though--reading your opening paragraph, I'm not certain if we are allowed to submit print pieces from mainstream media print sources. Or, if only pieces from progressive media are allowed.
Thanks.

any and all sources...
are welcome. What should we be aware of ? Sometimes, that's what the MSM is saying. Please contribute. You have a good eye for important stories.

I'm just one person
but maybe not totally alone on this, so here's a thing:
I'm on rural internet in the USA (meaning that it's very poor quality), and if there are more than two embedded videos, my browsers crash. I'd love to see the Open Thread posts with the news items, but I stay out of them because I have this problem.
Otherwise, I like this idea.

My old iPad can’t load any video-rich open threads either.
Even with a good broadband connection.
I also have trouble with
video-rich threads on my cell phone. I really like the idea of this weekly round-up, but it would only work for me if video links rather than embeds were provided.
Thanks for your efforts, Lookout. If you provide the platform, I'll be more than happy to send you links to interesting content I come across.

with just links
and no embedded video it should be fairly easy to download. Let me know how the first issue next week works for you. I'm in the boonies too. I pay for 3 meg service and get about 1 meg. So I feel your pain, but it sure is better than dial up!

I was thinking of doing a "Latin American (News) Beat"
on an irregular basis. I'll just send you the news items in a message, instead. Two or three sentences with a link to the source. Cool?
There is indeed a lot happening that the MSM doesn't report. I think I read somewhere that many news companies shut down overseas offices to save money, so now they rely on pooled reports for coverage.
Citizen journalism, a la Steven D, can fill the gaps.
Hey, how about a "1% Watch," reporting on the antics of the 1%? Like "Right Wing Watch," but concerning our billionaire oligarchs and their political toadies?

Thanks.

I haven't watched the
Sunday wonk shows in years, mostly becuz it's the same ol' tired Beltway "wonks" yacking about stuff most viewers have a better clue about. When you, the viewer, are smarter than the retread wonks - and most are - then it's time to turn the channel. Watch swamp people hunt gators or something.

Technical question, maybe for JtC
With a load of links to peruse it would be nice if the link opened in a new window. I hate having to go back and find the thread cause the back button doesn't always work. I'm running Safari on a MacBook Pro and opening a new window works well for me. Don't know if it's a problem with other browsers/hardware. In fact I'd like to see it here all the time - my only complaint about the site.

I have no idea if this will work with your setup but
I have the same problem: I prefer links to open in new tabs because the 'Back' button doesn't always take you back where you want to go.
To that end (with Chrome on an Android) I press and hold the link for a few seconds. That gives me a pop-up window with a number of selections, one being 'Open link in new tab'.
Solves the problem but creates one more: I always have well over 100 windows open no matter how much I read and bookmark. Sigh.

Try holding the command key down while clicking on the link
That’s what works on my Mac, if I want to force a link to open in a new tab or window.
Thanks for the tip, lotlizard
Holding down the command key forced the new window open. Yeah!!!

Same problem with FF and Win10
Some commenters seem to have found a way for their link to open on a new page. That would be a wonderful option or mandatory (haha, c99).
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
That is an easy fix.
Right click on the link. A pop up will ask you if you want to open it a new tab or a new page. I believe you can also configure chrome so that all links open in new windows. You don't need JtC. Check out your IOS.

Thanks, dk
Right clicking also works although lotlizards fix with the command key is faster for a Mac. Guess I'm just a luddite - just learned yesterday how to embed a video, LOL!

Then here is one article I consider important enough
to be included in the C99p Weekly Watch. YMMV. But then ...
