Video News Open Thread: Stephen Colbert and the RNC
Since we have been discussing a more video-oriented open news thread and since this week and next week, during the conventions, Stephen Colbert is going to provide coverage, I thought I'd post as I have time for these two weeks. Consider this an experiment as we mull over the best way to present video news.
From last night, there were about four Late Show clips on YouTube, but I think this one was the best:
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fM3ryY7mgPI width:500]
"Headlining 'Make America Safe Again' tonight was noted security expert, Melania Trump"
Stephen actually thought Melania's speech "very impressive," and all over the news today is the fact that it is Michelle Obama's speech from 2008! Why yes, Michelle does give an impressive speech. Even when someone else reads it for her.
This is an open thread. Please feel free to add videos in the comments, discuss the RNC, Colbert, politicians, video news, plans for the future, whatever rocks your world!
Edited to add cat video producer logo

With only 2 options, 1 out of 2 ain't bad!
"US govt/military = bad. Russian govt/military = bad. Any politician wanting power = bad. Anyone wielding power = bad." --Shahryar
"All power corrupts absolutely!" -- thanatokephaloides
Ha ha! "Donad Trump wants to be President for all of us."
Oh yes, Mr. Selfless, I call him. Also Mr. No-Ego.

Hey, EC! Got a video of O's plagiarism from 2008. Gotta run
an errand, but I'll try to post it here (and maybe at EB) when we get back.
It is along the lines of Melania's speech 'lifting' from Michelle's.
Except that someone 'lifted' lines from a Patrick Deval speech. (Former Dem Governor of Massachusetts.)
Now, Biden's plagiarism was real--and serious. It involved foreign policy positions.
Later.

It's hard to make fun of Trump
It's hard to make fun of Trump. Comedians ran out of good material many months ago. He's been in the race more than a year now.
"We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty."
Oh I don't know. There's so much material there to work with.
Some of it never gets old.
Let's revisit, for example, that plagiarism runs in the Trump family:

I knew I heard "Make America great again" before!

Donald Joking About Banging His Daughter
And we thought the Bill and Monica thingie was creepy. This just proves Donald will say anything without thinking no matter how inappropriate. Amazing that he is gonna get nominated tonite.
Donnie The #ShitHole Douchebag. Fake Friend to the Working Class. Real Asshole.
Oh dear. I thought there was another push from the
NeverTrumps today.
Well, I just googled it. Apparently it didn't go anywhere important. He's nominated, all right.

evening ec...
pretty good segment. i'm glad to see colbert doing more political humor. i had caught some of his new show earlier on and it really seemed to have lost a lot of the zip and punch of his comedy central show.
Evening, Joe! More eveningy!
I think the Late Show still tends to start out kind of silly. But he does from time to time get more into the politics. All the later shows seem a bit more political these days than they used to be.
But really, with Trump and the RNC, the comedic gifts that keep on giving, who can resist?

The Jon Stewart of Egypt

Egyptian comedian Bassem Youssef joins us in Cleveland, where he too is covering the Republican convention. His former show was known as "The Daily Show" of the Arab world for its satire of politics in Egypt and the Middle East. The program "El Bernameg" was launched after former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was ousted from power in the 2011 uprising. It became the most popular TV series in Egypt’s history, with as many as 30 million views per episode. During Mohamed Morsi’s presidency, "El Bernameg" came under increasing pressure, and in 2013 an arrest warrant was issued for Youssef for allegedly insulting Islam and Morsi. Youssef was interrogated and subsequently released on bail, but the pressure continued under the next regime, and in 2014 he announced he was taking the program off the air, just days after General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was elected president. Once he could no longer make fun of Egyptian politics, he moved to the U.S. to satirize American politics. His new show, "Democracy Handbook," airs on Fusion.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
That is awesome, thank you! I hadn't heard of Democracy
Handbook, but will definitely start watching it. It is available on YouTube, https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=democracy+handbook+bassem+y...

Watching Colbert is the best way to endure the Trump fiasco
I also enjoyed watching these two other two Colbert's videos.

and

Personally, it's the only way I can handle watching that hate fest...

is this going to be a weekly feature...
do you want me to peg it in the Groups section in the right sidebar?
Hmm... Yes, I think it probably needs a place on the right
sidebar for the group with the essay queue. Thanks! I'll add a Video News tag for our official tag. I was actually thinking of posting daily for the days of the conventions, irregularly after that. I tend to watch a lot of YouTube, can pick out a few favorites here and there.
This idea was tossed around in an open thread, one of Joe's I think. Anyone who wants to be more organized about it is welcome to take it over from me!

All right! We're officially a group! Thanks, Johnny!
Come one, come all, please feel free to join and write and post and display videos and make of this group what you will!

Thank you, EC! I got so behind schedule,
that I'll just post the plagiarism video tomorrow evening.
Politicians in general are so corrupt--it's breathtaking. I think one reason that VP Biden could never become President, was the serious plagiarism breach that he committed decades ago. (Nothing like O's and Melania's.)
Hey, I'm glad to see that you'll have a link in the sidebar. I'm seriously considering trying my hand a making some cell phone videos. Now, if I do, I'll have a venue to post them.
Love the photo of the kitty at the computer. This will be a lot of fun!

Glad you made it back, UL!
By all means, please add to the fun tomorrow! I vaguely remember the previous plagiarism charges, but honestly didn't pay that much attention. The plagiarism I really remember was that of Rand Paul, since he is my Senator (embarrassing but true).
Should I keep a schedule so we have no more than one open thread a day?
Thanks! That kitty is not at any old computer. That's modern professional video editing equipment. At least, per the site I borrowed that part of the photo from. I added a photo logo so it would look cool when I Facebooked it. Which I think it did!

Naw, this won't hurt a bit...

Wow. She is SO going to lose.
