Open Thread for July 18, 2016; Nelson Mandela International Day
July 18 is the 199th day of the year. There are 166 days left.
18 is a multiple of 9, 3, and 6, leading to suspicions that it will generate unending fractions (more later)
18 is the sum of 3 of its divisors, 3, 6, and 9
18 is argon, a noble gas
18 is the group containing noble (inert) gases in the periodic table
The Mahabarata has 18 books, (including the Bhagavad Gita which has 18 chapters) and concerns a war between 18 armies that lasted 18 days
OK, deep breath, but first recall that 1/3 is .333 repeated forever, 1/6 is .666 repeated forever and 1/9 is .111 repeated forever.
1/18 = 0.055 repeat 5 forever
2/18 = 0.111 repeat 1 forever (1/9)
3/18 = 0.166 repeat 6 forever (1/6)
4/18 = 0.222 repeat the 2 (2/9)
5/18 = 0.277 repeat the 7
6/18 = 0.333 repeat the 3 (1/3 = 3/9)
7/18 = 0.388 repeat the 8
8/18 = 0.444 repeat the 4 (4/9)
9/18 = .5 (1/2)
etc.

Thanks EL if I turn 18 counter clockwise
forty fiveninety degrees it is like infinity underlined. My mom walked on when I was 18. On July 28th, what a symbolic day that will be (for me) the death of a major political party too. Here is the Mandela Effect site: MemoriesIn the comments many many people really do remember exactly things that never did happen. How is it?
Edit: the strikethrough. lol I thought hard about that too, not hard enough. thanks again el.
I think you mean 90 degrees. Thanks for the comment.

Green party efforts
There was good news from Arizona this weekend -Arizona Secretary of State Michele Reagan and the Arizona Green Party have struck a deal allowing the party’s presidential candidate on the November ballot despite the party’s failure to file its nomination papers for Electoral College delegates on time.
www.jill2016.com/events
Presumptive Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein will make a campaign stop in Stamford Thursday as part of a Connecticut tour to obtain signatures to place her name on the state’s November ballot. Stein is scheduled to speak at the Stamford Innovation Center, 175 Atlantic St., between 6 and 7:30 p.m. to promote her candidacy.

How many numbers are sums of their divisors?
Mild headache here. Storms blowing in, likely misses because I am now living in severe drought conditions (in NY!!!!).
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
Well, 18 is the sum of only some of its divisors. "Perfect
numbers" are the sum of all of their divisors excepting themselves. There are some theorems about them, and it is unknown if there are an infinite number of them or not. The first 4 are 6 (1+2+3), 28 (1+2+4+7+14), 496, and 8128, so they clearly get scarcer and scarcer.
That doesn't address your question, but I would expect that numbers like 18, that are the sum of some of their divisors are more common, maybe a lot more common. It seems that one could create an infinite number of them by creating a series of even multiples of the known ones. 12 = 6+1+2+3, 24 = 12+6+1+2+3, 36 = 18+3+6+9, 72 = 36+18+3+6+9, etc.

it feels possible to work out the sequence
6, 28, 496, 8128....I just have a feeling there's a formula that would give us the next number. If so, I'm sure it's well known among mathematicians.
Yes and no, there is a formula, involving mersenne primes, but
Here's from da wiki
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_number
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
Oops, a certain text attribute failed to post correctly.
The formula is 2 to the p-1 power times ((2 to the p power) -1); or
2**(p-1) x ((2**p)-1).

whew! Thanks!
I couldn't make out what was going on without those!
so you're saying 8,386,560 would be one of these
so how does this work? The factors to get there are 2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*3*3*5*7*13. Do you also add in all of those 4s? All of those 8? etc?
(if I did this right. 2 to the 11th times (2 to the 12th...minus 1))
I think that factors only get to be used once, but the key is
that we aren't talking the repeat of any factor. The factors of 12 are 1, 2,6,3, 4 and12, but we don't count the number itself (12). We don't reduce them to 2x2x3 or 3x2x2. Similarly, for 24, we get 1,2,3,4,6,8,12, and 24 and toss out the 24. Alternatively, we define a perfect number as the sum of *all* of its factors, including itself, over 2.
The p in the formula is the same for all terms, for example 2**(p−1)(2**(p) − 1) using 11 for p would be 2**(11-1)((2**11)-1), or (2**10)((2**11)-1)
You'll note that perfect numbers will all include 1 as a factor, which is a pain.
Mersenne primes are primes that are one less than a power of two, like 3 (one less than 4) or 7 (one less than 8). They take the form (2**n)-1, but not all numbers of that form are primes: (2**4) - 1 = 15, which is not prime, but is a mersenne number.
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
Another attempt at clarification -
1) compute the result of the formula
2) independently find all factors of the result
3) add the latter excepting the result itself, sum should be result.
Example, computation results in 496 (3rd perfect #)
Factor: 496 = 2 * 248, 4 * 124, 8 * 62, 16 * 31, 1 * 496
add factors: 2+248+4+124+8+62+16+31+1 = 496
tadaaa!
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
Mandela, what an amazing history. What could we
learn from him that would help us now? South Africa is modern in many ways, but still facing huge income inequality generated problems which surely are daunting. One anecdote we were told that schools are being burned with the thinking 'if you won't build us schools you can't have them either.' but who knows.
We were in camping Kruger in SA again for little over a month. Historic drought is ongoing. Lions are doing well, but hippos, not so much. Grass is grazed down to nothing.
We went from sighting around 50 lions last year to over a 100 this year.
A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.
Not good about the hippos, but thanx for the update.

The On this Day In: section makes me think this was a really bad day in. I liked the XTC songnever heard their early work. They are one of my favorite bands from the 80's. Some people don't like the big hair era with the peep peep synthesizer pop tunes but i loved it musically. I like the arty fringe ones and sometimes the top forty songs. Maybe it was because I was going to art school and then working as a for hire art wrist and had a Walkman on my head for the entire decade. I could not abide Disco but even a few disco hits I liked.
From my singles 45 collection...
