What are your favorite Podcasts? Here are some of the internet's best. Please share your favorites with us.
Of course, what is "best" is highly subjective, but here are some of those that I listen to regularly.
Most of those that I list will be decidedly apolitical or at least not predominately politically focused. The reason for this is I tend to mostly listen to podcasts when doing mindless tasks such as yard work or when working in my shop, basically times when I want to relax, something that anyone who regularly delves into our political process can all agree is the opposite of relaxing.
Ok, so here it goes in no particular order.
Weird Medicine with Doctor Steve - This is an excellent choice for those who are into all things medical or have questions that they may not be comfortable asking friends or even their doctor about. Be advised, this podcast frequently delves into completely NSFW topics, so I suggest headphones in mixed company. (which also may come with the hazard of people seeing you laugh really hard for no apparent reason at random times)
I recommend this one highly and suggest you start with an episode or two that are on subjects that you think you may be interested in but don't be afraid to jump all the way back to their very first unpolished episode as they are not generally time sensitive subjects and there are a lot of inside jokes and references that make the show even more enjoyable that you will otherwise miss out on.
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History - Dan is a remarkable story teller and "amateur" historian (I know history professors that have less broad of a grasp of history than this gentleman) who weaves together a rich tapestry of detailed information and personal anecdotes from the letters and papers of those involved, from the most powerful of generals to his lowest ranking foot soldier giving you multiple perspectives of the subject being discussed.
I particularly enjoyed his insanely in-depth exploration of WW I "Blueprint For Armageddon". (This is not a "one sitting" type of show, for example the one referenced is 6 parts averaging around 200+ minutes per part if I recall.)
How to do Everything - The title pretty much says it all. Want to learn how to do something even if it is something that you didn't even know existed ? than this one is probably for you.
Radiolab - Radiolab is for those that have a deep curiosity about a wide range of subjects. Science, Religion, Philosophy, etc. If you are interested in something it was quite likely talked about here.
The Infinite Monkey Cage This one is brought to us by the folks over at the BBC. They cover a wide variety of subjects, everything from Race to the Science of Dr. Who. (They tend to be more of a Science based podcast but to delve into other areas quite frequently.)
Welcome to the Night Vale - Ever listen to those Ol' Time radio shows? You know, the ones from before T.V.? If you liked them, or never gave them a shot than this one might be a great one to explore.
It is a twice-monthly podcast in the style of community updates for the fictitious small desert town of Night Vale, featuring local weather, news, announcements from the Sheriff's Secret Police, mysterious lights in the night sky, dark hooded figures with unknowable powers, and cultural events.
The Skeptics guide to the Universe - This is another great Science based podcast covering a wide range of subjects. I am particularly fond of their "Science or Fiction" segment at the end of most episodes as well as their "Dumbest thing of the week" segments.
The Joe Rogan Experience - You may remember Joe, he is a stand up comedian, former host of Fear Factor and current UFC fight caller. His podcast is very eclectic covering a wide range of subjects and with many amazing guests. I never cease to be amazed at the quantity and quality of those he has on his show and the diversity. How many shows will have 2+ hour long interviews with "wacky" conspiracy guys like David Icke one episode, Sam Harris the following and then Neil Degrasse Tyson the next? It really is surreal. It really is amazing the amount of information that he pulls out of guests over a long period of unscripted conversation. He makes no effort to keep things "on the rails" and therefor the conversations tend to stray into areas that you normally don't get to hear from these guys on the 15 second sound bite circuit.
Longform - Sponsored by the Writing Program at the Unv. of Pittsburgh this is a tough one to describe, it doesn't really fit into a particular genre or theme as it is composed of a huge variety of contributors. Maybe like a verbal version of an Essay here?
Vos and Bonnie's 'My Wife Hates Me' - Join Stand up comedians Rich Vos and Bonnie McFarlane as they discuss life, love and abuse the ever-loving hell out of each other. They have to have one of the weirdest relationship dynamics ever, that is unless you are me and my friends, who seem to operate under the, "You know how much we like you by how much shit we give you" school of thought. (We are an odd group though and will say the most 'hateful' stuff imaginable to each other when face to face but talk nice about each other when not around, kinda the opposite of the norm. )
Mad Scientist Party Hour - This is a group of geeky comedian/science types that is not fit for consumption by most people so obviously it was a good fit for me. Low Class, low brow entertainment with just a touch of smart.
Penn's Sunday School - Join Atheist Comedian/Magician Penn Gillette and his guests while they discuss a broad range of topics. I have been a big fan of Penn and Teller for decades, and while Teller doesn't join him on the podcast (for obvious reasons) the mix of guests and topics is pretty awesome.
Well, while not all of them that I listen to this is a pretty good start.
I highly recommend finding a podcast conglomeration app such as BeyondPod to make it easier to listen to and manage your episodes. I love how it allows me to stop one and go to another if the mood fits me and then resume back at the first right where I left off without having to have sticky tabs with episode numbers and timestamps on it like in the early days. It is available for free, but was so awesome that my cheap ass actually paid for the full version to help support the authors.
What are some of your favorites? Do you currently listen to any of those I listed? If so, what are your thoughts/opinions.
I look forward to hearing your suggestions, this medium is so new still that the only real way to find out about new podcasts currently that might interest one is via recommendations from friends so what better place to ask then here with my C99Peeps!

I haven't explored podcasts, but these do sound interesting!
A possible alternative for when I'm walking or doing chores.

Podcasts are the Perfect "For Chores" invention!
Give it a try sometime, I bet you will be amazed at how much easier it makes things like that fly by.
Oh and for long drives, I love putting one on when I am doing a long drive. You know it is making the time pass when you spend 2 hours cooped up in the car driving to your destination and then end up sitting in it for 15 more minutes so you can finish that last episode.

Absolutely!
I like to listen to "Wait, wait don't tell me" while I do the laundry.

Sorry brother...
ludite here. I've just learned this year to get my news from the internet. Democracy Now is one of my faves and I think it offers a pod cast.
Do you use pod casts rather than your radio? I lost faith in NPR in the last couple of years and still don't have a good replacement. May be an mp3 player/recorder would be the answer.
Here's a UK take on the best podcasts

“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Democracy now does have a podcast.
I mowed my yard listening to it. Amy Goddman harks back to the days of real journalism and is so good!
I do have that one in my playlist and it's pretty good too.
I just had so many in my queue that I decided to skip over the political ones but thanks for bringing it up, it is certainly worth the listen that is for sure.

Wow, only 2 of the ones I listen to are in that list, I will
have to check some of those others out as I am not familiar with them at all.
Thanks for the link!

Do you have a smart phone?
You can listen to podcasts on that too. WNYC is probably the best for a good variety of podcasts. While I don't get my "news" anymore from NPR, they have some other great programming. From science, story telling, food shows, and I still love to listen to Terry Gross. Just download their app on your phone and select whatever podcast you like.

Yep I don't listen to radio anymore.
and the podcast apps like BeyondPod for your phone or other mobile devices make it incredibly easy to use them wherever you may be. (You can download the episodes for off line listening so you don't use up all your mobile data.)
The big kicker was when I got a car that was Bluetooth enabled. Now, as soon as I get in the car my podcast resumes right from where I was last listening with the touch of a single button on the steering wheel. It doesn't get much easier than that.

I have little
interest in podcasts. I've listened to a few, but I find I require visual input to really appreciate people just sitting around talking. I need the non-verbal cues, the expressions, the hand gestures, the eyes. No matter how interesting the subject, I end up being bored to tears without those.
Internet "radio" is where I'm at. Music is a driving force in my life and I can find damn near anything I care to listen to. That and a good collection of CDs and cassette tapes keep me going. And when I inherit my dad's hi-fi system, I'll be able to pull my vinyl out of storage. Happy days!
The more people I meet, the more I love my cats.
I can't just sit around and listen to something either, that's
why I might use them for walking or driving or chores. Most of that is quiet time right now, but there's only so much quiet time a person needs.

Actually several of the podcasts now have a visual element too
And more are adding it all the time. Podcast's are gonna be the thing that finally kills Cable.
JRE for example can be watched on youtube or listen only to the audio in your app if you are in a situation where you have other stuff occupying you preventing you from being able to focus on a video.
But yeah, it's not for everyone. I kinda liken them to Books on tape, while I prefer to actually read a book, prior to podcasts I always used to pick up a couple of those for any really long drive. (For some time I had a 2+ hour commute each way to work every day on 12 hour shifts so I needed something to keep my mind moving on those dark straight desert roads so I didn't fall asleep.)

The one of yours that interests me most is The Joe Rogan experience. I'll check it out, and some of the others.
The Moth
People telling stories about themselves, something they've done, that happened in their lives, live, on stage, no notes, no teleprompters.
Each story is usually only about 15 minutes long, and a podcast episode may have 2, 3, or 4 stories on it.
I like interviews. The Axe Files - David Axelrod interviewing people, I thought had promise, but he hasn't interviewed anyone I wanted to hear about for months. I loved his interview with Jorge Ramos, but that has been awhile back.
Another interview podcast that has potential is Alec Baldwin's "Here's The Thing." Probably sounds shallow, but his interview with Jimmy Fallon was really good. Interesting to find out about how he got his start in show business, where he started from - - nowhere. A very entertaining conversation between Jimmy and Alec.
Alec's interview with Herb Alpert (Tijuana Brass) was fantastic.!!
Again, though, as with The Axe Files, now Alec hasn't interviewed anyone I've wanted to hear from for awhile.
I check both of them routinely though in case a name pops up that sounds interesting. These are all on i-Tunes, free. They probably also have web sites where they can be downloaded.
I listen to Bill Maher's show on podcast every week since I don't have HBO.
Thank you for some new ideas!
Love the Moth!
I also like to listen to Selected Shorts. A wonderful variety of contemporary and classic short non fiction stories read by well known artists. I've listened to stories by Jhumpa LaHiri, Alice Monroe, Dorothy Parker, and Edith Wharton (Christina Pickles did a Wharton story called "Xingu" that was hilarious!). Simply marvelous!

Thanks, zoebear,
I'll check that out.
Love the podcasts
A second for Nightvale and Democracy Now. Also, in no particular order-A moment of Clarity- Lee Camps podcast, The Bradcast, news and politics, Our Hen House for vegan and animal rights folk, Law and Disorder by Center for Constitutional Rights. Kpfa has a slew of good podcasts including Herbal Highway, Visionary Activist and Economic Update by Richard Wolff.
If you like tales of high strangeness there is Beyond the Edge, Arcane Radio and Paracast.
If you are pulling your hair out after the political podcasts there is Meditation Oasis , though not updated for a long while, and Anxiety Slayers.
And yes, I spend a lot of time listening to podcasts, lol.
Thanks for posting this. I've never listened to a podcast
and I don't even really know what the term means or how to locate them, etc. but this has motivated me to learn because a lot of these sound very interesting! I loved Penn and Teller's Bullshit - didn't know they/he have this show or whatever you call it. Podcast... what's a pod? ... lol. Oh well, time to learn something new and that's always good. Thanks again Alphalop and everyone for the suggestions. We don't have TV anymore, I get pretty much all my news and information online now, so it's great of find other avenues for quality information as well as entertainment.
If you have a smart phone just go to Itunes or google play
and download BeyondPod. (It's my current favorite, but it works so well that i haven't tried out any others for years so there may be better ones out there.)
That is about the easiest way, then you can just search for the name of the podcast within the app and odds are it will find them (or you can browse by category as well.)
Or if you want to just dip your feet in with your PC all the links I provided take you to the sites where you can listen to their podcasts.
If you enjoy any of them let me know, I would love to hear your opinion.
"I used to vote Republican & Democrat, I also used to shit my pants. Eventually I got smart enough to stop doing both things." -Me
I download to an ipod.
Then plug it into a little speaker (about 3 inches tall), that I can carry around the house, or leave the house with, or put on the nightstand at bedtime.
That used to be my technique too!
I have like 3 of these little cases that have a zipper that you open to place the ipod inside and plug in as well as to access the batteries and then a little carbiner clip to attach to a belt loop or whatnot.
Then when I finally got a Bluetooth phone I got a Bluetooth headset to go with it and freedom it gives is great! I can plug in the phone in the kitchen which is pretty central and then go about my chores with the headset on and no wires!
Also useful because I couldn't hear the speaker over the lawnmower without really blasting it loud and some of those podcasts? Well, lets just say I live across the street from a middle school playground and wouldn't feel they are appropriate for children, or even most adults in some cases, lol! ( I listen to several stand up comedians podcasts and their language, and subject matter can tend towards the blue side of the spectrum at times.)

Yes, I am still pretty low tech. :)
I don't have a smart phone, or even a cell phone. It works for me though. I've been thinking I should get another little speaker. It was inexpensive and probably won't last forever. I use it so often, I want to have a backup on hand in case it goes out.
There are still lots of "Low Tech" options on the market so I
wouldn't worry about it too much.
They are getting pretty cheap too. Here is one example from Amazon that has pretty solid reviews.

Oh, cool. Thanks.
Similar to mine, but cuter.
Looks like it has a longer playback time on a charge too. Maybe I'll get one for my backup.
Oh, I forgot to answer your question about the name Podcast
It is an abbreviation of their first manifestation as iPod broadCasts.
"I used to vote Republican & Democrat, I also used to shit my pants. Eventually I got smart enough to stop doing both things." -Me
Had to laugh at
"What's a pod?" Makes ya think Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
There is no such thing as TMI. It can always be held in reserve for extortion.
I take my laptop to the kitchen @6pm et, turn on TYT and make
dinner to the tune of Cenk and the gang. Does that count?
Close enough, yep. :)
Very little difference between TYT and some of the "Higher end" podcasts as far as production value goes, and more of them are getting better every day as the cost of good quality A/V production equipment and software gets cheaper and cheaper.
