In 1939 MGM made a movie called "Idiot's Delight". You might have seen it. We never had until last night. It's Europe on the brink of war. Hollywood's designated "peacenik actor", Burgess Meredith, delivers this line:

I wish I could find a clip of this but apparently, true to the above quote, the world is more interested in seeing Clark Gable dance than Burgess Meredith go on an anti-war rant. ok, so let's see...what's in the news? We've got the Republican debate coming up tonight. It'll be an exercise in how, finally, they have no sense of decency (a hat tip to Joseph Welch) as they compete to see who can say the most offensive thing. Meanwhile, as discussed here and other places, the Democratic leadership doesn't want any debates. I guess we've all read O'Malley's take on it:

Who is Holly Shulman? According to CNN she is a former Obama campaign spokeswoman who is now the national press secretary for the DNC.
Her forte seems to be throwing out weird responses that don't actually deal with the issue. A few months ago, when the Hillary email stuff started Shulman said this:

It is surprising at the very least just how silent these same Republicans have been about members of their own party who have used their own private servers, conducted office business on private email accounts, have stonewalled open record requests, have routinely deleted official emails, and more.
I bet I can name some people who think that's appropriate. None of them are here at caucus99. Yes, I've gone "over there" and the usuals think it's just grand.

Is there a reason I should I give Jan Fleischhauer more credence than Ulfkotte, who did work at the FAZ for decades, after all.
Der Spiegel might have been genuinely "left" back in the days when Franz Josef Strauss was defense minister and had publisher Rudolf Augstein jailed, but by now it's a predictable gatekeeper for the Establishment. Kind of like the New York Times or the Washington Post — and nowadays that is definitely not a compliment.
Jan Fleischhauer's / Der Spiegel's word and motives — beyond doubt? Couldn't this just be insiders helping insiders circle the wagons? "Frivolous alarmist and self promoter just trying to sell books" was a typical accusation at That Other Forum when centrists wanted to see writers like David Sirota, David Swanson, or Cenk Uygur driven away.
I heard this arguement before

If you can read German, may be you read an article of one of our best weekly newspapers "Die Zeit" (usually doesn't publish articles that dumb you down or engage in biting agitation).

I remember having read several different German papers with regards to his book and article. As always Der Spiegel is the most smug. I don't like that either, but it doesn't mean that the quintessence of the article is way off or wrong.
Your comparisons might be correct, but I doubt they really fit. The "other site" is not at all comparable to "Der Spiegel" or any of the other German newspapers (Die Zeit, Die Sueddeutsche or Frankfurter Allgemeine). I haven't read enough of the other authors to know them well and I haven't any idea how "smug" Ulfkotte really was. I can't judge that.
There are many ways you can create a spectacle. Ulfkotte created one skillfully. He was a perfect gatekeeper for the establishment for decades. Now he is not the same anymore? Why should I have trust in that? I don't like spectacles. He had plenty of time in his life to consider writing for another news paper than the FAZ. He did not choose that option. So, why not?

consider reliably telling something truthfully, without propaganda or biting sensationalism, of which the "left" is as capable of as the "right".

Now, just because someone's whole career has been on the political Right doesn't automatically mean they're lying about, or have political motives for slamming, Ulfkotte and his book.
Still: yes indeed, you have to know where someone is coming from.
Der Spiegel has a smorgasbord of writers
for their opinion pieces (nine right now). I read them not too often, because the ones I read are pretty awful sometimes. I also don't deny that somewhat "Der Spiegel" has some overly smug people. Nevertheless you show me a print media in Germany that is more "leftist, while trying to stay truthfull" than Der Spiegel. Jan Fleischhauer is one of a younger crew over there, that is supposed to write "inciting" opinion pieces. They are a new generation. There is even a writer over there now I know personally and other than that they are smug, I don't see why he is good. But they are not bad either. They do their research and do their jobs. You don't have to read opinion pieces. You can stick to articles that rather report more factual stuff.
So, whatever. I simply don't have trust in people, who have one set of political povs for twenty to thirty years and sell them proudly to the most conservative (and right-wing newspaper FAZ for years) and then change from one night to the other to tell you the opposite. Nope. Ulfkotte was a smart guy of that kind of person, imo, and I don't consider him a victim. May be I have gotten him wrong. If so, I apologize.
In the end I don't care either. Neither for Fleischhauer, nor for Ulfkotte. Way too sensationalistic to be considered seriously.
Der Spiegel didn't have a "right-wing residential voice" before they started their online English edition. They have them now, it changed when they started online and had some sort of co-operation with the NYT. But I don't know enough about it. I remember vaguely to have read about that years ago.

You're doing fine. For me as a non-German living in Germany it's very valuable to read anything you have to say.
It's equally possible that I'm wrong … A lot of my knowledge is spotty and anecdotal. Also, perhaps I tend more than is healthy to favor outliers, the solo voice different from what the flock is saying.
In fact, I don't even especially like my own tone of voice above — I re-read my own comments and think, oh, there I go again with that stinky "gotcha" or "know it all" attitude.

you live in Germany. Sorry for that. Of course you have a much more reliable pov as you can witness everything on location and live and read regularly all the papers. I would need so much to make the journey back there, but at the moment am just not mentally, financially and intellectually able to confront 'my German home country and its people' yet. I have never been to Dresden, I have never been back after the Wall came down other than visiting my village I grew up in and visiting the remainders of my family. I imagine going back and not being able to handle that "grass grew over everything" I still remember in my mind.

By comparison, when I headed off to college in North America ("the Mainland") a half century ago, the tallest building in Honolulu was still the 14-story Ala Moana Center tower with the revolving restaurant on top.
I first set foot in Frankfurt am Main during Gerald Ford's presidency. The tallest buildings were still the Dom (cathedral) and the HQ of labor union IG Metall. Now Frankfurt has pretensions to be "Mainhattan" (groaner pun on the name of the Main river), with various bank towers running to 100 stories or more.

I drove through Honolulu just a couple of hours and stood overnight. It was highways and traffic and beaches (which were amazing considering how close to the city center they are). Lots of "posh" high-end stores, Gucci and stuff. In DC we have just one area left which features such stores. I haven't bought any clothing or other stuff in those stores for the last 25 years.
I also "know" Hawaii from what our cameramen (ARD German TV) filmed over there. Their images looked like the navy ships parked directly on the streets in front of you. I know nothing about Oahu (yet). I am kind of scared to settle in Hawaii. I hate the fact that to leave it you have to take a plane. I hate crossing the oceans, be it Pacific or Atlantik. Everywhere I had to go, I had cross the oceans. Every move I had to pack for "real shipping". I am so tired of it. Would be nice if I could just drive over to Hawaii, like drive up to Canada or something. Well, yeah, I am tired.
Frankfurt, Hamburg, even Berlin... all the big cities mean nothing to me anymore. Too much, too rich, too glitzy, too busy. But then some things are very convenient. May be I find some nice niches that remind me of the sixties and seventies from back then. President Ford, so you came to Germany, when I graduated from TU in Berlin. Sigh. I better don't think back.

Getting ready to upgrade to Windows 10 Know about all the backdoor spying and that it is a trap to start charging for things that use to be free - like solitaire. However, I think it is inevitable. I can do it now for free or do it later for $200. MS has found a way to make more money off of us, and they won't be stopped.
Has anyone already upgraded? What do you think? If you haven't, why? Do you think you can avoid it? Please don't tell me to buy a Mac. I have three pretty new computers, and I'm not in a hurry to replace them.

My husband installed the upgrade on his laptop the second day it was available. Be prepared because it does take hours to install. His first comment was that it was very invasive but he supposedly disabled some of things that auto link. I have since read that you cannot disable everything. Also it took him a while to find his favorites and when he did, they were in alphabetical order instead of the order he had them.
I have not asked him about anything else because I decided that I would not install it on my computer unless I am forced to do so.

I can assure you Guys of one thing, after decades with the Feds, there is always a 'fair, to considerable lag time' between the public disclosure of government irregularities, and the actual time of the commission of said irregularities.
(A recent excellent example of this--the OPM hacking scandal.)
IOW, one must allow for weeks, if not months, of 'CYA' activity on behalf of government officials.
My point being, Biden and his Camp were surely aware of the soon-to-be announced FBI investigation, before the trial balloon was floated. And, it's hard not to believe that the Dem Party Establishment/Leadership would not be highly concerned about this turn of events.

I have said all along that I thought Clinton would implode. But I thought it would not be due to a scandal, but more to her personality and campaign style. Maybe she is imploding. If so, then the DNC has a safe alternative in Biden (good ole Uncle Joe) which may be another reason why DWS (Ms. Dancing With the Stars, herself) has been holding off on setting the debate dates.

Think I've told you all about taking on Jerry over his statements about 911; so I'll leave that be and ask another question. How many of the Liberty, Bob Jones and other right-wing graduates who were placed in positions all across the government by Bush/Cheney are still in place? Were they ever purged? I don't know. I do recall them having prominent rolls in Iraq and we know how that turned out.

There seems to be a consistency the is pervasive in the banking world. It is a criminal enterprise, like loan sharking. Now the IMF is calling for severe austerity measures for Puerto Rico. And we all know that austerity inflicts its greatest damage on the poorest people. Meanwhile the US stands by and watches one of its colonies collapse while it does nothing. I am not sure of what the solution is, but destroying peoples' lives to satisfy crooked bankers certainly should not be a choice.

the line is clearly drawn. FSC backers don't mind only 6 debates, Non-FSC backers think more is necessary. Funny enough, the authoritarians can't see that others get the logic involved. Their support of Clinton and few debates only proves (to me, at least) that they know that few debates helps Clinton and is therefore unfair to the field.
I've learned today that 6 is a good number for debates but debates are stupid and probably shouldn't be held at all. I've also learned about the exclusivity thing, where any Dem candidates who make joint appearances without DNC permission are non-persons, ineligible for any further Dem debates (should any be held). But that's ok with the Hillary people.
Also, that Debbie Wasserman-Schultz did such a good job in 2014

I think its good that they are concentrating on "low-income" users but let's not forget the irony here. Low income people have the smallest carbon footprints, as a rule. It's the numbers that will count here and it will pit those numbers against people who overuse their cars and people who use them on motorsports tracks. But it's a start and it's a good idea. Maybe the rich will catch on, someday... soon...

Actually, I'm putting my money on a less bombastic Trump. Mr M says that Trump's a grad of The Wharton School, (very big in FIRE circles), and he figures that he can put two words together in a measured manner, if he really wants to.
(Which is not to say that we would agree with his putrid ideology--just that we think that he might attempt to present himself as a serious contender to the nomination. OTOH, he might 'go off.' That's why were're looking forward to it--the suspense, LOL!)
From what I've heard from some of the national reporters on XM, Trump "knows where the bodies are buried"--like many in The One Percent. That's really what has the Washington Political Class/Elites frightened out of their minds.
Plan to check back in here, after the Debate(s). I'm really hoping that Wallace tackles "entitlement reform." (My guess is that he will, since he doesn't normally shy away from it on his Sunday show.)

Okay, so I am old
I saw the Rolling Stones in 1965 at Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater, Florida. Everyone I knew was into the Beatles, but I was into the Stones. A very popular and well known local group, Vic Waters and the Impacs opened for them.
Do I hear the sound of guillotines being constructed?

Old here too. Saw the Stones in Honolulu in 1963.
They played HIC Auditorium (now called Blaisdell Center).
Also saw the Beach Boys perform there. Actually, I preferred them to the Stones. Denny Wilson broke a drumstick and a piece flew into my lap.
