The Weekly Watch

Lots of Moving Parts

Open Thread Image.jpg

It's difficult to keep up to date in the rapid news cycle these days....from assassination to withdrawals, congress cheering for genocide, Yemen and Israel trading attacks, the EU preventing peace in Ukraine as Ukraine targets EU members, Hungry and Slovakia... while China is uniting the Palestinians, and Russia is working toward peace between Syria and Türkiye. Whatta world. Round and round, faster and faster...

The Sue Mi Terry case is bizarre

Particularly in the context of think tank, foreign lobbies, and other foreign influence peddling that is a constant in DC. Terry did not consistently push the South Korean government line. She was anti-Moon Jae-in, pro-US policy, pro-Japan etc. Whatever the blob view was on the situation or policy in Korea, that's what she advocated. It was very similar to the VOA Korea line and that of other conservative American "experts" on Korean affairs.

Is the Trump campaign about to screw up a slam dunk?

Just a few weeks ago it looked like the Dems were about to get blown out. Biden was an old man who refused to give up the keys to the car, and you even heard some Dems talk about being resigned to four more year of Trump. Trump was also on a winning streak for getting his court cases delayed.
And this was before Trump's assassination attempt, which I must admit that Trump reacted much better than I expected.

Album of the Week 7-27-24

Afternoon folks!

There's some great ear-treats this week. Starting off, there's an album from Albert King and an album with 60's era Chicago blues recordings of James Cotton, Otis Rush and Homesick James. From there, you can boogie with Canned Heat, rock with the MC5 and then mellow out a bit with Bonnie Raitt. Coming into the home stretch, there's a Jorma Kaukonen album of country bluesish tunes and finishing up in the diversity department, there's an album by German prog-rockers Triumvirat.

Enjoy the tunes and have a great weekend!

Saturday Open Thread - 7/27/24: Odds and Ends

Good morning! I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend unfolding!

Yesterday was deer day. As soon as I got home from work, I saw a buck slowly galloping alongside my yard fence. He didn't speed up because of me. He was the one that stared me down last week. A few hours later, we spied a doe and her fawn had joined him. Our first sighting of the fawn.

Now, I love deer. And elk, antelope, etc., not for food, but for viewing pleasure. Nevertheless, if Mr. Gates et. al., kill off farting cows to save the climate, will we turn toward eating Bambi?

All at once, I had an anxiety attack. Do deer fart? See for yourself.

Friday Night Photos Grapes Of Wrath Edition

Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.

I didn't get out with the camera this week. These photos are from a visit to the Bernardo Winery eight years ago.

Bernardo winery, located in the Rancho Bernardo community of San Diego, has been in continuous operation since it was founded in 1889. Since it made sacramental wine for the Catholic church it has the distinction of being one of the few producers of alcohol that was allowed to continue production during prohibition. Along with the wine tasting room, the winery also has an Italian restaurant, gift shops and antiques up the wazoo.
