Open Thread 7-28-23 - Getting Away

Work, pressure, finding both relief and release...

We are back in the Texas Hill Country. I had the 27th and 28th clear from court, so we got gone!

I have friends who travel the world, or to a place as little as 50 miles away, to just get away from their daily grind.

Now, you can get away by turning off your TV, your NPR radio broadcast, and breaking up with that lover/spouse who turns out to be a test in your anger management course. (Most of my divorce cases fall into that category.)

We need a break from the pervasive propaganda, the demands, and laws that constantly control our behavior.

I had a curious conversation at the Oregon Country Fair

-- there was a woman there who had some sort of carbon tax proposal. I explained to her that, instead of trying to mitigate climate change while leaving everything else about society the same, we should ask ourselves what kind of society would be able to mitigate climate change, and then we should ask ourselves what we would have to do to get that kind of society.

Open Thread - Thurs 27 July 2023: Plennie Wingo... Who?

Plennie Wingo - Who's That?

I was reading an article by Matt Taibbi the other day, and he mentioned someone I'd never heard of. The person's name, alone, was intriguing - Plennie Wingo. Who the heck was Plennie Wingo? Maybe you know if you are from Texas, or like 'modern' history, or the Guinness Book of World Records, or listen to Dave Anthony podcasts ( Plennie Wingo | The Dollop Episode #493!)... but, I don't fit super well in any of those categories but the history one, so I didn't know who Plennie Wingo was.

Stroke Took Place One Year Ago Today

I first noticed that something was amiss when I got out of the shower and looked in the mirror -- my face was beet red and my eyes were as big and round as silver dollars. The least disruptive part of the experience is that there has never been so much as a hint of physical pain. I did not know it was a stroke for two days as I inexplicably kept bumping into immovable objects. While driving, I found my car rolling on the left side of the road.
