The thermite of globalization has been cutting the structural steel of First World democracies since the 1970s (see the quote at end). The economic crash of 2008 was a blow an airliner impact that rattled all nations, but did not quite knock them down - except for the PIIGS victims of bankster fraud. However, 2008 began the trash fires of racism and anti-immigrant agitation.
Just a short hit of potentially good news. After the emergency response comes the rebuilding.
Islands usually get their electricity from diesel (bunker diesel if memory serves, the cheapest and dirtiest grade) generators. Solar is a much better option, and once installed they no longer need to buy and import that fuel.
The obvious question is how to pay for it. A less obvious question is how to harden it against powerful storms. Still, it's a start.
The GOP has a Trump/Puerto Rico problem, and it will cost them plenty in coming elections.

Think about this week alone...from the proposed tax plan that is a give away to the wealthy...to the vultures taking advantage of the destruction of Puerto Rico...to the failed T-rumpcare designed for profit and tax relief..to the privilege of the oligarchs chartering planes at tax payer expense for convenience. Yes it is obvious the system is failing.

In Wisconsin the Kenosha Unified School District is having a tough time digesting their loss at the US Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit in the case of high school senior Ash Whitaker.
Puerto Rico filed for bankruptcy today on about $73 Billion of debt. This is more than seven times the size of the previous record municipal bankruptcy, Detroit.
Puerto Rico doesn't have access to Chapter 9, like most municipalities.
