Peter Rowan

Album of the Week 12-20-25

Afternoon folks!

There's some awesome blues music here this week. Starting off is Big Mama Thornton with the Muddy Waters Blues Band in 1966, a really great album, followed by Junior Wells a few years later accompanied by Buddy Guy, Otis Spann and a bunch of other Chicago blues luminaries. After that is an EP that I picked up years ago from a cutout bin of some of Jimmy McCracklin's early hits on Chess records. Following that is James Harman, a fine harmonica player and we finish up with some bluegrass with Peter Rowan - great stuff!

Enjoy the tunes and have a great weekend!

Album of the week 8-23-25

Afternoon folks!

It's another interesting week with three kinds of blues for you. Starting off, there's Texas Telecaster Master, Albert Collins playing live in 1973 at the El Mocambo club. Then there's an album from blues organist Jesse "Wild Bill" Austin with the Blues Brothers horns and after that is an album of acoustic country blues from Scrapper Blackwell. Moving on, in the folk-rock-blues vein we have The Band concerts from which the Rock of Ages live album was culled. We finish off in the Bluegrass department with an album from Tony Rice and Peter Rowan.

Enjoy the tunes and have a great weekend!

Album of the Week 2-8-25

Afternoon folks!

Ready? Here we go. Starting out we've got a compilation of Rufus Thomas' r&b hits, followed by albums from Jimmy Rushing and Mose Allison in the jazz/blues vein. After that there's an album of Chicago blues from the Siegel-Schwall Band. Moving on to the musical diversity section there's a double album from a band that I've been seeing at festivals and a couple of nearby gigs that features an incredible younger guitarist and band with strong hints of the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead in their playing, Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country - it's worth a listen. Finishing up we've got some serious bluegrass from Peter Rowan.

Just as a reminder, if youtube is still screwed up and the full album embed only plays the first song, click the "on youtube" link to listen to the full album.

Album of the Week - 5-7-22

Afternoon folks!

This week I have a whole bunch of blues for you guys. Albums by Hubert Sumlin with James Cotton, Freddie King, also compilation albums featuring Earl Hooker and Magic Sam, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Eric Clapton with Powerhouse and The Lovin' Spoonful among others. There's an album by Taste, which was Rory Gallagher's band early on in his career and rounding out the week, there's a non-blues album by Peter Rowan with some of his best tunes on it.

Enjoy!
