Over the years, have designed many structures and pieces of furniture to meet our needs of
shelter and comfort. Having the necessary skills, tools and workshop have allowed this process
to evolve to our advantage saving a ton of money along the way. The trade-off is loss of
functionality of the back and various major joints. Believe it was worth it, all things considered.
My aesthetic tends to run along simplicity. Shaker, Amish and Colonial blends-in with the locale.
Pine, popular and chestnut are plentiful in this region so those are woods of choice.
Red oak for heating and white cedar for siding.
This is mostly a hobby. Can not fathom trying to make money by dovetailing drawer fronts, laminating-up maple counters and the like. Have already maxed-out usefulness of power tools.
This is not a production enterprise. Mostly self taught so know my limitations in this regard.

Good morning...
We designed and built our home, barn, cisterns with decks, and camp house. I like building because at the end of the day you can see what you did. Quite the contrast with teaching where you have no idea what seeds you may have planted.
I have no particular style other than as functional and as inexpensive as possible. House and barn are pole buildings.
Designing our roads have been an evolving process. We first used chert from a pit on our property. Later as we could afford it we began adding gravel (crusher run). Now we're topping with reground asphalt and slowly working our way around our 1.5-2 miles of road.
Then there's garden and landscape design. In fact the more you think about the more design we all have in our lives.

history and viewpoint. Design may or may not precede the build. I've done a lot of "designing" from databases, record keeping systems, "and such to furniture, furnishings (not the same thing, gardens and the like. A lot of it has been somewhat ad hoc. I like simple with perhaps a hint of moderne, but mostly practice and settle for what one might call "shade tree", as in "shade tree mechanic". Output is, after all constrained not only by inputs but by resources available , including time. Preferred materials vary, but, in practice run very much in favor of scrap, leftovers, and se-use/conversion. Seriously utilitarian except for furnishings and furniture.

Ad Hoc and shade tree
are good descriptors of my design style as well.
I can build almost anything, but unless there is a specific
item I need, there is existent materials and artistic tendencies.
It is fun to drink the creative juices and see what develops.
Playing now with wood/copper sculptures with no basic purpose
beyond sheer expression.

interesting pieces of Madroño aka Madrone. I found that I could always cut or carve a circular depression on the verey top and call them candle holders for gifting.

The only designing I have done is selecting picture frames, matting, and so forth, for art work. I take the art to a Michael's store and work with someone there who puts it all together for the finishing. Lots of choice, lots of fun. Lots of money, too.
The art I have collected around the world is basically an art gallery at this point. It was always fun to describe the art by location and content, especially to kids.
I wonder if Trump will announce something both crazy and dangerous at the UN today. It will be designed by Bibi.
