Friday Photography - A Tree Fern in Spring
Submitted by janis b on Fri, 11/22/2019 - 5:44pm
It was love at first sight for me when I first met tree ferns. I lived with them in the mountains of Kauai, and to me they were pure magic. Watching the fronds move gracefully in the gentle mountain breezes always made me wonder whether this natural beauty was what inspired the Hula. Learning that many of the tree ferns came from New Zealand was what first peaked my interest in the country. I now happily live in what I call, the land of the tree ferns.
I wish you all a good Friday evening. I will be busy with other stuff, but will check back in at times. Enjoy.

Tree ferns,
must agree they are so beautiful and the description of them swaying in the breeze sums up their beauty to me. Always enjoyed time among them when in New Zealand and other places they grew in abundance.
Life is what you make it, so make it something worthwhile.
This ain't no dress rehearsal!

… and do.
I'm happy that you've had that experience. I know divineorder spoke of NZ a few times, but I don’t remember about what specifically. I remember that he said how much you both enjoyed it, and that it was quite a long time ago. I often think about how lucky it was to have had the opportunity to experience different places in a more pristine state. I hope you are faring well.
Thanks for Friday Photos tonight, Janis
Tree ferns as hula skirt. After looking at your photo I can definitely picture that in my minds eye.
Some little critters found among the plants and flowers.

If that’s a Katydid, then I’ll be seeing its brothers and sisters very soon around here.
The spider web pattern at the bottom of the photo is beautiful. I wonder if that weaving will appear all around the centre, or if it is built like that to create a strong connection between the web and its external support. It’s amazing how strong something so fragile can be.
The first three shots
are a Praying Mantis. I can't remember the last time I've seen a Katydid here in the San Diego area.
The Orb Weaver spider has been building it's web in the same area of my friends garden for the last few months. Sometimes it has the heavy zigzag weaving like you see here, sometimes not.

Isn't nature exciting
in all its mysteriousness. Thank you for observing it for us.
beautiful photos SP!

The dwelling of some local inhabitants:

Hi Bollox, you're welcome.
That's quite an inviting island dwelling. If I were a bird I wouldn't mind living there for some time.
Fred, as always so photogenic. I really enjoy how your portraits of him reflect both your quirky characters ; ).
With all those ferns
I half expect to see a tyrannosaur come crashing through the undergrowth in your shots.
Also, too, the inhabitants of the 'island' are long-toothed.....
Gëzuar!!

That's exactly what you would have seen
however many millenniums ago.
Those beavers have a long way to go if they're building a dam, damn! Or is that where they nest?
That's just the lodge
They do a good 'Full English' breakfast.

Do they do Airbnbs?
Thanks for the laughs Bollox.
Nice beaver lodge BR!

Does that lodge
meet local building codes?

Depends
on whether you are a beaver or not ; ).
Love yer fern Janis!
Beautiful photo Janis! I think the Pacific Northwest has some giant ferns in that rainforest (as at Olympia N.F.). I never made it up there...
How bout some flowers?
Clammyweed, the fine long red parts barely show unfortunately. It drips with nectar.
Fireweed, Lobelia cardinalis, always grows with roots in water, streamside generally.
Palafoxia
Antelope Horn - a Milkweed the Monarch uses. There are 11 butterflies on this one head. Most are Olive-Juniper Hairstreak, save one Reakirt's Blue and one Gray Hairstreak.
Annual Pennyroyal
Lemon Beebalm aka Purple Horsemint
Thanks all for all the great stuff all over the site all the time...

Oh, and
yes, the Olympic Rain Forest is definitely fern covered. I will post a copy of an old b&w photo of the forest floor there next week.
Marvelous tree fern, janis,
gives me pleasure and reminds me of the abundant varieties of ferns creating a womb atmosphere in the old growth forests here high in the Appalachians. When possible, i grow them in my windowsill.
To ferns of all varieties,
growing in ancient forests and windowsills!
Thanks smiley
My usual weekly stopping by.
Always appreciated......never disappointed. :-).
