The first question in the title isn’t all that difficult to suss out. The weft in both men’s narrative tapestry was that neither was beholden to Big Money, one because he was too rich to be bought off and the other because he was too ethical. One touted using his own money and the other touted using only small donor money.
I would like to mention that I had an uncle who was an academy award winning screenwriter whose career was ended by the HUAC, the House Unamerican Activities Committee. So, from family legend, we are quite aware that "advocating the overthrow of the USA government" is illegal and in modern times, even if one lives on the opposite side of the world from Washington, DC, the results for advocating such a thing can get you, and your children and grandchildren massacred by a drone strike.
Just saw a youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2ucpEeBfQg which offered 3 points. first, when the minimum wage was raised business for fast food joints skyrocketed. This was seen as an unabashed Good Thing. Working people had more money to spend and they spent it. But apparently they were spending it on fast food. Why? Were they buying a Big Mac on their way to their second job?

If you haven't listened to Cythnia McKinney's most recent broadcast on Pacifica Radio, “Midnight Oil”, dated 30 Jan 2017, I highly recommend it. Podcast also uploaded at radio4all.net.
Near the end, approx. 37 mins into the broadcast, she includes an old 1950's show, which is not so coincidental, about a swindler and cheat named Dr. Walter Trump. Very entertaining and pertinent today.
