Wow, Bernie in the Appalachians

Jaw dropping enthusiasm

When I clicked online to Bernie's kick-off site and looked at the rallies planned in these venerable old mountains, my jaw literally dropped and a gasp of air joined my exploding smile.

"My god, this area is deep red." There exist no Democratic representation in DC from any of these isolated areas where the streams flow swift and most livings are made by toiling on the land.

A long standing joke about Avery County, NC is that they have two Republican parties competing in county elections. I recall an editor telling me years ago to keep my mouth shut at county commission meetings, "they all carry guns," she said.

It's been difficult for me to buy into and agree with the pundits suggesting that Sen. Sander's appeal comes mostly from an elite demographic.

It's doesn't. Sky-high poverty rates distinguish the below Va, TN and NC counties.

Definition of exuberance, these folks are organizing for Bernie.

America needs big ideas and nonsense. We need to show Bernie we have his back!!!!
July 29 Organizing Meeting

And, I searched more zips in rural areas and found the same eye-popping results. July 29 may be a day of political destiny.

the webcast from one of the Tri-Cities (Johnson City). Wasn't clear if it was only going to be accessible to folks who are 'signed up' to participate, or if it is open to the public (to view).

Don't give out any email address anymore, and only use an encrypted account when it is an absolute necessity. So, that may knock us out of viewing it.

Have a good one!

A plus to today's work is meeting people living close by, on Roan Mtn. even, I enjoy that.

Not sure i described to those not familiar with this area of the Appalachians how significant the news is. A poster attempted to confuse Appalachia with Appalachians (nouns and adjectives) and i left that correction until an hour or so ago. We don't live in Appalachia, that's the coal country. It's Appalachians, here; no biggie, yet clarity matters.

supporters, Smiley.

Actually, because of the extreme heat, we've come back home. (The weather where we've been camping was slated to hit 95-96 degrees, ambient air, by tomorrow.) Our weather, here, should top out at about 91-92 degrees, at least a little less severe. We plan/hope to pick up where we left off in September or October--hopefully, as early as Labor Day Weekend, if weather permits.

Even the poor dog has to be dragged out of the camper (or the house) to do his business. We had him pretty much stripped when he was groomed 3 weeks ago, and he still shows signs of distress after his evening walk.

As for me, I've always despised hot weather, which is one reason that I loved Alaska so much!

you about the heat, can't take it anymore, hard to breathe for one thing.
Kudos to the 70,000 folks working together on the Bernie Redditt site, that a lot of volunteers: https://www.reddit.com/r/SandersForPresident/

Looks like from my accounting, on the official Sander's site, two thousand more folks signed up today for the kick-offs on July 29 and more than fifty new events were posted today. This is going to climb to 100,000, imho, or more and these numbers don't include all the Facebook activity that's going on, so who knows how large that volunteer operation is?

And, it was a charm baby-sitting the diary yesterday, meeting like-minded folks who live up here, some a short crow's flight away.

Do you folks ever camp on Watauga Lake? I use to guide on the Watauga River, the gorge going through Elizabethon, and the Nolichucky and the S. Holston, beautiful days and country.

it is in the neighborhood of Johnson City, and I've been promising an old friend that we would look him up the next time we're in that part of the state.

We have two favorite state parks--Falls Creek Falls and Standing Stone. Neither are as fancy, or as 'touristry' as some parks, but what we look for is beautiful scenery, and peace and quiet--so they suit us. (And if we have an emergency, medical or otherwise, we're within decent travel time of our medical facilities.)

I did do a stint at one of the North Carolina (girls) camps--Camp Merrie-Woode. It's weird, I remember distinctly that the mailing address was "Sapphire, NC," but, in Wikipedia, it mentions "Cashiers, NC." It was built along Fairfield Lake in Jackson County. I do recall that the Camp was located not too far from Highlands, and that it was a decent drive to Asheville [when we had a day off]. It's certainly very beautiful country, and pretty similar to parts of East Tennessee. BTW, I've had the dubious distinction of having visited both the Biltmore Estate and the Asheville Memorial Hospital ER, all in the same day. Wink (But that's a story for another day, LOL!)

Hope you do a write-up on the webcast with Bernie. It wouldn't surprise me a bit, but what his campaign breaks records for that type of event, just like they've done for his campaign rallies.
