The White House faction pushing for war with Syria and Iran

I've been writing about this for weeks, but now the cabal in the White House that wants a much wider war is becoming clear.

A pair of top White House officials is pushing to broaden the war in Syria, viewing it as an opportunity to confront Iran and its proxy forces on the ground there, according to two sources familiar with the debate inside the Donald Trump administration.
Ezra Cohen-Watnick, the senior director for intelligence on the National Security Council, and Derek Harvey, the NSC’s top Middle East advisor, want the United States to start going on the offensive in southern Syria, where, in recent weeks, the U.S. military has taken a handful of defensive actions against Iranian-backed forces fighting in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Their plans are making even traditional Iran hawks nervous, including Defense Secretary James Mattis, who has personally shot down their proposals more than once, the two sources said.

When even "Mad Dog" Mattis refuses to attack Iranian forces, then the plan must be bat-sh*t crazy.

Targeting Iranian proxies in Syria would aggravate relations with Shiite-ruled Iraq and “blow up the strategic relationship” with Baghdad, Kahl said. And it would put thousands of U.S. troops in Iraq at risk of retaliation from Shiite militia just when U.S.-led forces are close to defeating the Islamic State.

I'm glad the Pentagon recognizes this "little" Iraqi militia problem.
Syria and Iraq are increasingly united militarily, and an attack against Syria would be a threat to Iraq (and Iran) as well.
There are even reports of Iraqi militias crossing the border into Syria.

Despite the push-back from the Pentagon, the pro-war-against-everyone faction has still managed a dangerous escalation of arms in southern Syria.

However, the sudden decision to move the artillery into Syria has raised the concern of Syria’s ally, Russia. Russia’s Defense Ministry responded to the U.S. deployment of HIMARS inside of Syria with anxiety, warning in a statement that the artillery would soon be used against the Syrian Arab Army and pro-government militias active in the region.
...Russia’s Foreign Ministry also condemned the HIMARS deployment on Friday, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noting that, according to Russian military data, no Daesh militants are active in the region where the HIMARS has been deployed. Lavrov speculated that the real motive behind the HIMARS deployment at Al-Tanf may be to cut off Syrian troops from allies in nearby Iraq.
Russia’s concerns are hardly unfounded, as the U.S. military, particularly at Al-Tanf, has opened fire on and killed pro-government forces on multiple occasions in recent months. The U.S. has claimed on several occasions that the area surrounding the Al-Tanf base is a “deconfliction zone,” similar to those created by an agreement made between Russia, Iran, and Turkey with the support of the Syrian government. However, the U.S. unilaterally created the deconfliction zone at Al-Tanf without the approval of the Syrian government – it is, therefore, not recognized by Damascus or Moscow.

Russian forces claim they have killed two more Isis field commanders named as Abu Omar al-Beljiki and Abu Yassin al-Masri, in air strikes near the eastern Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor.

The defence ministry’s statement came a day after Russia said it may have killed the terrorist group’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in an air strike last month.

This is horrible. Things could escalate very quickly. (And here I thought we had dodged the bullet by not electing war mongering Hillary!)

Nowhere is it truer what I've been saying since 2015 at least: Trump is Hillary in a boy suit! Hillary is Trump in a girl suit!

Especially on the issue of Forever War. Both of then looooove them some Forever War!

@thanatokephaloides Putin said time and again that US policy never changes, no matter who is President, and he's seen four come and go since coming to power. Like most countries, the US is run by its unelected bureaucracy, at least in that regard.

@dervish thanks I watched those interviews and was really impressed by Putin's ... um, everything? He is a brilliant propagandist I guess.

Before, I never thought about 25 million people being suddenly ex-pats when the Soviet Union fell apart. Of course some of those citizens still consider themselves Russian, duh. The build up of NATO since is pretty pretty disgusting if you ask me, for what purpose?

I have a world map, a real paper one with a legend and distances and stuff. I'm not sure if the message gets through on a small screen, but anyone that looks at the size and location of Russia compared to the United States, well to me it looks like their future is awesome and sustainable. While Amerika seems to be shrinking in on itself as elites hoard the remainders. Yet another bubble, ever smaller group on top benefiting from it.

By the end of part four I felt like, if only our government would rein in the corruption here just a little, it would be oh so great! That is some powerful propaganda, eh. Good job lowering my expectations again anyway. lol

Between the two they could effectively shut down any potential corridor to Iraq.

Now they'll say that increased friction with Shia militia has blown their chances at defeating Daesh, and Daesh will live to fight another day (wink, wink). Let's face it, advisors like those two are allies of Daesh, whether they say so or not.

@dervish
and there's something fishy about Cohen-Watnick's resume:

...questions from longtime intelligence officials about how Cohen-Watnick, a 30-year-old with apparently only a single, allegedly trouble-filled, junior-level tour of duty with the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in Afghanistan on his résumé, managed to secure one of the most consequential jobs in the White House: coordinating all of the U.S. intelligence community’s operations with the Oval Office and Congress. In less than a year, Cohen-Watnick had been raised from the equivalent rank of an army captain to a three-star general.

it runs the risk of pulling Iraq, Iran and possibly Lebanon deeper into the fray. This would make the Iraq War seem like a schoolyard fight in comparison.

I note that there is a build up of Israeli assets on Lebanon's southern border, if they attack, they usually like to do it in the summertime.

the HIMARS directly to the moderate advocates of genocide, thereby we can wash our hands of the matter.

I'd love to know who in the military/intelligence world thinks there's such a thing as winning a nuclear war. And there's no doubt that they exist and persist in the counsels of government.

@jim p or whatever they're calling them now, and then in year or two, they'll be used against us somewhere else.

That seems to be a trend in brass circles, that MAD is obsolete, and that our new ABMs can handle anything. It seems that no one remembers the vagaries, confusion, and mistakes that can occur in strategic weapon confrontations.

@snoopydawg or Syrian troops, but international law is near worthless. It would be war, plain and simple, and the US would be the aggressor.

It was 1945 before the German civilians found out that Poland didn't really launch an attack on Germany, starting the war. The German media had been lying to them the whole time.

Ours will too.

Is tired of pounding sand on the domestic front, so he's arming up for desert safari. As far as I can tell there nothin left of Syria but miles of sand, rubble and the occasional lizard. I mean look at the fotos no natural green. It does have a nice coast line but the Russians are camping there. Lord Trump is gathering conscripts for the coming crusade. What could go right?

have broken the agreement to cooperate on Syria. The precipitating event? The US shot down a Syrian jet that was bombing Daesh.

How the heck does that even compute?
