What Happened in Turkey?

I wish that the government would do a factual statement and press conference on the Turkey coup. The whole thing really does not make sense and so far no one is being upfront.
Was it us?
Was it a false flag by Erdogan?
This is a very important issue and our government needs to come clean ASAP. If we were involved, the people want to know,if not then who was it and why. Don't BS our government knows and of we don't then they need to fire all the leadership at the CIA and NSA.
Something stinks here

I think there are many different views
My understanding is the secular military was being displaced and fought back. Evidently the people were not into a military coup and stood up. The coup failed after appearing not to have been backed by the most senior ranks of the military. Turkey's main opposition parties, too, condemned the attempted overthrow of the government. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan will probably take advantage of an attempted military coup to strengthen his grip on power.

A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.
Turkey expected to request US extradite Fethullah Gulen
Al Jazeera: Turkey attempted coup: Thousands of police suspended
that quote is near the end, all that article is quite distressing to me.
Gulen was a favored immigrant of Bill Clinton.
There are Foundation ties. For humanitarian reasons he will never be extradited.

My Take
here:
Also, although Erdogan is certainly not above using false flags, in this case I think it's doubtful.
The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?
On the other hand:
Pat Lange says:
So while Erdogan didn't directly plan the coup, he may have baited the plotters to try it so he could expose them and root them out.
Seems plausible.

I agree NHK
The events don't seem to fit a carefully choreographed false flag operation, but they were surprisingly amateurish, more amateurish than one would expect of the Turkish military. Lange's suggestion is consistent with the facts.
I think Lookout essentially has it right
I don't think this was one of ours. It was too amateurish. I don't think Gulen, Erdogan's exiled opponent, had much to do with it. Erdogan is blaming it on Gulen's followers, but I think that is a convenient excuse to crack down on anyone in Turkey that may favor Gulen. Turkey has a tradition having a secular society since Ataturk. The military has for decades seen itself as the guardians of this tradition. Erdogan is a wannabe dictator/Caliph and has been dismantling the secular state, dismantling opposition and has engaged in purges of opposition within the military. At the same time he has supported ISIS while claiming to oppose them (much like Saudi Arabia). These facts led many in the military to strongly oppose him. The US with Clinton as Secretary of State was happy to work with him, probably because he has been a strong supporter of corporate interests and because Clinton has a talent for making bad decisions. Kerry has been less enthusiastic in his support of Erdogan, but not to the point he would have instigated a coup. He might have been happy to support the coup if it had succeeded (although the public rhetoric would have been grave with lots of mentions of support for democracy). Gulen is accusing Erdogan of staging a false flag operation. I doubt that this was the case. Erdogan is certainly not above such a thing, but the details don't seem consistent with a false flag operation. You can be sure, however, that Erdogan will use the opportunity to eliminate opposition including those that had nothing to do with the coup. The net result of the failed coup is that it is disastrous for Turkey and the middle east. It is hugely important and will have enormous impact in the middle east for a long time.
Edit: See Not Henry Kissinger's comment above concerning Pat Lange for another possibility.

What's worse?

I don't and didn't believe this was real from the first
announcement. Erdogan is another in a long line of puppets placed and maintained by the people that matter. He's received a lot of unwanted attention since taking office, as he's buried himself in the part of scary-crazy strongman-populist to the point that even the Turks were beginning to roll their eyes.
Whether it is a straight-up media play, a set-up, or simply the worst planned coup in history, the point is that it never had a chance of succeeding at anything but drawing attention, and further entrenching another corrupt, 'friendly' buffer between the thieves and their victims.
Look at what Erdogan's Turkey has been up to, how it conducts itself, and the stories nobody noticed because of this 'attempted coup'.
Too early to tell (as if our government would tell us anyway)
But nothing would surprise me. Whether it was a real coup attempt or if it was actually Erdogan's own little Reichstag Fire, I doubt that we will be told.

Erdogan is a nasty piece of work
Kemal Ataturk must be rolling in his grave.
Why not just reinstall the closest descendant of the last Ottoman Sultan/Caliph and have done with it.
