The function of man is to live, not to exist ~ Jack London

Escape in the new online collection of the British Museum

The British Museum has revamped its online collections database, making over 1.9 million photos of its collection available for free online under a Creative Commons license.

This new version of their online database has been unveiled earlier than planned due to the closure of the museum and the fact that there’s a lot of people stuck at home and visiting museums virtually.

The relaunch also sees 280,000 new object photographs and 85,000 new object records published for the very first time, many of them acquisitions the Museum has made in recent years, including 73 portraits by Damian Hirst, a previously lost watercolour by Rossetti, and a stunning 3,000-year-old Bronze age pendant.https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection

The people upstairs all practice ballet
Their living room is a bowling alley
Their bedroom is full of conducted tours.
Their radio is louder than yours,
They celebrate week-ends all the week.
When they take a shower, your ceilings leak.
They try to get their parties to mix
By supplying their guests with Pogo sticks,
And when their fun at last abates,
They go to the bathroom on roller skates.
I might love the people upstairs more
If only they lived on another floor.
~ Ogden Nash

The Tempest ~ Giorgione, 1505-1508

to the point that some farmers are facing crop failures, on top of all the supply-chain problems due to corona.

Caitlin Johnstone occasionally posts on Reddit, including to Way of the Bern! Following a hiatus of 7 or 8 months, over the last couple of weeks she’s made a string of excellent posts. The earthquake of seeing Bernie bending the knee to Biden seems to have set off a tsunami in her or, to mix metaphors, kindled something anew, a holy fire like the flame of an acetylene torch cutting through the rusted-out boilerplate of Dem party establishment b.s. …

Thanks for the museum and history links smiley. Those look like hours of fun.

Seems like we're finally turning the corner on spring, with warmer temps on the way next week. Time to plant more summer crops here.

Lines Written In Early Spring
William Wordsworth

I HEARD a thousand blended notes,
While in a grove I sate reclined,
In that sweet mood when pleasant thoughts
Bring sad thoughts to the mind.

To her fair works did Nature link
The human soul that through me ran;
And much it grieved my heart to think
What man has made of man.

Through primrose tufts, in that green bower,
The periwinkle trailed its wreaths;
And 'tis my faith that every flower
Enjoys the air it breathes.

The birds around me hopped and played,
Their thoughts I cannot measure:---
But the least motion which they made,
It seemed a thrill of pleasure.

The budding twigs spread out their fan,
To catch the breezy air;
And I must think, do all I can,
That there was pleasure there.

If this belief from heaven be sent,
If such be Nature's holy plan,
Have I not reason to lament
What man has made of man?

The new British Museum collection opened Thursday and i got lost. The other site is also splendid, a good go to place on the web.

Love the Wordsworth poem; especially this morning as we too have today, tomorrow and Monday in the mid-sixties before we cool back down to fifties for a week in forecast.

Would enjoy going to the farmer's market which has it's opening today and see the usual farmer who sells herbs at good prices, but, i'm afraid of the crowd as most folks around here seem to carry on as nothing's going on in the world, oblivious, i suppose that the cases are still increasing in NC and although we've a few counties near the Tennessee line with no death reported, this warm weather will bring folks up the hill and second home owners from GA, FL and East Tennessee never really shut down and that's only 30 minutes away. I do know this, our local healthcare workers are stressed out already as they know we don't have the needed medical resources if and probably when the virus arrives in force,

Enjoy the Spring weather and throw some salt over your left shoulder on the walk to the garden before planting, Grandma, did. Smile

@smiley7 and pick up at market.
My local farmers market opening today, but you pre-order either from farmer or using a specific farmers market app. It appears from web site you can also buy at the market. The vendors are spread way apart. You are not allowed out of your car, no foot traffic. They are sanitizing between customers.
Before they switched this year to this format, farmers would let you pre-order and some had a pick up site and day different than the actual market as an extra.
It is worth looking for a web site and checking into some of these options.

just returned, took the chance. They had marked the walking areas with x and so forth but it was maddening, folks ignoring the rules and crowding in, about half in masks, others congregating in clumps having good time group conversations close together. Oh well, made my way and purchased two inch herb plants from the usual guy, a bunch of turnips with green tops and got out of there.

Thankfully, we do have local famers and coops where you can join or place weekly orders for pick-up, they've been doing that for years, but our farmer's market has no advance sales or drive up.

I really don't go often on Saturdays, most of the produce is very expensive and soon a truck farmer will be out, well in June and he has great prices, plus peaches from down the mountain. Since i gave up the garden due to uncle ned's passing and my health a few years ago, the truck farmer has been a blessing to me. He saves the blemished peaches and tomatoes for me, nice friend.

Folks not social distancing really concerns me as i've said before, tourists flock here from all over. Thankfully our ski resorts apparently just closed in time, March 17, not a day too soon because most ski areas have clusters of virus from the international travel, out west and in Europe, according to NBC.

Should be a good Spring day for you, please be safe out there.

at 3, up at 4 to make bread and deal with unfinished chores and projects from yesterday. Now 6 and still waiting for sunrise - the damn birds hae been quite vociferously partying for at least an hour now.

Another museum collection up on line and another site to watch an learn; hoo boy. Many more hours I can spend; gotta find a way to multi-task some of this or at least drag it outdoors with me.

We hope to hit farmers' market today, mostly for salmon and maybe some rock cod too, maybe more spuds and shrooms, but we do have a ton of veggies in the house already. Crows now joining the chorus.

Thanks for the OT and the additional sources of info and distraction.

The wealth collected overwhelms me and reading a couple of articles from Europe about galleries facing ruin prompted me to get in touch with older artist friends and producers in theatre and dance this week; all crying over their prospects, survival never being easy, what the hell's in store; we've not a Holger Cahill on the horizon to lead a WPA Federal Art Project nor the political will to even place moratoriums on rent and mortgages for that matter.

However, having promised myself to undo the stress of the last two months in positive ways, old brain, motivated by those renewed conversations must cast a line into the creative process to see how some thing might be accomplished. Anyways, had the thought, waiting for the fish to bite ...

Turned off the morning news, beautiful music fills the air instead, wondering if i could still do Howl in standup?

Relaxing in Chaos
A million pieces on the ground
as the glass shatters.
Can it be put back together
or will it come apart again?
It is time for surrender.

Chaos inside and out,
opportunity to create afresh,
something new is awakening,
something new is coming along,
something new is happening,
relax in the chaos and create
your new world.

Everything has been living
beyond it's means
so chaos has been planted
to wake the masses,
to question your life,
to question your world,
to abandon the broken glass.

The world is out of balance
only to make people think.
Think about the life you want,
think about the community you want,
think about the world you
desire to exist within.

Abilities within your fingertips,
reaching beyond your normal stretch,
enables resilience
the key to the door.
Step into the chaos,
embrace the unbalance,
use the key to find
balance return.

We are living in a time of opportunity to change our world. Hold steady everyone and make the changes you've wanted. As we enter a new world, we must be fluid, we must demand honesty, integrity from all.

Be grateful - practice the gratitude muscle. Live in the present. Live in love.

Have a lovely Saturday, everyone! Pleasantry

Monday will be an anniversary date of Kent State, another never forgotten memory seared into the memory of our souls, will never forget the day nor hopefully its significance. Meant to put a mention in the body of today's OT, but forgot. I write this this attempting to say, along with everything else from that time, it all culminated that day long ago in my youthful soul and i, for one made many choice since because of it, not all good or bad, just choices.

Thanks again for bringing love and hope to this morning.

Sunny again and dry. The leaves are tumbling down from the Eucs as never before. Times they are a-changin’...

Just reread this and was again blown away

The Hollow Men by TS Elliot

I
We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats' feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar

Shape without form, shade without colour,
Paralysed force, gesture without motion;

Those who have crossed
With direct eyes, to death's other Kingdom
Remember us—if at all—not as lost
Violent souls, but only
As the hollow men
The stuffed men.

Ii
Eyes I dare not meet in dreams
In death's dream kingdom
These do not appear:
There, the eyes are
Sunlight on a broken column
There, is a tree swinging
And voices are
In the wind's singing
More distant and more solemn
Than a fading star.

Let me be no nearer
In death's dream kingdom
Let me also wear
Such deliberate disguises
Rat's coat, crowskin, crossed staves
In a field
Behaving as the wind behaves
No nearer—

Not that final meeting
In the twilight kingdom

III
This is the dead land
This is cactus land
Here the stone images
Are raised, here they receive
The supplication of a dead man's hand
Under the twinkle of a fading star.

Is it like this
In death's other kingdom
Waking alone
At the hour when we are
Trembling with tenderness
Lips that would kiss
Form prayers to broken stone.

IV
The eyes are not here
There are no eyes here
In this valley of dying stars
In this hollow valley
This broken jaw of our lost kingdoms

In this last of meeting places
We grope together
And avoid speech
Gathered on this beach of the tumid river

Sightless, unless
The eyes reappear
As the perpetual star
Multifoliate rose
Of death's twilight kingdom
The hope only
Of empty men.

V
Here we go round the prickly pear
Prickly pear prickly pear
Here we go round the prickly pear
At five o'clock in the morning.

Between the idea
And the reality
Between the motion
And the act
Falls the Shadow
For Thine is the Kingdom

Between the conception
And the creation
Between the emotion
And the response
Falls the Shadow
Life is very long

Between the desire
And the spasm
Between the potency
And the existence
Between the essence
And the descent
Falls the Shadow
For Thine is the Kingdom

For Thine is
Life is
For Thine is the

This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

Thank you, magi.

A cold coming we had of it,
Just the worst time of the year
For a journey, and such a long journey:
The ways deep and the weather sharp,
The very dead of winter.'
And the camels galled, sorefooted, refractory,
Lying down in the melting snow.
There were times we regretted
The summer palaces on slopes, the terraces,
And the silken girls bringing sherbet.
Then the camel men cursing and grumbling
and running away, and wanting their liquor and women,
And the night-fires going out, and the lack of shelters,
And the cities hostile and the towns unfriendly
And the villages dirty and charging high prices:
A hard time we had of it.
At the end we preferred to travel all night,
Sleeping in snatches,
With the voices singing in our ears, saying
That this was all folly.

Then at dawn we came down to a temperate valley,
Wet, below the snow line, smelling of vegetation;
With a running stream and a water-mill beating the darkness,
And three trees on the low sky,
And an old white horse galloped away in the meadow.
Then we came to a tavern with vine-leaves over the lintel,
Six hands at an open door dicing for pieces of silver,
And feet kicking the empty wine-skins.
But there was no information, and so we continued
And arriving at evening, not a moment too soon
Finding the place; it was (you might say) satisfactory.

All this was a long time ago, I remember,
And I would do it again, but set down
This set down
This: were we led all that way for
Birth or Death? There was a Birth, certainly
We had evidence and no doubt. I had seen birth and death,
But had thought they were different; this Birth was
Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death.
We returned to our places, these Kingdoms,
But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation,
With an alien people clutching their gods.
I should be glad of another death.

You, too, my friend, take good care and be safe out there.

Thank you all.

Here in the SW corner of Burgundy, it is now non-stop rain, heavy at times after several days or a week of very comfortable weather: warm days, cool nights. Now we are back to late winter/early spring. Without green houses or special warm covers, gardens would curl up their toes. Birdies are having a hard time figuring out what to do: calling and nesting. We have Mésange Bleue (Chickadees with blue wings, yellow bellies) nesting in the holes of concrete block walls.

Homesteading in France:
We are now living in a CanvasCamp Bell Tent 600 DD (Double Door) along with a new kitchen tent, a utility tent and a few other things on our own property for the first time in a year and a half. Work on destructing and reconstructing the house has moved in fits and starts, but we really need to be on our little piece of land next to the petite riviere Mussy. Moving from one hotel apartment or gîte to another has not been healthy.

COVID is making getting much needed DIY items really difficult and our builder is having trouble getting materials. Our recycling/trash centers (deshetteries) are closed, so stuff just piles up.

Teddy (wire haired dachshund - sanglier hunter) is sooo very happy to be home.

I am hoping fresh country air will heal my broken lungs and hyper sensitive reactive face from assaults of mold, diesel, toxique interiors and city construction work tearing down old stone and block buildings. The dust must have been full of awful stuff: locals were complaining of burning eyes and skin as were we.

Spring

Somewhere
a black bear
has just risen from sleep
and is staring

down the mountain.
All night
in the brisk and shallow restlessness
of early spring

I think of her,
her four black fists
flicking the gravel,
her tongue

like a red fire
touching the grass,
the cold water.
There is only one question:

how to love this world.
I think of her
rising
like a black and leafy ledge

to sharpen her claws against
the silence
of the trees.
Whatever else

my life is
with its poems
and its music
and its glass cities,

it is also this dazzling darkness
coming
down the mountain,
breathing and tasting;

all day I think of her -—
her white teeth,
her wordlessness,
her perfect love.

A very familiar bear waking with the bees anticipating honey.

Gorgeous and descriptive poem, thank you for bringing it and yourself. Sorry, i missed you last week.

Small sages, oregano's, dill, fennel, rosemary, thyme and tarragon fill the windowsill and the smells fill my small room; piano station of Pandora's in the background, fresh turnips in the fridge; trying to make the most of this hermitage before it makes the most of me. What a difference a rock wall can make.

And if the back holds, going fishing tomorrow, meeting an old friend, a jewelry maker down in the wilderness at a go to place we know, its a simple place in a hidden valley with a natural pond fed by the rushing stream and view up to Grandfather mountain most folks never see in person, special place.

It will be good to get out in the sun, finally.

A pug in North Carolina has tested positive for the coronavirus, which may be the first such case for a dog in the U.S.

The dog, Winston, was part of a Duke University study in which a family in Chapel Hill, the McLeans, were tested for the virus.

The mother, the father, the son and the pug tested positive, while the daughter, another dog and a cat tested negative, according to NBC affiliate WRAL of Raleigh.
Dr. Chris Woods, the principal investigator for the Duke study, said Winston may be the first dog in the country to have a confirmed case of the virus.

BTW, wanted to share a few observations about grocery shopping/delivery from Wally World. (I know, many folks don't want to trade with them--we rarely did. But, now, because of their contactless Pick Up and Delivery service, we're forced to so do.) Anyhoo, it's actually paying off in savings, because of their very generous substitution policy. More on that later.

On another topic, we're very leery of recommendations regarding elective surgery, etc., and/or unnecessary in-person doctor's visits. Wonder if anyone here is being advised differently. (We plan to lay low for quite a bit longer than has been recommended.)

Hope Everyone is doing well. Stay safe. Pleasantry

Special Health Care for Congress: Lawmakers' Health Care Perks
A little known office on Capitol Hill provides quality care at a low price.

Excerpt:

Sept. 30, 2009— -- This fall while members of Congress toil in the U.S. Capitol, working to decide how or even whether to reform the country's health care system, one floor below them an elaborate Navy medical clinic -- described by those who have seen it as something akin to a modern community hospital -- will be standing by, on-call and ready to provide Congress with some of the country's best and most efficient government-run health care.

Sources said when specialists are needed, they are brought to the Capitol, often at no charge to members of Congress.

"If you had, for example, prostate cancer, you would go to one of the centers of excellence for the country, which would be Johns Hopkins. If you had coronary artery disease, we would engage specialists at the Cleveland Clinic. You would go to the best care in the country. And, for the most part, nobody asked what your insurance was," Balbona said. (Balbona was a former OAP Staff Physician.)

In addition to Balbona, several former staff members and private physicians who have consulted at the OAP as recently as last year agreed to talk to ABC News on background. They described a culture centered on meeting the needs and whims of members of Congress, with almost no concern for cost.

Missed replying to you, too, last week. Good to see you. Glad the delivery is working out from wally world. As to your question, i'll share my doctor's orders: Chapel Hill team said at the end of March to "stay put until August at least," local spine doctor didn't want me coming out to his office last week when my pain deformed me, not even for a few quick shots of steroids and an absolute no to an elective epidural.

Just before you asked and as replying to rand, the thought of how afraid i was at the farmer's market today, a strange feeling of not trusting people, eyes not meeting, an instinctive, primal reaction going on.

Hey, Pug went viral here in NC, thanks for bringing the article. Poor creatures; didn't recall the Chapel Hill family name.

Cheers for your shout-out to our heroes.

You two take good care and be safe, neighbors.

@smiley7

advice syncs closely with ours--Mr M has been told not to consider in-person' routine follow-up exams until (at least) September--at which time, the situation will be reassessed. (unless, that is, it's deemed necessary during his now-regular virtual check-ups)

Not long ago, saw that you mentioned Aldi--that's our supermarket of preference, except for items we can't get there (which are many, of course). Actually, we prefer their canned goods, and various other items, including seasonal ones, for both cost savings and/or price, as well as taste/quality. Having said that, ordering from them (using Instacart) is considerably more expensive than Wally World, IIRC. Reminds me, I should doublecheck on that, since I haven't ordered from Aldi in quite a few months (IOW, since the current CV crisis began). At the time, had no reason to subscribe, so, only paid for the service on a per delivery basis. Yeah, think I should check it out, again, soon.

Hope you don't get too many pesky tourists, increasing the risk of contracting CV. Forgot that you're in a resort area, which, while nice in many respects, could reasonably be of concern under the present circumstances.

Thanks for another lovely OT, Smiley. The art and poetry you present every Saturday are totally amazing! Good

and even have something lucid to say today!
Things I have done today that haven't been possible since late night, April 19, when my left hand stopped working:I can type a little with all fingers. I can grab the seat belt in my vehicle and yank it across my body. I held a small pitcher of water. I put in the door key, twisted it, opened my office door. I hand washed some dishes without breaking anything.
British Musuem: At Easter Island, I found the best preserved Maui was in not on the island, but in the BM. Same story in Greece, Kenya, Germany, Jordan, and probably a few other countries.
Virtual museum is better than no museum.
A great day to all!

Good to see you and know you arm and hand are healing.

Were those statues honoring fresh water?

Colonizers take, learned that from Conrad and the British were kings of ransom, too.

On the other hand, without museums, the Trumps of the world would gold-plate and stain every precious thing; as life, apparently has little meaning to them.

Anyways, glad we've this respite from the madness. My back's better, yesterday and today, as well.

Take good care and be safe out there.

Edit for spelling

@smiley7 @smiley7 but glad it is improving.
Countries are raising hell at the BM, who is making $ on tourism, when it is their artifacts, or whatever, that belongs to them, and just might make them some tourism $.
As for the best preserved Maui, in truth, even the experts on Easter Island realize that the specimen preserved by the BM is the only one that isn't deteriorating by wind, rain, and time. The Islanders know they do not have the resources to save the masks.
Tough call.
One of the tourists on our bus was a descendant of Capt. Smith, I think Smith, that landed there, destroyed everything but the mask he took.
She was there to apologize and donate money to the archeological museum.
If it wasn't such a difficult transit to get there, Easter Island would be my "go to" 4 or 5 day getaway. I think it takes a minimum of 3 flights one way, possibly 4. Too many layovers to make it a habit.

This afternoon, I drove to check out a "free on the curb" propane grill someone was giving away on craigslist. The ad included a photo of the grill sitting on the curb, and noted that it was still working.

When I got there, something was wrong ... the knobs were missing ... I opened the cabinet, and there they were ... okay ... so then I start looking more closely at it ... and ... and ...

... some dick has clearly come by and stripped the valves that the knobs are supposed to go on, as well as the side burner and the main connector/hose bit that connects to the propane tank. So he's got what he wanted and stuck the homeowner with a non-functional pile of scrap metal. What a dick.

Friend called earlier, said that he's learned his unemployment debit card has been issued and someone had requested a replacement card already; damn, so my friend's broke and having to go to BOA first thing Monday and get in the phone line to the state unemployment office.

Read in places in the U S of A, folks wearing masks are being threatened by gunslingers; wasn't it the horse that mattered so much?

than I did for me.

Though I was annoyed when I went by another place with a "worked last time we used it" blurb, and as I examined it, it was clear that if that was true, it was only dumb luck, because the guts of thing were dissolving into bits.
