Link to Target petition on change.org
One of the first comments that shows up there is this:

We’re doing just fine in California without the single use plastic bags. Please bring this to the rest of the country!!

I was living in California when the so called "bag ban" started.
I can tell you it failed.
They charge ten cents per bag for "reusable" plastic bags that are a lot thicker and more durable plastic than the "single use" kind.
The problem is the people not the bags.
People who fail to responsibly dispose of their plastic bags don't care about ten cents per bag.
They still throw them out and now they are 4 to 5 times thicker plastic.
This brings even more plastic into the biosphere than before.
The California model does not work to prevent plastic bag waste from spreading.
Plastic bag bans need to truly ban them not institute a meaningless charge that only works to sell more plastic!
I wonder how many people who signed this petition purchase disposable diapers or mop pads at target?
IMO "Swiffer" use is insane if you are trying to reduce the waste stream.
Same thing for disposable diapers.
Here is a link to P&G web site for swiffer products where you can find ingredients.

Here is some text from one product.

Polypropylene / Polyester / Cellulose

Mopping Pad (Substrate)

A mopping pad consisting of an absorbent core made of cellulose and polyester fibers, which holds the cleaning solution, sandwiched between a soft polypropylene nowowoven floor sheet and back sheet.

bags in Germany some time ago. Also charged two euros for plastic glasses at concerts. Refundable upon return. Served food on ceramic plates at the Berlin airport. It is doable.

And there are plans to ramp up plastic production. Article is in last Thursday’s Hot Air. Thanks for the info and the links.

shop. Yes, there are still people who buy bags at the checkout stand, but I have noticed a huge increase in the number of people bringing and using re-usable bags, which means a lot fewer bags entering the waste stream, and I take note of the bags as well, and a decent percentage are ones that I happen to know are made from recycled plastic bags and bottles which is also a reduction in the waste stream.

@enhydra lutris Back to what I posted... Feel Good nonsense or meaningful action? You decide.
Here is some more information for you, although I doubt you will consider it.

Plastic Pollution Coalition has published a new engineering estimate showing plummeting recycling rates for plastic in United States. Author Jan Dell, a chemical engineer, used U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) data and industry data to estimate the U.S. plastic recycling rate will sink from 9.1 percent in 2015 to 4.4 percent in 2018. Dell estimated the recycling rate could drop as low as 2.9 percent in 2019 if plastic waste import bans are adopted by more countries in Asia.

“In an ever-changing, incomprehensible world the masses had reached the point where they would, at the same time, believe everything and nothing, think that everything was possible and that nothing was true. The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists.”

How she could burn through the distractions of her time and see the hot glowing outlines of reality so clearly.

And at the same time, she could live so fully in the mammal world.

Resplendent is the word that comes to mind. Do not know why. Another beautiful day in paradise. Yes. And no, of course, but looking at the beauty around me makes me smile. Love the fat kitty having a good time. Glass half full for me en este moment. Thanks for the music. Be well...

Getting Ready for the New Decade
Bundling up to brave the cold,
I wipe my brow as I look in the mirror,
another year down the hatch,
I muse
What will 2020 bring?
A decade of decadence
or
a decade of deliverance
or
a decade of development
surely
a decade of something is on its way.
Be ready
don't fret.
Gather up your strength
for we will survive
together.

Have a pleasant Saturday, all! Pleasantry

Rain clouds building on a gray Saturday. It was 50 degrees this morning and headed to 65 today. Going to cover the fire laid out to keep it dry for NY eve or day or both. Found a last jar of pink-eyed purple hull peas in the pantry to soak and cook for NY day. Plenty of collards in the garden now. Sweet potatoes to bake, and a pork roast to smoke. So ought to be a good holiday and start to 2020 here on the homestead.

Hope you all have a good one too!

I for one am also happy that you're here and suspect that we all are. Thanks for another great Sabbleday column. The year raced by and now proceeds to wind down very, very slowly over the course of a few more days, quite cold ones here, until, by some cultural magic, it is the Papal New Year which is also the "western culture" New Year, some 10+ days after the solstice and a bit over 3 weeks before the lunar New Year ushering in the Year of the Rat, or, more completely, the Metal Rat or even White Metal Rat.

Did I mention that it has been cold, near freezing to freezing in the early mornings. The plants seem ok, but I'm not in the least crazy about it. Ah well, don't whine, wine, says the man in the polartec jacket with the uncooperative hands, the sun is slowly rising in the sky.

Have a great one.

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --

image that you posted today. Let me delineate.

The cat: How did it get so damn fat? Why is it so large in relation to the whole of the celebrants? Notice the dog is proportionate with the other subjects but yet the cat is yuge. Since the cat seems to be riding on the dogs back one must assume that that portly cat is not in actuality in the foreground well in front of the gaggle of party-goers but is indeed in perspective with the whole of the jubilant scene. Therefore, that is ONE BIG ASS CAT! How the hell is that dog able to hold the massive weight of said big ass cat? Where did that big ass cat get that big ass fish? Who made that fooker a king and what is it king of? How is King Big Ass Cat holding that glass when we all know that it was customary to remove the dew claws from fat cats back in the era as depicted in this festive scene? Must I imagine an opposable thumb?

The guy in the upper right hand corner. Is that a fish he's about to eat? Is he a pelican?

Who gave that child in the lower left a spirited drink?

Whose reflections are in the mirror to the left?

The lady on the right, why is her breast hanging out? I never saw anything like that at any New Years party I was at. Oh wait, on second thought yes I have seen that, multiple times, never mind.

Why is the fellow to the left spewing his drink? Is he the king's taste tester? Did that fat cat put something in his drink?

I have to go lie down now and rest my head. My world view has been shaken.

It didn’t take long at all here in Auckland to transition to everyone using very robust reusable bags. For $3 you can buy a very long-lasting (years) square bag made of jute with a kind of waxy interior that is moisture containing.

Now what we need are basket weavers to refurbish the practically life-long cane baskets that Germany has used/uses for shopping, forever.

To a happy new year, where single-use plastic is passé!
