Welcome to Saturday ...

“Nobody rose in Packingtown by doing good work. You could lay that down for a rule—if you met a man who was rising in Packingtown, you met a knave. That man who had been sent to Jurgis' father by the boss, he would rise; the man who told tales and spied upon his fellows would rise; but the man who minded his own business and did his work—why, they would "speed him up" till they had worn him out, and then they would throw him into the gutter.”
― Upton Sinclair, The Jungle

The Sower ~ Jean-Francois Millet. 1850

Burlington Snow

Socialist snow on the streets

Socialist talk in the Maverick bookstore

Socialist kids sucking socialist lollipops

Socialist poetry in socialist mouths

—aren’t the birds frozen socialists?

Aren’t the snowclouds blocking the airfield

Social Democratic Appeasement?

Isn’t the socialist sky owned by

the socialist sun?

Earth itself socialist, forests, rivers, lakes

furry mountains, socialist salt

in oceans?

Isn’t this poem socialist? It doesn’t

belong to me anymore.

~ Alan Ginsberg

social justice during election propaganda.

The struggle for justice in every area bleeds across civilizations and centuries, a relentless march with no seeming end in sight. Even Millet was scorned by the well-to-do of his time for depicting common people. In The Gleaners, pictured above, 'women and children remove the bits of grain left in the fields following the harvest, a centuries-old right of the poor.'

In The Sower , he painted a complex metaphor of labour; feeding the rich, i like to think he thought, through the toil and investment of the poor farm workers.

So, what we need desperately is another billionaire to lead us on the central path worn thin by centuries of use. Smile

Rain's on the way, so most likely I'll stay inside, figure out the rest after coffee. May this day treat each of you in special ways.

We’re told to think on the times when those who came before us had nothing, and leave something for the gleaners.

When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that the L_RD your G_d may bless you in all the work of your hands. When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I command you to do this.

—— Deuteronomy, 24:19–22

There’s a command like that mentioned a couple times in Leviticus, too.

I always wondered what that figure was. It was in a lot of books I saw as a kid.

No rain in sight here for another month. This country was built on the shoulders of the working poor, the slaves. Time to stop the big grinding gears. Sand in. Their eyes. Their shoes fill them with rocks. Slow down. It’s a slow rain gonna fall. Thanks for the ot. Be well...

Wish we could share the rain, according to NASA, we're in for a large amount in coming months.

The young friend i told you about had her screening of POW at Lees McRae college the other night, good crowd and response; proud of her, she's my friend's daughter.

Hoping you've a wonderful weekend.

No trade day...or as we say "the flea was washed away". Went to town anyway to pick up a few items and visit the money machine for a little cash for the week.

Woke up with the line from CA Dreamin'...
"...all the leaves are brown and the sky is gray..."
...in my mind.

And another from Dylan...
"...the last of leaves fell from the trees and clung to a new love's breast.
The branches bare like a banjo moaned to the wind that listens the best."

There is a steady fall of leaves today, and the forest floor is a carpet of browns and muted yellows. The drizzle seems to bring out the deer. Saw several mobs last night on the way home from my weekly session. Saw a small group of turkey as I returned home this AM.

Though the leaves have mostly browned, the blueberry bushes were bright red this morning...a last glow of autumn. It is less than a month till winter officially arrives.

Have a wonderful Saturday and weekend folks. Thanks for the OT smiley!

Thanks for reminding us of good tunes and lyrics. Leaves been down a while, rain turning to high winds and cold tonight, but the cold is short-term. Not a good afternoon for the home football game for those who enjoy such things.

Seeing lots of deer, it's bear season in the wilderness, poor bear, they use dogs and run the poor bear for long distances. Best to stay clear of the area when the hunt is on, wish i could end the practice.

Have a great weekend.

Another Saturday, another farmers' market and an easy meal for me tonight as a result. Now it gets seriously hectic in preparation for Thanksgiving day followed by travel prep, travel, and then putting up all the xmas decos and then xmas and taking all same down and a short camping trip all in a crazy whirlwind. Garden expansion, modifications and improvements are only half done, the house and yard are a mess and all my devices are in revolt and I don't particularly give a damn. I guess I'll get back in gear after T-Day cleanup is done. Socialist Ginsberg, Heh. The socialism of the oppressed, who share alike in their repression and struggles, but Hey!, run out and give thanks for all of the wrong things and all of the wrong reasons; to whom or what? Heh. And so it goes, as the man said.

Have a good one.

Well, today is the first day of what will be a very long week for me. Gearing up for our busiest season of the year, the store will be filled with people who will have hundreds of questions. And when I say questions, I mean the kinds of questions that make you dig deep into your tolerance reserve.

"Is there meat in the turkey-less roll?" (It says vegan on the front of the package)

"Why don't you have any Brussels Sprouts?" (The exasperated question is being asked as the customer is standing directly in front of the Brussels sprouts)

"Ling Ling?" (I asked her to repeat her question a few times because I didn't understand what she wanted. When I narrowed it down to a beverage and took her to where our sodas are, she pointed to the lemonade.)

"Do you have...?" (They don't know the name of the product, but they are describing the package and pantomiming how large it is with their hands)

I remember that painting from my Art History 101 class. Didn't know about the detail of the rich criticizing Millet for portraying the poor in his art. Leave it to the rich to be offended by the "unpleasantries" of life. Reminds me of that notorious story Al Franken wrote about in one of his books before he became a politician, where he met Barbra Bush and brought up an issue about the poor and her reply was "why would I want to think about something unpleasant?" The story always stuck in my mind about how the elite think about the rest of us. I guess in that regard, things don't change much, eh?

I feel ya, dealing with us in throngs; used to tell my crews when the mountains become disneylands of crowds, " remember and be like a duck today, let the quires run off like water."

Much is the same just wrapped in more modern conveniences, it seems.

Hope you've a little time for yourself this week and don't let the turkeys in.

It's a loop race this year, starts and ends in Ensenada (course map here).
It's going to be an interesting race, the start had to be postponed 24 hours because of last week's rain. I imagine the course will be wet and muddy.

Which AIPAC/MIC/pharma/bank bought politician are you going to vote for? Don’t be surprised when nothing changes.

@snoopydawg Romaine is my preferred lettuce, and seems to be the variety most likely to make me sick, of course.
I am experimenting on shoes today. If these do not put pressure on my snake-bitten foot, cause it to swell, they would be perfect for traipsing around Guatemala this week.
I hope they work!

OF COURSE. Because last year's e coli tried to come for me at the same time as I was being diagnosed with cancer, which put me off romaine for an entire year, but I finally went and bought and ate some just this week because OF COURSE.

Thanks for the heads up, snoopydawg, I wouldn't have seen this and would likely have finished that salad today but I just went and tossed it out because it is sourced from the contaminated region.

In conclusion, fuck capitalists for being so greedy that they can't even reliably sell a safe bowl of goddamned salad greens.
