Wednesday Open Thread: It's Bob Marley's Birthday

It's Day 37 of the Year 2019 CE, meaning that it's February 6, 2019
It's also, perhaps, your lucky day.

Bob Marley w quote - CrashT_T

For reasons to be noted later, I'm kind of going to bail on this one. One way to do so is to fiddle with elements of the date. It is the sixth. So what about 6? It is the product of two primes, the sum of the first three integers, the lowest perfect number and the number of tri-perfect numbers. So, as to those last two, less obvious facts, I, of course, have a video:

So, it may be the 6th day of the month, but it is the 37th day of the year. So how about some fun with 37, that, just by chance, starts off with 6.

So why should I bail today? I'm writing this on January 13, while preparing for a trip. We're so busy that I even have dental work scheduled the day before we leave, to be finished, 3 days after we return. Immediately upon our return I go get some lab work done, then consult with a surgeon, and other things right on up through February 5th, when I am scheduled for a surgery. I've already got a ton of stuff queued up, but I need to get this one last OT scheduled, and quickly. What I need is for some hero come riding up and save me, like, maybe, the archetypic Mr. Jones:

Sure enough, just in the nick of time like some Deus Ex Machina, up pops Bob Marley, born February 6, 1945, fresh from a run in with the local sheriff.

He told me

Said that we have to

Even in the concrete jungle

Just keep singing songs of freedom

The truth is an offense but not a sin

Ziggy Marley wants to keep cannabis in local farmers’ hands, out of corporate system

While the 49-year-old son of reggae legend Bob Marley and eight-time Grammy award winner has focused past records and songs on personal growth and spiritualism as a way to achieving peace and happiness, Marley said his latest album, “Rebellion Rises,” released in March is his answer to a need for a worldwide wake-up call to pressure the powers that be to stand for humanity.

Marley said he is hoping his upcoming North American tour — which begins Friday in Southern California and will take him to Humboldt State University’s Van Duzer Theatre on Wednesday — will be more than just a show, but rather a rallying cry for peace.

Marley spoke Tuesday about his latest album, future projects and the legalization of cannabis and its effect on local culture.

Bell. I've got more vacations planned, so I need to get more OTs "in the can" so to speak, which means that there may be a few more like this somewhere in the pipeline down the road. Thanks for the "Medication".

Light rain this AM. I skipped the SOTU and all the rebuttals. Just not worth the frustration.

Just a few items I wish were discussed:

The US practices democracy by selecting self-proclaimed leaders over elected ones.
The US supports selected violent dictators in Saudi Arabia, Fascist in Brazil and Ukraine, and declares war on any Western country working on a socialist platform.
The US has plenty of money for war and aggression but not enough to help our young folks, nor provide healthcare LIKE EVERY OTHER DEVELOPED COUNTRY!
The US will prosecute truth tellers like Julian and Snowden because we refuse to see the US as the evil empire.

I could continue but that's a good start on the issues which make me ashamed of the US and what it has become.

@Lookout @Lookout
the great video. Yes, ashamed of the US. Starting when I was in High School I became slowly more and more ashamed and disgusted at what I thought wa th lost promise of this country, and how it devolved from what it should have been into what it had become and was ever more becoming. Then education stepped in and I realized that it never was anything else, the more history I learned, the more I saw the extent to which the cultural, social and economic malady had been here ab initio. We don't need a path correction, but a complete dislocation and restart.

Trump, the great malady, should have been enough to trigger at least stirrings in that direction, but instead it is the same old thing, with a few, who would've been trying to make things right anyway being sidelined and stymied by the vast number who simply point to Trump as a scapegoat and excuse, while plotting simply more of the same-old-shit, but without a wall and with 25% less blatant racism and christofascism.

EDIT: Have a great one, btw.

Cheers for Marley. Warm today with light showers. Boring seems to be the theme this week as in vapid lies in sotu and humdrum half-time super-game histrionics.

The country needs a V-8.

Thanks for the OT and have a good one.

Having no positive expectations with respect to either, I skipped both the SB half-time and the annual Presidential bullshit fest. This frees up time to do other stuff, like cook, plan meals, read e-mail, etc.

Thanks for bringing up V-8, I may just go have myself a tomato beer, the very best of which just happen to be made with V-8, and which we keep around for just that purpose. OTOH, it's still pretty cold out for that, so maybe not.

Have a good one yourself.

nice on the Marley, his son will be in town tonight(h/t eyo) but no funds for tickets to spare. Typical. I have either $ and no time, or time with no $. Makes getting things accomplished a juggling act, most days.

Best wishes for your health issues being resolved speedily and in your favor.

Rather than being outraged at the headline, what are the actual details? Why were they able to pay no taxes? Was it due to carried losses or something like that?
Anyone mad at a company for not pay taxes is misdirecting their anger. Companies follow the law. If you don't like the law elect different politicians. Don't get mad at companies that follow the law.

otachack 51 minutes ago [-]
It's not that simple. Companies lobby to keep, even coerce, laws that benefit them and allow these sorts of things to happen. What is the common person, or collection of persons, supposed to do when they are against that kind of force? I believe one way is to actually be involved in politics and get into the seats that govern and make the laws. But it's easier said than done.

chanandler_bong 37 minutes ago [-]
The answer is to outlaw lobbyists, it would fix a lot of problems. That, and enact term limits for Congress. That will fix even more.

Ding ding ding! bong wins! LOL

Ms. Catlett became an educator, too. After graduating cum laude from Howard University in 1935, she taught high school in Durham, N.C.

Howard hadn’t been her first choice. She had won a scholarship to the Carnegie Institute of Technology, in Pittsburgh, but the college refused to allow her to matriculate when it learned she was black. So she entered historically black Howard, with one semester’s worth of tuition saved by her mother. She earned scholarships to cover the rest.

“I learned how you use your art for the service of people, struggling people, to whom only realism is meaningful,” she later said of this period. ... In 1949 she was arrested, along with other expatriates, during a railroad workers’ strike in Mexico City. Eventually she gave up her American citizenship and was declared an undesirable alien by the State Department. In 1971 she had to obtain a special visa to attend the opening of her one-woman show at the Studio Museum in Harlem.

The Chicago artists were greatly influenced by Marxism, and the role of the Black worker in American society was crucial to their work. They were committed to the belief that art should provide a tangible function for the African-American community. Some were dedicated social realists, while others used modernist aesthetics to create art that communicated universal ideas through Black experiences.

Many of these artists were members of the Communist Party, believing that Communism as an ideological and political tool offered the best solution to both racial discrimination and class subordination. They utilized Black Chicago in their art as a metaphor to help explain broader issues of social, political, and cultural oppression.

From Chicago she went on to New York to study abstraction with modernist sculptor Ossip Zadkine, and from 1944 to 1946 she taught working and lower class Blacks at the George Washington Carver School. Working with students in New York broadened Catlett’s awareness of the Black experience in America. For Catlett, these students reiterated her mother’s experiences as a social worker.
