Time to End U.S. Imperialism?

anti imperialism_1.png

Here we are stumbling toward a presidential election in the United States Empire between Trump and Clinton, Clinton and Trump. The powers that be, via their monopolized corporate media, will not let it become anything other than that. Jill Stein and Gary Johnson can be a sideshow, that third party nuisance, but the main attraction will stay the same, Trump vs. Clinton.

So we'll get one of them for President. Most likely Clinton. Nothing we can do about it. Getting too late for that. I suggested a boycott of the presidential election (note - that doesn't mean not voting at all) well over a year ago when the whole thing started. I thought we were going to get Bush vs. Clinton and what better time to tell our rulers they can shove them and this farcical political system we call "democracy".

Too late for that and the idea wasn't exactly catching on among those that vote. Among the 100 million plus that won't vote it was a great idea. "Ya mean we get to not vote and boycott too? I'm in!"

So how do We the Serfs deal with our new president? How do we deal with this political system that has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to be corrupt, rigged, and in service of the oligarchy/plutocracy (plutarchy)?

Polls show Congress' approval rating among the Serfs has broken the Guiness Book of World Records category of worst political body in the Universe. Only 13-18% give Congress a thumbs up, mostly those aligned with the oligarchy. Everbody else is not particularly happy with how our "representatives" are representing. I'd say a large percentage are downright pissed. It's not just the politicians themselves, it IS the system.

I remember years ago while we lived under the Bush regime thinking why we couldn't get enough people together to accomplish ONE THING. I thought if we could accomplish just ONE THING, maybe that could snowball into two things, then three things and so on. Kind of like breaking the ice on something then the floodgates open.

What I had in mind at that time was ending U.S. imperialism. Specifically the wars started by the Bush regime in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Neverending Global War OF Terror. I wasn't as focused on U.S. imperialism as a whole at that time, more the Bush wars. But there's a helluva lot more to U.S. imperialism than those wars as we've seen since Bush, under Obama, with Russia and China now in the crosshairs.

The thing about U.S. imperialism is that it's so intertwined with the other major problems we Serfs face, including the financial oligarchy, the Trans Pacific Partnership and TTIP, climate change, the national debt, the U.S. economy, and of course our very liberty and freedom which has been usurped by the imperialist War OF Terror and the military/police state that now engulfs our lives.

If we could mount a legitimate challenge to U.S. imperialism, we might be able to topple the House of Cards. And that would impact the entire world and possibly humanity itself. If only we could stop the wars we would be doing the planet a great service.

The notorious imperialist Zbignew Brezinski is on record stating we're seeing the end of the American empire. Obviously those most vested in the Empire won't take that lying down. That's not how it works. But his changed position regarding American Empire signals perhaps an opportunity for We the Serfs to put the hammer down on U.S. imperialism.

Then there's Hillary Clinton. The primary criticism of Clinton from the left is that she's a warmonger, de facto war criminal, and could very well start WWIII. (more accurately advance WWIII, we are IN WWIII right now). She is considered by many as dangerous a person there is on the planet at this time and she's going to become President of the United States of Imperialism. (Anything can happen but that's how it looks now). Her becoming President literally guarantees more war, more regime changes and more killing.

If we can't stop her from becoming President, why don't we try to stop U.S. imperialism before she gets the keys? Or at least lay the groundwork for a sustained protest against U.S. imperialism starting the day she takes office. We already know what she's about, we know what she's capable of, those on the left (and right) that oppose her and U.S. imperialism should take that on NOW. Hillary Clinton as President presents a ready target against U.S. imperialism and a ready made way to protest her presidency.

Focusing on Jill Stein and the Green Party, or Gary Johnson and the Libertarian Party, which have no chance this election, is wasting time. For those that want to vote for her or him, Howard Zinn's approach to voting should be considered. There should be an All Hands on Deck approach to ending U.S. imperialism and preventing Hillary Clinton from killing more people in our names. Jill Stein herself would be better served helping lead such an effort.

There's an event from September 23-25 in Washington D.C. called "No War 2016". It's being held at American University. Many speakers, workshops and a culminating protest. It's only one event, we need much more. This is a way to attack the Clinton presidency and save the world.

global monopoly capital imperialism with the USA playing a leading role in furthering the profits of this deadly system. In supporting roles we have NATO and such front groups as the International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization.

The US intelligence agencies - all 16 of them - play a strong role as does the State Department and such endeavors as the War on Drugs.

The bottom line is to open non industrial countries to exploitation by multinational corporations. These corporations may or may not be headquartered in the USA, many are not; but, they are headquartered in the global north and clustered in New York, London, Berlin, and Tokyo. Monopoly capital is global in reach and needs cheap labor, free or cheap natural resources, and free or nearly free areas to dump their waste. Larry Summers said it best when he said Africa is underpolluted.

The USA is providing the leadership to encircle both Russia and China. Just recently, the USA has gotten permission to use India as a storage site for weaponry and to use bases in India for refueling and repair. The promise to Russia not to expand NATO to Russia's borders has long been reneged on.

I would argue imperialism is alive and well, and like capital, it has a corporate face and international reach.

Lenin said, "Imperialism is the highest form of capitalism". Smedley Butler, who was a Marine General in the late 1800's early 1900's said he was nothing but a "gangster for capitalism". The U.S. isn't alone in practicing imperialism but it is the leader of a global mafia.

and the 1% whole control them are the beneficiaries.

General Butler's book should be required reading for students starting in the 4th grade and going more deeply into his insights each year until graduation, I think. Butler is one person who is immune from red-baiting. He may not have had the best theoretical understanding of what he was leading but he had something unique: First hand knowledge of the system of oppression and how and why it was used.

Notice the picture I posted at the top of the essay. Over 100 years ago people were fighting against imperialism too, now most Serfs don't even know what the fuck it is. That picture btw was during Smedley Butler's day. Here we are now with U.S. imperialism all over the planet and we can't get a rise from the Serfs.

What the hell is wrong with us man? It's like that saying, "are we mice or are we men (or women)?

on workers and leftist academics and entertainers. This has continued unabated since Truman, some times more intensely than others.

This class war caused the CIO to lose power and it eventually joined with the AFL as a junior partner as a survival tactic. The AFL has given us Meany and other labor leaders who were OK with the projection of American power at the expense of workers in other countries as long as member unions - the the AFL-CIO expelled leftist unions - got their share. This group of labor leaders and their go-along-get-along rank and file membership didn't think capital would turn on them, but it did, big time. That unions are supporting anti-union Democrats shows the desperation of what remains of organized labor.

Not Henry Kissinger's picture

If there was hope, it MUST lie in the proles, because only there in those swarming disregarded masses, 85 per cent of the population of Oceania, could the force to destroy the Party ever be generated. The Party could not be overthrown from within. Its enemies, if it had any enemies, had no way of coming together or even of identifying one another. Even if the legendary Brotherhood existed, as just possibly it might, it was inconceivable that its members could ever assemble in larger numbers than twos and threes. Rebellion meant a look in the eyes, an inflexion of the voice, at the most, an occasional whispered word. But the proles, if only they could somehow become conscious of their own strength. would have no need to conspire. They needed only to rise up and shake themselves like a horse shaking off flies. If they chose they could blow the Party to pieces tomorrow morning. Surely sooner or later it must occur to them to do it? And yet ——!

Imagine right after electing Clinton as President we'll have World Peace Day. Good timing.

up

From Wikipedia:

The International Day of Peace, sometimes unofficially known as World Peace Day, is observed annually on 21 September. It is dedicated to world peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence, such as might be occasioned by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access. The day was first celebrated in 1982, and is kept by many nations, political groups, military groups, and peoples. In 2013, for the first time, the Day was dedicated by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to peace education, the key preventive means to reduce war sustainably.

Where are you getting this Nov. 17th date, Al? Or are you proposing We the Serfs declare our own World Peace Day not co-opted by the UN and associated NGOs (No Good Organizations)?

the only way to end US imperialism is to end capitalism or severely kneecap it. Take the profitability out of war and resource grabbing and the need for imperialism greatly diminishes.

in my comment below for how to make war unprofitable.

If war is indeed necessary, the government should first seize the capital, the industries, and labor to wage it.

Also, if things are so dire as to be killing people for the sake of the nation, we sure as hell don't need resources diverted to selling armaments to other countries.

in War Is a Racket.

In the booklet's penultimate chapter, Butler recommended three steps to disrupt the war racket:

1. Making war unprofitable. Butler suggests that the means for war [capital, industry, and labor] should be "conscripted" [or "nationalized"] before those who would fight the war.

2. Acts of war to be decided by those who fight it. He also suggests a limited referendum to determine if the war is to be fought. Eligible to vote would be those who risk death on the front lines.

3. Limitation of militaries to self-defense. For the United States, Butler recommends that the Navy be limited, by law, to operating within 200 miles of the coastline, and the Army restricted to the territorial limits of the country, ensuring that war, if fought, can never be one of aggression.

will be stopped as German imperialism was - twice - last century: by a coalition of countries bombing/nuking the crap out of it, then keeping the country occuppied for generations by the victors to ensure it doesn't try to take over the world again.

Why else do you think Corbyn and the Brits are doing all they can to distance themselves from the Indespensible Exceptional Nation and its fellow (for now) NATO travellers?

Don't want to feel this pessimistic, but I feel this pessimistic. Have ever since the US went live with its "defensive" missile launch system in Romania.

ticket, allowing people to vote down ticket. So they would still vote, just not for Prez. Or it could have just targeted the duopoly, the repub and dem parties allowing voting for third parties. The purpose could have been to protest the two duopoly candidates, or the two candidates and the two major parties, or it could protest the political system itself, my preference.
Like I said, too late now, that would have required a lot of organization. We'll get what we get, maybe what we deserve.

is the most powerful force propelling the nation on a downward trajectory. It serves as a nexus from which the plutocracy controls many aspects of American life, and all aspects of America's foreign policy. Imperialism is the linchpin upon which most of America's monstrous politico/corporate establishment depends. Our transnational corporations rely on US imperial strategies and actions to safeguard and expand their investments. Our Congresscritters rely in the MIC for lucrative boondoggles to benefit the districts they represent. And so on. Even our Presidents are beholden to a "deep state" for the flow of information available to them - a deep state that is wholly dedicated to the maintenance and expansion of the US Empire.

So, to oppose American imperialism is to oppose much else besides. It would strike at the very heart of the beast that our Government has become. Where's the St. George to slay a dragon like that?

I perused some of it when you first brought up the September No War 2016 conference in DC at your Global Revolution Center blog and . . . I dunno. Lots of pie-in-the-sky stuff in there (revamping the UN, the Security Council).

Also, from what I'm reading at their site today, they are planning a civil disobedience action, including arrests for those wishing to go that far, at the Pentagon the Monday after the conference breaks up on Sunday.

Some interesting comments also. Struggling to find an answer. Doing some of those things whether feasible or not the question is how. That's where we're stuck. How to we do this?

This should have been organized as a fifty state affair at every state capital. In D.C. it just gets lost in the fog.

Time to delve in a little deeper into what they're up to though.

It's sad that Americans do not understand what's going on with our foreign policy. It needs to be discussed. A republican friend of mine hates Trump; won't vote D. He's looking at Johnson and talked about the largesse of the DOD, specifically overseas expenditures. It was wonderful to hear. He's one of those low-tax Rs. So that's one (huge) virtue of the libertarians - military is for defense of borders and only that. The other virtue of them is legal drugs; no more war on drugs. Say goodbye to 3/4 of our prisoners. I'm talking about theoretical libertarians. The way I see it is that Republicans took over the libertarians and bury these two planks.
