Fall is my favorite time of year. Amount of work decreases, harvest is in the barn, freezer and pantry. The challenge of winter weather is weeks away. Why work so hard? Why not. Most people I know are happier when busy. It is discovering the tasks we find satisfying and are able to perform that takes time.

Regenerative agriculture is the closest philosophy to my management goals.

Farm Report

The farm is a 600 by 1200 ft rectangle I moved on to 15 years ago. It seems about every 5 years the major focus of why I live here changes.

Originally bought because I was tired of the police stopping by my previous home and asking to search the property with their dogs. Wanted to find the "stranger" someone reported running across the field after robbing the convenience store, which might be hiding in one of the out buildings. The robberies never showed up in the local paper. It happened 3 times in 2001 and decided to move away from the city that had surrounded the property. Became concerned they would come on the place without my knowledge and shoot one of my dogs. Australian shepherds do not generally run up all wiggly and happy to see who just stepped out of their car.

Plenty of rose hips for the wild birds this winter.
soe hips.jpg

Checking the headgate. Only one more cycle across the fields and then winterize the system.
soe headgate.jpg

My junk, nature's creation.
soe pipe.jpg

One of my best stock dogs ever. He is 13 now and still ready to help out with moments notice. Part of the changes this year is teaching the cattle and sheep to come when called without needing a dog, bribes provided.
soe dog.jpg

Always had to travel to the mountains for fall color. Have been planting trees to enjoy the color change at home in the future.

Even more fail at math

Not a good morning. I cannot believe Bernie is recruiting for Ds here, he is either delusional or devious. Not good.

Just over half of California students failed to meet English standards based on spring 2017 standardized test results released Wednesday, a performance that remained essentially flat compared to the previous year.

Students performed even worse on math tests, with nearly two-thirds falling short, according to the California Department of Education.
...
“We can’t call ourselves a progressive state and leave low-income students and students of color behind,” said Ryan Smith, executive director of The Education-Trust West, a research and advocacy organization.

Yes We Can! Common Core, now with more private Charters because what else is there?

Thanks Obama, enjoy your millions while folks die on the streets of infectious disease for lack of shelter and sanitation. Welcome to California, land of one hundred billionaires. "That's the system" says Jerry Brown. "We're capitalists" says Nancy Pelosi. The worst kind, that is the company Bernie keeps despite all his TV talk and book touring. No better than Rs who take money from big donors. One good apple don't unspoil the whole sorry bunch.

Yet another smooth greedy bastard gets away with murder, how exceptional.

@eyo Several times IRL had the opportunity, but guilted about theft. I would really like a scope to sort bugs under. Binocular. LED illumination.

I take it sheep play King of the Mountain.

Many last cuts of fields are now rolled, some bagged. Cornell is a decent caretaker of a large percentage of the property in the county. No clue about who does the rest or
whether it's a cooperative effort. Even the rolling equipment must co$t hugely. I don't think I have ever witnessed bagging.

So much for this country girl. Happy Thorsday!

@riverlover my 'scope plugs in to a computer and needs software to function. I think it is the only thing I ever purchased on ebay, it was really cheap directly from China. No brand, the package and CD say "Digital Microscope" that is all. It only does 60X magnification, 640x480 photos which is fine for me.

Life embiggened (a perfectly cromulent word) is fascinating, I love it. At first I just wanted to see what was in cannabis flowers, after that I wanted to see what is in everything magnified. Haven't looked at lettuce buds yet.

@eyo Not looking forward to that this year. My driveway is still gullywashed and the Bobcat went away.

"my" oaks are still green. Thus begins the raking debate internally. No one external but me to react. And I love compost heaps. Awaiting a delivery of garlic. Plants should work before sacrifice. First time experimenting with that. Still, plants in transport pots to ground or house. Can I plant a flowering quince under a hickory? Can I plant a cranberry under an oak?

advance their political agenda

The district attorney of Los Angeles County filed criminal charges this month against Ref Rodriguez, the school board president of the nation’s second-largest public school district. Accused of laundering money into his 2015 political campaign with the help of his cousin, Rodriguez faces three felony charges and 25 misdemeanors.

Peter Cunningham, executive director of Education Post, an education reform communications firm, penned an Los Angeles Times op-ed last week in defense of Rodriguez, saying he can’t understand how “these minor violations” of campaign finance law triggered criminal charges. Cunningham finds Rodriguez “humble, sincere, and polite” and says and that if the allegations are true, Rodriguez simply made a “rookie mistake” and should pay his fines. “If [Rodriguez] is forced to step down from the board, his prosecution could seriously undermine the reform agenda demanded by the voters of Los Angeles,” Cunningham argues. “It’s hard to avoid the conclusion that he got the book thrown at him simply because he was elected board president.”

@dkmich NOPE. California’s next presidential primary will be earlier

California last sought to correct its lack of impact in the primaries by shifting its vote to February in 2008.

Hillary Clinton beat Barack Obama in California, but he outlasted Clinton by peeling off a string of states. Still, it helped boost turnout among registered voters here to nearly 58 percent.

"When I say Democrat, you say Bernie." Don't say coat tails for DNC money, that would be bad/sad. Say money buys power for money instead, better?

Among the potential beneficiaries of the earlier primary are U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, rising Democratic stars who are often discussed as possible presidential candidates. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders has been active in the state early.

Can someone parse that for me? Active early for who? The millionaires? While you're at it, don't say super-delegates either. "There are so many things we could have done."

Sanders Rips GOP Health Plan; Crowd Chants ‘Run, Bernie, Run’

Earlier in the day Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, a candidate for governor, gave a full-throated endorsement for California’s bill and pledged to make universal health care a reality in the state if he wins the governorship in 2018. The nurses’ union endorsed his candidacy early.

“Because of your leadership, this state has never been closer to universal health care,” Newsom said. “I’ll make this crystal clear: If we can’t get it done next year, you have my firm and absolute commitment as your next governor I will lead the effort to get it done.”
...
“Look they’ve had a long time to provide for healthcare and they’ve really done a really, really horrendous job. ” Castillo said. “We believe that Bernie Sanders – Senator Sanders – is a tremendous leader and we are committed to go all the way with him.”

Newsom promised to go all the way to "if not next year" and beyond, that made me laugh and agree with the "really really horrendous job" part.

of land was he able to buy fifteen years ago in New Zealand. It's a nice video, but let's say someone today want to buy a piece of land the way this guy had done fifteen years ago, how long would it take one person to build a farm of his style?

Where I am right now (in HI) a piece of land like one acre coded as ag land would costs around 400,000.00 dollars without anything on it (cleared land without any trees anymore) or too much on it (you have to clear jungle like completely overgrown pieces of land, which is a costly thing to do in manners that you save the valuable trees and clear out the rest). There are three types of climate zones here, one is tropical and wet, the other is a little cooler and a little dryer up country, the third one is hotter and dryer towards the south of the island.

You have huge issues with water. Either it rains so much that you can do water catchment systems, but it makes vegetable production difficult (too wet and too hot), the other areas or you would have to buy water from private parties or steal water from the few springs and waterfall river areas.

So, nice things are said in the film, but where do you find that land to restore paradise in? At a price a little guy can buy?

All I can see is that corporate CEOs invest huge amounts of money in the land and do anything with it BUT restoring paradise and sharing it with the people, who would like to work the land, live of its produce and sharing their products with other local "little people'.

Just saying. Roaming cattle? Where? The closest I can remember in the northern part of Germany are grazing sheep near the coastal areas behind the "Deiche" (Dikes).

@mimi although I have yet to look at real estate prices. Our summer-of-no-summer has passed and the heat wave of a few days seems to have broken.

Back to real estate: this place might go for $0.5 Million, but probably in the $300's. And you never visited from closer!

I hope you and son are doing well. Shock is a normal response. So we adapt.

@mimi
One just starts with where you are at at this place in time, it will never get easier. Regenerative agriculture is a process and approach of using what is around you to improve the soil and grow plants to harvest. Not continually buying stuff to maximize production. Learning the local climate, existing micro climates on a property and creating new micro climates. It can start with a few pots by a window, a suburban lot or an acreage. Done all three.

The farmer in the video has enough land to use livestock to assist with soil management and harvest grass, shrubs and trees. There are many places in the US livestock are fed using rotational grazing in pastures, including my small place. I do not have to run the lawn mower to keep the grass short.

How long does it take, forever it is a lifestyle not a finite goal. How long to grow a crop - depends on the crop. Salad vegetables a few weeks, fruit & nut trees a few years, livestock varies with the type and the condition of the feed source. Initial crops harvested might not be your favorite foods. Water is always an issue. The other variables include the condition of the land, experience of the person and how much help is available. More dollars means one can afford more help, also more likely to try non-necessary expensive solutions.

One can find the places all over the world. The cheapest acreages are generally run down farms, have small or old housing structures and are not close to the most desirable places to live. The place I am living now had been on the market for 12 month with no offers it looked so undesirable, dried up and ugly.

The original plan was to sell, move back to a suburban lot when the folks passed and the extra space was no longer needed. But have decided I like it here, now working on changes to make it my age in place residence when my physical strength makes it more challenging to do the outside work.

Finding methods to share is harder than rehabilitating and running the place. Most people I have run into have wanted to be entertained, given part of the harvest or need transportation. I do not have the extra time at this stage of my life, maybe in the future.

I spent the last two hours sitting on piece of land that has three structures on it. My son and his girlfriend rent the ground level one bedroom of the second structure for 1650.00 a month. Even if they split the rent, it's two much. So there is a piece of land adjacent to this lot that was never built on or used for agricultural purposes. It's full of banana trees, palm trees, coconuts, papaya and avocado trees all mingled up with man-height grass.

So I watched the guy with his kubota excavator, this little thingy in the middle:
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmYeJ-oq3Qw]
As I don't expect the c99p readers right now jump on the occasion and buy this piece of equipment, I dare to post this promotional video, as I couldn't find at the moment another image.
The kubots gets out trees, stumps, digs, moves earth etc. So getting all the brush out of a piece of land like this
64d949552256bc8cf76680d37e565657--project-place-maui.jpg
You can't see all the banana trees and palm trees, they are higher than the plants on the image. The land is in a tropical climate area of the island of Maui.

Anyhow, right besides me are the little pots and plants my son tries to grow some herbs and vegetables in on a shady little patio area. Of course to pay rent you work hard at very low hourly wages to do the landscape work for the rich folks' mansions of which are many around here, while the little people never can own the land to do their own farming.

Lots here are a long time on the market, if they don't have water meters. The waiting lists to get water meters is way over 1000. Sometimes people wait for ten years and more to get their water. As soon as land has a water meter the prices increase 30 to 40 percent. Some land is reserved for local, native Hawaiians. I think this is a bitter necessity for them, with all the celebrities and IT and banker guys buying out the land. One guy - CEO Larry Ellison just bought a whole island. Oprah has bought land like crazy here and hides in the jungle. Of course she doesn't grow the salads herself. I think Dr. Phil has to give her a stern lecture to get real and not be fake it. Clint Eastwood had land and a house here on which my son helped with construction work. He made millions selling it.

Willie Nelson at least made his restaurant "Charley's" a hang-out for music lovers. He and his sons

800px-Willie_and_Lukas_Nelson.jpg
are nice guys. Neill Young hangs out there.
2015-05-24_0014 (1).jpg

It's a lifestyle, yes, but not for many little people, who dream of farming their land.

So nothing against all your arguments, I do understand all of them and like them a lot. There came a guy here and did something like a TED talk, explaining to the listeners that here the land will always be expensive. Ok. I just wondered how much he got paid for that speech to tell us THAT. I think my son should get into the TED talk business...

seem to run right through winter, plus we get a fall/winter planting. I just ordered some perpetual spinach chard to try this winter in a couple of pots. Already planted some Napa Cabbage (6) and Spanish Onions (about 20, I think), all in pots. We also have a great number of Basil plants about a month old which need thinning and such.

This appears not to have posted this morning, so here it is.
