Sunday Open Thread: July 2 is World UFO Day

World History

On July 2, 1494, Spain ratified the The Treaty of Tordesillas. That is the infamous treaty that divided newly discovered non-European lands between Spain and Portugal. Nobody told the Pope, the Spaniards nor the Portuguese, that everything west of a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands (granted to Spain) would include everything east of said meridian (granted to Portugal) and vice-versa, because, duh, round. There were at least 3 Popes & 4 Papal bulls (actually, it was all bull) involved, none valid, all presumptious, foul and wrongful. Ah well, the evil that men do and all that ... .

On July 2, 1613, a British expedition from Virginia attacked Acadia (French) and burnt its capital, Port Royale.

On July 1823, Brazil won its freedom from Portugal

US History

On July 2, 1962, the first Wal-Mart opened
On July 2, 1964, LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964

Another good development in the evolution of Mueller's team. This guy already knows a lot about Trumps legal issues.

Link to NBC story on this

Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Goldstein of the Southern District of New York will join Mueller’s team, the official said.
Goldstein was former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara's top public corruption prosecutor and kept the same role under Acting U.S Attorney Joon Kim.

He's known for multiple successful prosecutions of New York lawmakers on corruption charges. He's also highly regarded in the Southern District and across Justice for those prosecutions, his thoroughness in investigations, and high level of success.

First Wal-mart on this day in '62...then the Civil Rights bill 7/2/64. Seems ironic.

Hey eyo, the intercept has a piece saying the CA single payer was always a loser until there was a constitutional vote.

They’re perfectly aware that SB562 is a shell bill that cannot become law without a ballot measure approved by voters. Rather than committing to raising the millions of dollars that would be needed to overcome special interests and pass that initiative, they would, apparently, rather deceive their supporters, hiding the realities of California’s woeful political structure in favor of a morality play designed to advance careers and aggrandize power.

A different and interesting take.

Hope you all have a good one. More rain expected here...what a pleasure after last summer's drought!

“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

@Lookout thanks that covers it pretty well doesn't it? I still want to add my own rant.

It’s because you can’t do the funding without help from the voters, because of California’s fatal addiction to its perverse form of direct democracy. The blame, in other words, lies with ourselves.

I did read the "healthcare" bill as proposed, and the "Executive Summary". Yes, they would actually have to make some new laws and a framework for implementation. The voters would have to vote in yet another "special election" why not. SB562 called for a 15% payroll tax as funding if I recall correctly, so right away I imagined low wage earners bringing home only 50% of their meager earnings... for what now? Totally corrupt bunch of doctor and pharma lobbyists as far as I can tell.

It used to be a politician's job to make or change laws for stuff that people voted FOR, not against. These days, some billionaire comes along and pays for enough signatures to get initiatives on the ballot, and it is called citizen participation. Please, no. But legal weed! All being crammed through the same corrupt taxation and distribution system known as the ABC. With Track and Trace coming, can't wait for the government to know what everyone is consuming, right down to the DNA. Don't say Monsanto and I won't say "I told ya so" in five years (or less).

@eyo Just saw a FB posting that they, all-powerful corporation that reigns over all of the seeds in the US and GMOs!!, also invented Teflon. Nope, wrong. I corrected. That was Dupont. My father spent a short time there as a chemist and later developed bladder cancer.

July 2, 1897 a date that will live in iinfamy. Nicola Tesla got shafted and it took like 20 years to fix.
Correction: The Supreme Court ruled in 1943... 6 months after Tesla's death.
Have a nice day all. I'm expecting a meh day...but we'll see.

Tories don't want an election now

The Opinium survey for The Observer found that Ms May’s personal approval ratings are currently at minus 20 per cent, while Mr Corbyn is 24 points ahead coming in at 4 per cent.
The Labour leader's lead over Ms May also translates through to his newly invigorated party which is now polling at 45 per cent with the Tories behind on 39 per cent.

What really caught my eye was this headline from the right-wing, Corbyn-hating Telegraph.

Tory has-beens and rebellious ministers are playing into Jeremy Corbyn's hands
