(Someone tells the truth about ‘Liberals’): A Silent Coup in Italy

This article makes an important statement on how liberal Liberals really aren’t. It even contains an absolutely hypocritical (but true) statement from The Clinton Creature lackey Paul Krugman.

A Silent Coup in Italy

Italian President Sergio Mattarella on Sunday barred a coalition of euroskeptic parties from forming a government despite a clear mandate handed down by voters earlier this spring. The move amounted to nothing less than a bloodless coup d’état and laid bare the naked contempt for the vox populi among the Italian and European liberal establishment. Talk about liberalism without democracy.

The populist Five Star Movement (M5S) won the largest single share of ballots in March’s general election, followed by the hard-right League led by Matteo Salvini. Founded by a comedian, the M5S blends whimsical environmentalism–zero fossil fuels by 2050!–with hard-line anti-immigration and euroskeptic policies. The League, meanwhile, is a more conventional right-wing nationalist party in the mold of the National Front in France.

Yet Mattarella blocked M5S and the League from carrying out voters’ will, ostensibly over the coalition’s choice of economy minister, Paolo Savona, a former Bank of Italy official who has called for a “plan B to get out of the euro if necessary.” Savona has also compared German domination of the European Union with the Nazi occupation—an ahistorical and, indeed, vile remark, to be sure, but reason enough to undo the results of a general election?

*

Mattarella’s decision outraged even Paul Krugman, no friend of right-wing nationalists. “This is really awful,” the New York Times columnist tweeted. “You don’t have to like the populist parties who won a clear electoral mandate to be appalled at the attempt to exclude them from power . . . Faith in the single currency trumps democracy? Really? European institutions already suffering lack of legitimacy due to democratic deficit. This will make things much worse.”

Krugman is right (there, I said it). For starters, there is no guarantee that voters won’t return the same coalition to power in a do-over. The latest polls suggest that Salvini’s League has gained support in recent weeks. Mattarella, in other words, may have only strengthened Salvini’s hand. Yet if the League and M5S fare worse in a snap election this fall, the effect would be still more catastrophic for the long-term health of Italian democracy. The message to voters would be poisonous: Your votes are appreciated, but your political class answers to a higher electorate of investors and bondholders.

This all sounds so familiar, doesn’t it?

Anyway, this silent coup is having a global affect.

Dow tumbles nearly 400 points on Italy fears and US-China trade tensions

The Dow plunged more than 392 points, or 1.6%, on fears about political turmoil in Italy and renewed trade uncertainty between the United States and China. It was the worst day for the Dow since April 24.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq slipped 1.1% and 0.5% apiece.

Italy is headed for new elections, and investors worry the result could throw the European Union into turmoil. Investors soured on Italy's debt, demanding higher yields in return for taking on added risk.

The tension in Italy spread to US markets. In Wall Street's worst-case scenario, Italy, the third-largest economy in the European bloc, would vote to leave the euro.

"It's got the earmarks of a disgruntled Italy," said Arthur Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley FBR. "We've gotten to the point now where it's catching people's attention."

Sorry, but part this made me laugh:

“It's got the earmarks of a disgruntled Italy,"

Ah! Now I see. The Italian people are ‘disgruntled’.

If they don’t watch out, the next stage will be total outrage.

And then things get really bloody for everyone...

You think the uber's would figure out the lessons of history, but they sure seem determined to place themselves against the wall.

Because that's the inevitable result of this if anything other than the will of the people is implemented.

I think they are just hoping for later rather than sooner, but sooner is coming quicker than they think.

I can feel it every time I leave the house, people are largely unhappy, even if they don't know what or who is to blame even the most obtuse know something isn't right.

That leads to uncertainty, uncertainty leads to anxiety, anxiety to fear and fear to anger (once they fear they have nothing left to lose).

Think of all America as Palestine with walled off pocket of "Israels" here and there...

It could happen...

disparity in information, organization, and arms will protect them.

I am not entirely sure they are incorrect. I do know that people who say "the little guy always wins in the end" are not thinking about these disparities.

@Alphalop be an understatement, to be underlined in red:

Think of all America as Palestine with walled off pocket of "Israels" here and there...

Maybe we need another Bibi in the WH to keep the Gaza's in line--a few "rubber" bullets every so often should ameliorate the populistic anger.

I actually would argue with the claim, in the following quotes, of China and Germany 'kowtowing to Iran' in backing away from an unreliable bully out for global dominance over everyone else, and turning to more reasonable partners not known for ditching agreements in favour of (at best) abuse and threats... but (edit: what appears to be those safeguarding the interests of) criminal (edit: international financial institutions) this blatantly overriding all semblance of democracy again?

Just like the US PTB, clawing at fleeing victims in mutual heavy-handed panic as the (edit: current) globe-spanning Empire of financial control crumbles down the drain it is.

Let's everybody go back to being sovereign countries and maybe we can all have some democracies, while the financial giants keep their 'austerity' to and for themselves and the global war machine gets broken down into plowshares to bury the giant corporations for fertilizer.

Sick & tired of US foreign policy, Germany is pushed into the open arms of China

... In the weeks since, Merkel has certainly proved that this was no idle threat. The German chancellor has made trips to both Russia and China, and the outcomes of those meetings appear to suggest a complete restructuring of the balance of power in Europe and Asia respectively.
China and Germany see eye to eye

Just this Thursday, China has already said it would “open its door wider” to German businesses after giving Merkel a warm reception. Both China and Germany have a common interest in defeating Trump’s plan to kill trade surpluses that countries have with the United States, as they are both equally affected by Trump’s threats. Each time Trump opens his mouth, it seems that European and Asian businesses are instantly affected. Germany is the largest auto exporter to the US out of any European country, and is China’s biggest European trading partner which was worth $179 billion just last year alone.

Both Merkel and Macron tried their hand at persuading the Trump administration not to abandon the Iranian nuclear deal completely. The leaders even issued a joint statement with British Prime Minister Theresa May, someone whose hawkish attitude towards Iran should not go unnoticed. Not surprisingly, according to Reuters, German officials have said that “Trump’s America First’ trade policy, his administration’s professed disdain for the World Trade Organization, as well as his withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, have pushed China and Germany into closer alignment.” ...

... You can only go so far serving the interests of Saudi Arabia and Israel while ignoring strong European states who would rather ink financial deals than turn Iran into a glass crater, a strong point of difference between Merkel and say, newly appointed US national security adviser John Bolton.

The lifting of sanctions on Iran already led to an increase in trade between Germany and Iran from €2.7 billion in 2014 to €3.5 billion last year. It is also worth noting that Iran will now start accepting euros for its oil in an attempt to not only avoid the US dollar, but in a move that will directly threaten it. This topic is probably best suited for another article, but it is definitely something worth keeping an eye on – and will most likely only bolster Germany’s resolve to protect Iran.

Either way, Germany and China have both agreed to stick to the Iran deal. Think for a second what this means: John Bolton openly warned European companies and countries against continuing business with Iran, stating that they could be targeted by sanctions. The newly appointed ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, also immediately warned Germany directly that German companies must halt their business activities with Tehran or face sanctions. The German-Chinese announcement also came just after Iran’s leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, issued a set of demands of its own, stating that the Europeans also could not be trusted.

Germany and China have essentially given the US the political middle finger in response, and arguably kowtowed to Iranian interests instead. ...

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.
