A few hundred South Dallas residents, mostly black, flooded Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to oppose a planned demonstration by a mostly white group that routinely protests outside mosques.

Both sides were armed.

Dallas police stood guard on a funeral home’s roof as black counterprotesters swarmed the parking lot of Eva’s House of Bar-B-Q, vowing to defend their streets and chanting “black power.”

I am a fervent supporter of mass nonviolent resistance to domination. Under certain circumstances, this resistance is expressed in the streets outside of the corridors of power, as led by MLK and Gandhi.

On other occasions, as in when armed fascists gather to intimidate your local community's right to worship freely, an armed perimeter is the only way to resist nonviolently.

Progressives have to decide which side they are on. The time for coffee shop progressivism is very short now.

These folks are not shouting at, or cowering before, the darkness. They lit a candle. You may be frightened by the big-ass candle they lit, but that candle scared the crap out of the racists on the ground :=) Some idiot club of racists called BAIR has been enjoying terrorizing black Muslim folk at worship. They got served notice this weekend that their fun is over.

Everything I need to know, I really did learn in kindergarten. The only way to stop a bully is to face up to him and make him understand that he might beat me, but it will be no fun for him and he will pay for the opportunity to beat me. I've never been bullied. I've paid dearly in blood and pain and loss of promotions and opportunities for being able to say that. But I cannot be myself if I allow others to bully me. Fuck. That. Shit.

I wrote yesterday about my main concern about progressives. Tough times call for tough minds. I explained that in human biology, the mind is connected to the spine. A weak mind dissolves the spine. My major concern about c99 is that it is a coffee shop filled with people shouting at the darkness. That is useless and a waste of time and energy. If you folks don't learn how to become tough-minded, tough people for tough times, the fascists will eat you alive. Time is short. Tick-tick. Tick-tick. Tick-tick.

I look forward to your responses. What you say in response will show your character. It will show whether you are tough-minded or weak-minded. We will see who is who in the zoo.

It bugs me when they try to put laws into place allowing churches to arm themselves and it bugs me when people bring guns to a protest.

Having Armed people on opposite sides shouting at each other is VERY dangerous, period. All it takes is one trigger happy asshole to start a war.

For some strange reason, American progressives are scared witless of the racists. I grew up in apartheid South Africa. My Boer ancestors and the Afrikaners in South Africa would scare the living daylights out of your racists. Your racists have always been the MAJORITY of the population. The Afrikaners enacted far worse racism, racist laws, racist everything while always being the MINORITY of the population. When I visited the U.S. I found your racists all to be Mussolini-types - very amusing in their pretend-toughness. Sure, it's easy to do horrible things to black folk when you are in the MAJORITY. Try doing it for HUNDREDS of years while being the MINORITY population.

Believe me when I tell you that American racists are cowards. Whenever they have faced determined resistance they have folded and run away.

Read, mark and inwardly absorb this truth: Only determined mass resistance has ever stopped racists fascists. Ask Desmond Tutu. Ask Nelson Mandela. (Blessed be they forever.) Ask the masses of black South Africans who faced down the worst racists in the world after WWII.

Buy running shoes. Buy a water bottle. Buy a sun hat. Get some exercise. Toughen your minds. Look for ways to get into the street and help the youth take back your country.

I really would like to think that it will make the fools take a good look and say "What Have I Done?"

It assumes an ability to see consequences, which I don't see in a lot of the profit minded. I see an executive thinking "Hey, Another group we can sell weapons to!"

I've been calling for restrictions on weapons for years, because we have a lot of fools with a lot of guns. And I think that there's a kind of courage that only shows up when somebody owns a lot of guns and has been watching a lot of propaganda. Think "Dutch Courage." Only I'd call it "American Courage".

Consider the disproportionally large amount of minorities that have served in wars since the Viet Nam era. and the level of training they have, in comparison to these open carry racists, compensating for their lack of testicular fortitude, whose service was probably spent in the 2nd Armchair Battalion, of the 1st Chickenhawk Brigade...

California used to have lax gun laws. Once Blacks started open-carrying (and visiting the State House while legally open carrying) St. Reagan and the state ledge decided that strict gun laws for everyone were a damned good thing.

You see, there is no sure thing in life. Every choice has pros and cons, risks and rewards.

Allowing armed racists free reign, as you folks do now, has a guaranteed outcome. The ongoing increasing slaughter of your innocents. Why? There are no risks for the racists. None.

Resisting armed racists with an armed perimeter carries risks. Sure it does. How do you minimize the risk? With training and discipline. The men and women on that perimeter showed absolute grim determination NOT TO YIELD. The local police, knowing this, were out in full force between the two groups, separating them physically. The risk was minimal.

Now, picture that mosque and community without that armed perimeter. The cops wouldn't have shown up!!! By mass resistance, and showing it was prepared to defend itself to the death, the community of South Dallas FORCED the police to do their job. And the racists huffed and puffed and couldn't blow down their house.

Everything I need to know, I learned in kindergarten. TY, Robert Fulghum, TY.

because we have different overall views here.

I personally think that it's shameful the police wouldn't have shown up to a crowd of racists wielding weapons, because to me it's a basic violation of the social contract to threaten others.

I just feel that the potential harm is greater than the benefit here. If somebody had fired, it would have been all the justification certain people would have needed to turn the whole scene into a bloodbath.

I think there's more people licking their lips at the thought of having a justification for their violence than we acknowledge. And next time, it isn't going to be bringing weapons to a protest. Next time, these assholes are going to go back to the old American model of isolating and murdering somebody who stood up to them. Because that's how cowards think, and if they don't have the law on their side, they'll do everything they can to make the law irrelevant.

Don't mean to be a cynic, and don't mean to stand against one side arming themselves. I'm against EVERYBODY in this scenario being armed. It's an escalation which will not end well. Reminds me a bit of the old M.A.D. strategy for preventing WWIII. It's not a strategy, it's a horrible spasm.

I heard the story the other day about Dr King in the 16 st church in Birmingham with the white citizens council marching around them. He said something to the effect of "If you can't love them, then we don't have a movement." I've learned not to hate. I still strive to love those that foment hate. I am nonviolent and will stay so.

Defense differs from offense. Even Buddhist believe in the need for a warrior.

than most progressives do because of my own history. Your point about the buddhist position on defensive warriors is well noted. Gandhi himself said that he supported violence, as does bernie, as the very last resort to Defence - never offence.

Gandhi also said this: "With a coward, you can do nothing." Gandhi said that courage was the first requirement in mass nonviolent resistance. When you ask folks to sit down in front of armed soldiers and police and refuse to move, you had better have weeded out the cowards beforehand.

I agree wholeheartedly that no action should be taken without love. All the great spiritual teachers of the world taught this and those among us today, teach this as well. I'm a post-Christian (still a cultural Anglican, seeking the divine in the beauty all around us all the time). My guide in how to conduct mass nonviolent resistance to domination is the recently deceased progressive Christian theologian Walter Wink. He was an American who did much work teaching nonviolent resistance in fascist, U.S.-supported regimes in South America and in apartheid South Africa. Wink taught folks how to do NVR from out of love, after having overcome hatred within ourselves. (I do love my racist family and racist friends, even as I call a spade a fucking shovel.)

Wink spoke of the domination system that he called "The Powers That Be," and how to overcome it through the "third way" of NVR. His most well-known work is a trilogy on this theme and the most accessible version is a summary he created for us regular folk called by the same title.

However, if you feel any moral obligation to protect you family and your community from hate filled armed intruders, then arming yourself is a powerful response to those intruders.
If you think for one second that these hateful people coming in don't hope to start a confrontation that would allow them to justify opening fire on unarmed people, to 'kill some niggers' then I fear I'll never reach you.
If those intruders turn tail and run (as they did) then the brandishing of arms to signal the intent to defend with force, resolved the situation perfectly.
People will think twice about opening fire on you if they know you'll be firing back at them.

I stand with the black folks on this one. They don't have to die or live in fear for the sake of non-violence.

Reality sucks, violence is a reality, I abhor violence.
I will however use violence in the defense of myself, my family, and to oppose violence against others.
I don't own a gun but I would use one, if it was the right thing to do.

Anyway, sorry bout the rant Bollox, the situation is kind of a trigger for me. You see, it took me many years to finally learn that the best way to stop bullies was to punch them in the face.

And I was so afraid of getting killed if I fought back, that I just didn't. That made it worse, of course...in the third grade, I had a flock that would follow me home from school. They would punch and hit, and I would turn my back. One guy would run up from behind, jump up and kick me in the back, and knock me down. This went on, unknown to my mother until one day I got knocked cold with a lunchbox, woke up in the Principal's Office, and had to get stitches. She put us (my sister and I) in another school.

It was purely by accident that I discovered that standing up to them was effective, and easy. I was in yet another school, Catholic School, 8th grade, new guy. All these kids had grown up together from birth. Gus was the bully, but I didn't know it. We were playing basketball...he had the ball, lost it somehow, I got it and didn't give it right back to him like I was supposed to. All I did was stand there and hold the ball, and he melted.

I was very small until 5th grade. Very small and sick a lot. The doctors said I had pancreatitis and a 'right blow in the right place' could be fatal.
So I learned to run fast and to always be aware of my surroundings. Smile
(there's an evolutionary lesson in this I believe).
I didn't get caught too much but I know what it's like to be surrounded up against a fence and beat on until they got bored.
Once I had to go up the tree to get away but my little sister (she was 3 at the time) came out swing a mop and gave me time to get into the house. Ah ,,all the good old memories eh?
Thank god for 5th grade. I was suddenly as big as everyone else. So day one the baddest bully from last year went at me.
So I put him in a head lock, raised my fist and told him 'Don't F with me no more or I'll punch your lights out!'.
That was the end of the bullying for that year. I thought I'd be fine going forward. At the time it didn't occur to me that people would beat you up because you wore your hair long, as I learned later to be true.
In any case, there are countless stories, as you know.
I've only actually punched one person. I had to do it, he was too drunk and too aggressive, and the girl was screaming for help, it was really the only choice I had.

I'm very much against violence, with good cause, but some times you have to punch them.
I wish the world was different.

I'm not sure what you expect from C99, and believe you're portraying the readers/writers here in an unfair light. Some people, whether here at C99, or marching in protest, or standing with a gun, or donating to a candidate --- some people do what they are able or capable of --- and, unfortunately, some people do nothing at all --- it's a choice --- and thank God I live in a country where I still have the freedom to choose! You know what I'm trying to say here mate --- I'm not good at trying to express myself in writing.

Here is an excellent conversation between the rapper Killer Mike and Bernie Sanders -- it's a lengthy conversation, but well worth the time --- don't know the minute mark, but they have an excellent exchange about guns and gun control.

There's lots to do, lots to talk about, but we must not forget that love is the force that binds us together!

Gerritt, I loved your comment about the cowardly majority-bullies compared to the tougher minority bullies in the other USA (Union of South Africa). Common sense seems to be inserter supply as time passes here in America. For every action "there is an equal and opposite reaction"--Sir Isaac Newton. But Werner Heisenberg (good Nazi that he was) realized the Einsteinium time-space relativity offered a different dichotomy. That the action of an observer on an observed, changed the observed. Niels Bohr took that one step further, rightly reflecting that the act of observation changes the observer.
So, in the modern non-Newtonian world, the posited dichotomy of "peace versus war" has been replaced by an infinite number of choices instead of two. So "arming the citizenry" (however justified or not) poses a likely Heisenberg-Bohr outcome: i.e., anything can happen. In a world where we progressives in which peace is the ultimate good (and a good for which we should not stop striving for), we need to alert ourselves to the fact that having two armed groups face-off against each other results in a non-violent ending is not inevitable--it is damn lucky. Remember the shot that that changed the world at Lexington MA. Or the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. In a world of smoldering, but steadily increasing rage, all it takes to trigger total war is a single shot from a single gun. We are so CLOSE to violent revolution in this country, that most people don't know it--it's called "denial". Bernie talks about a peaceful, political Revolution--and I strongly support Bernie's call; but for you "tough-minded", you must realize that we are coming closer to violent confrontation on our streets, in our cities.

And I see it more as a question of self-defense. I have NO problem with that...While I am not as young as I used to be, nor as spry, I would still be amongst the first to man the barricades if it meant protecting my neighbors and friends from outside aggressors.

It is the going and looking for trouble that I have an issue with.

the distinction very helpfully for us all. Here's how I state it:

On offense - mass nonviolent resistance to domination - violence, especially guns, is NEVER an option.

On defense - of body, family, property, and local community - violence, especially guns, is always ONLY the last option.

The good folks of South Dallas showed us that defensive option. IMO, they are well on the way now in solving their local particular problem with racists. Now, if some angry young South Dallas residents go out to look for trouble with the racists, that would disastrous.
