A Quilt for Mother Emanuel -- Messages Needed!
This is what the Mother Emanuel star quilt looked like before I started writing in the messages. Out of 200 needed, there are just 30 to go – will you help us with a message so we can begin to assemble it?
On June 18 of last year, a racially motivated mass murder occurred in an historic church in Charleston, SC. Emanuel A.M.E. Church has weathered a lot over the years – but the murder in the church sanctuary of nine people, including the pastor who was also a sitting Senator in the SC legislature, was horrific.
This massacre was an effort to inspire terror, to make the people of the church feel unsafe and isolated. It did not work as perhaps it was intended… The congregation publicly forgave the murderer.
I believe in the power of words, for good or ill. This is the principal behind community quilts – loving, supportive words, once thought of, are out there working, in perpetuity. Would you like to give a few words, something that would fit in a diamond of this star, to support the people of Mother Emanuel? Something that can hang in a public space in the church, to remind everyone that they are NOT alone and that they have support all across this country. We need 29 more messages to proceed. (I will update this number as messages come in.) We would like to get this quilt done before the anniversary of the crime. Your kindness in being a part of the project is most appreciated.

your message! Star quilts are tricky -- there is a set number of diamonds in this pattern and we cannot put it together until all the messages are written in and heat set for permanence. Messages need to be succinct, please -- there isn't a lot of room in the diamonds.
If possible, I would like to include your State or town. So far, we have messages from the following States: Texas, California, Michigan, Illinois, Florida, Idaho, New York, Delaware, Kansas, Virginia, New Mexico, Massachusetts, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Arizona, Georgia, Ohio, Washington, Oregon, Utah, Maine, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Indiana, Colorado, Alabama, Missouri, Vermont, South Dakota, Montana, and Oklahoma. We also have one from Canada and one from France.

Energy
The energy in this quilt is amazing. Quite the buzz from all the heart felt messages. They have a lot of emotional power in them.
I can barely imagine the energy of the statements
as well as the work of you two designing and assembling it. I hope it gives the Congregation powerful comfort when it is received. I sent a hymn from their hymnal. Thank you both.
