President Zelenskyy has wizened up

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has figured out that NATO is prepared to fight Russia with the lives of every single willing Ukrainian. This has changed his perspective.

The leader of the war-torn nation was also reported to have gone a step ahead in mending fences with Vladimir Putin, stating that he was open to discussing the status of the two breakaway pro-Russian domains of Donetsk and Lugansk which Moscow insists are independent republics.

"I have cooled down regarding this question a long time ago after we understood that ... NATO is not prepared to accept Ukraine," Zelenskyy said in a televised interview. "The alliance is afraid of controversial things, and confrontation with Russia."

Zelenskyy also said Ukraine did not want to be a "country that is begging something on its knees" and he "did not want to be that President".

I got to admit, I'm liking this Zelensky guy.
Hopefully Putin will show some mercy.

on NATO membership and the Donbas and Crimea. Fights he has clearly LOST. Days ago.

However, in his speech to The House of Commons today he riffed on Churchill's We Will Fight Them on The Beaches.

You might want to rethink a leader who is ready to sacrifice others in a cause where NATO has already penciled in his replacement.

A former Ukrainian banker and spy who attended negotiations with President Putin’s delegation in Belarus has been killed amid reports that he was a double agent for the Russians.

Denis Kireyev, 45, a Ukrainian intelligence agent, took part in failed talks with Russia in the Belarusian city of Gomel last week before being killed later in the week, with conflicting accounts of his death.

The pro-Russian mayor of a Ukrainian city in the self-declared republic of Luhansk has reportedly been killed after being kidnapped from his home.

Volodymyr Struk, 57, who was mayor of Kreminna since 2020, suffered a “gunshot wound to the heart” after being abducted, according to Ukrainian news agency UNIAN.

On March 1, Struk’s wife told police he’d been kidnapped by men in camouflage.

“There is one less traitor in Ukraine. The mayor of Kremenna in Luhansk region, former deputy of Luhansk parliament was found killed,” Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, wrote in a post on Telegram.

He refused to honor the Minsk II agreement he negotiated and signed. Thousands of Russian speakers in Ukraine were exterminated as a result.

He allowed NATO to fluff him, then lied to the Ukrainian people when he said there would be no war. He encouraged Ukrainians to fight to the death after the invasion, when he could have revoked is bluff abut joining NATO. He pleaded with NATO to bring in deadly weapons to station along the Russian border when he knows it would make Ukraine the prime target in a geopolitical showdown.

Acting as a "fool" for NATO — even after NATO lied to him and betrayed him — hs provoked an economic confrontation that will profoundly damage the economies of the gaslit Anglo-American vassal states in Europe. The majority of the world that was not subject to the intense propaganda media of the neocon Neo-liberal new world order, did not support this brinksmanship-confrontation, including Israel and India and most of the Global South. But all the world is about to suffer a US (NATO West) energy and food price crisis that will kill millions, as the US freezes the dollar-demonited assets (treasuries) of any nation, business, or individual that does not obey its global edicts.

All sides will want Zelansky assassinated. He is a dead man walking.

Yes. The US is at-the-moment the Supreme Ruler of the World. The US controls all who live and trade in the dollar-denominated world — whether or not they signed onto this confrontation. NATO West must be obeyed.

When Putin heard about the draconian sanctions he gave only one order: "Stop all fertilizer exports immediately."

That's Russia's deadly response to NATO West.

Now the world must come to grips with this new world order. This is what AIPAC and Internet censorship hath wrought.

In reference to your prediction for Zelensky, it seems like any association with american political aims lead to a dead end, one way or another.

Regarding, "When Putin heard about the draconian sanctions he gave only one order: "Stop all fertilizer exports immediately” probably means further destruction of conserved land, not to mention the tragedy that will unfold because of dependence on commercial agriculture.

There have been some policy proposals as to steps that could be taken to free up additional cropland for cultivation. Professor Scott Irwin, an agricultural economist at the University of Illinois, has suggested that farmers be allowed to raise crops on some of the land currently under contracts for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), an idea that was also shared in a letter by the ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, Senator John Boozman (R, AR). Boozman’s letter also suggested suspending the current effort to attract additional cropland into the CRP, a general signup which closes on March 11. There is very little time for USDA to make any decisions on these proposals, as the deadline for signing up for crop insurance coverage for spring planted crops is a week away, on March 15th.

...but the time for action has long passed us by. China has just modernized ten of thousands of small farms and put agricultural science centers in every neighborhood, and Russia has always given every citizen their own land to farm — the dacha system. China has provided most small farmers with drone technology to better monitor their crops with less labor. Of course they have big ag, too. But they do not allow GMO crops and pesticides are highly regulated. Most food grown in Russia is organically grown

But the fact is, on this massively over-populated planet, the soil has been depleted of nutrients. There is a drastic demand for fertilizer, which is a fossil fuel product that Russia provides to the world. Without Russian fertilizer, the world would starve. Russia has been gearing up to become a key supplier suppler of organic produce to the world. That is Putin's point about exporting fertilizer to nations who would cooperate in destroying Russia's economy and lining its borders with WMD and secret bio-labs producing weaponized pathogens.

If you are not aware of the hundreds of US bio-weapons labs surrounding both China and Russia read Dilyana's blog Arms Watch. She's an amazing reporter and has gathered remarkable documentation.

Years before Zelensky was elected; therefore, he neither negotiated nor signed the agreement. However, he did run for office on the promise to honor the agreement.

As Ihor Valeriyovych Kolomoyskyi's front man, Zelensky may expect to have a nice Swiss chateau and Swiss bank account waiting for him when he flees Ukraine. Or not if his patron decides that he didn't fulfill his contract.

And I am actually sympathetic to the terrible situation Zelansiy is entangled in. He came after the election meddling of 2016 on Hillary's behalf, although he did have a hand in the sabotage and money corruption that followed, leading up to Trump's impeachment.

Good times.

I don't know much about Valeriyovych Kolomoyskyi. What's in it for him? I see Zelansky in the witness protection program in the US, perhaps living next-door to the Skripals.

....over the self-destructive actions of the US neocons that are controlling Biden's International policies:

Empires often follow the course of a Greek tragedy, bringing about precisely the fate that they sought to avoid. That certainly is the case with the American Empire as it dismantles itself in not-so-slow motion.

Nobody thought that the postwar 1945-2020 world order would give way this fast. A truly new international economic order is emerging, although it is not yet clear just what form it will take. But the confrontation resulting from “prodding the Bear” with the U.S./NATO aggression against Russia has passed critical-mass level.

I am somewhat chagrined as I watch the speed at which this U.S.-centered financialized system has de-dollarized over the span of just a year or two. I thought that de-dollarization would be led by China and Russia moving to take control of their economies to avoid the kind of financial polarization that is imposing austerity on the United States.

Instead, U.S. officials are forcing Russia, China and other nations not locked into the U.S. orbit to see the writing on the wall and overcome whatever hesitancy they had to de-dollarize.

I had expected that the end of the dollarized imperial economy would come about by other countries breaking away. But that is not what has happened. U.S. diplomats themselves have chosen to end international dollarization, while helping Russia build up its own means of self-reliant agricultural and industrial production. For Russia, these sanctions had the same effect that protective tariffs would have had.

But the sanctions that block America’s NATO allies and other economic satellites from trading with Russia has become a catalyst that is driving much of the world away from the U.S./NATO orbit.

Rather than European, Near Eastern and Global South countries breaking away as they calculate their own long-term economic interests, America is driving them away.

Trying to force Russia to respond militarily and thereby look bad to the rest of the world is turning out to be a stunt aimed simply at ensuring Europe contribute more to NATO, buy more U.S. military hardware and lock itself deeper into trade and monetary dependence on the United States. The instability that this has caused is turning out to have the effect of making the United States look as threatening as Russia is claimed to be by the NATO West.

.

Hudson's article, The American Empire Self-Destructs, is a worthy read, wherein Hudson discusses the unique elements of US-style geopolitics, the mainstream NATO-media, and the “Two Minutes of Hate” news.

then he must have done SOMETHING right.

He refused to honor the Minsk II agreement he negotiated and signed. Thousands of Russian speakers in Ukraine were exterminated as a result.

That's not true. There was no mass extermination of Russian speakers in the last couple years.

He allowed NATO to fluff him, then lied to the Ukrainian people when he said there would be no war.

He did allow NATAO to fluff him, but his guess of there being no war was a reasonable guess. It caught most people by surprise.

He pleaded with NATO to bring in deadly weapons to station along the Russian border when he knows it would make Ukraine the prime target in a geopolitical showdown.

Well, yeh. Why would he not have done so?

Acting as a "fool" for NATO — even after NATO lied to him and betrayed him — hs provoked an economic confrontation that will profoundly damage the economies of the gaslit Anglo-American vassal states in Europe.

No, he didn't provoke it. Absolutely not. NATO did. Putin did.

Two months after local elections were held across Ukraine, residents of the small northern city of Konotop are expressing shock and dismay over the behavior of newly chosen Mayor Artem Semenikhin of the neo-Nazi Svoboda party.
According to reports, Semenikhin drives around in a car bearing the number 14/88, a numerological reference to the phrases “we must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children” and “Heil Hitler”; replaced the picture of President Petro Poroshenko in his office with a portrait of Ukrainian national leader and Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera; and refused to fly the city’s official flag at the opening meeting of the city council because he objected to the star of David emblazoned on it. The flag also features a Muslim crescent and a cross.
Svoboda, known as the Social-National Party of Ukraine until 2004, has been accused of being a neo-Nazi party by Ukrainian Jews and while party leaders have a history of making anti-Semitic remarks, their rhetoric has toned down considerably over the past years as they attempted to go mainstream.

Kinda hard to ignore.

pilger update, 7 years on:

WAR IN EUROPE AND THE RISE OF RAW PROPAGANDA
17 February 2022

Marshall McLuhan's prophecy that "the successor to politics will be propaganda" has happened. Raw propaganda is now the rule in Western democracies, especially the US and Britain

On matters of war and peace, ministerial deceit is reported as news. Inconvenient facts are censored, demons are nurtured. The model is corporate spin, the currency of the age. In 1964, McLuhan famously declared, "The medium is the message." The lie is the message now.

But is this new? It is more than a century since Edward Bernays, the father of spin, invented "public relations" as a cover for war propaganda. What is new is the virtual elimination of dissent in the mainstream.

The great editor David Bowman, author of The Captive Press, called this "a defenestration of all who refuse to follow a line and to swallow the unpalatable and are brave". He was referring to independent journalists and whistle blowers, the honest mavericks to whom media organisations once gave space, often with pride. The space has been abolished.

The war hysteria that has rolled in like a tidal wave in recent weeks and months is the most striking example. Known by its jargon, "shaping the narrative", much if not most of it is pure propaganda.

The Russians are coming. Russia is worse than bad. Putin is evil, "a Nazi like Hitler", salivated the Labour MP Chris Bryant. Ukraine is about to be invaded by Russia - tonight, this week, next week. The sources include an ex CIA propagandist who now speaks for the US State Department and offers no evidence of his claims about Russian actions because "it comes from the US Government".

The no-evidence rule also applies in London. The British Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss, who spent £500,000 of public money flying to Australia in a private plane to warn the Canberra government that both Russia and China were about to pounce, offered no evidence. Antipodean heads nodded; the "narrative" is unchallenged there. One rare exception, former prime minister Paul Keating, called Truss's warmongering "demented".

Truss has blithely confused the countries of the Baltic and Black Sea. In Moscow, she told the Russian foreign minister that Britain would never accept Russian sovereignty over Rostov and Voronezh - until it was pointed out to her that these places were not part of Ukraine but in Russia. Read the Russian press about the buffoonery of this pretender to 10 Downing Street and cringe.

This entire farce, recently starring Boris Johnson in Moscow playing a clownish version of his hero, Churchill, might be enjoyed as satire were it not for its wilful abuse of facts and historical understanding and the real danger of war.

Vladimir Putin refers to the "genocide" in the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine. Following the coup in Ukraine in 2014 - orchestrated by Barack Obama's "point person" in Kyiv, Victoria Nuland - the coup regime, infested with neo-Nazis, launched a campaign of terror against Russian-speaking Donbas, which accounts for a third of Ukraine's population.

Overseen by CIA director John Brennan in Kyiv, "special security units" coordinated savage attacks on the people of Donbas, who opposed the coup. Video and eyewitness reports show bussed fascist thugs burning the trade union headquarters in the city of Odessa, killing 41 people trapped inside. The police are standing by. Obama congratulated the "duly elected" coup regime for its "remarkable restraint".

In the US media the Odessa atrocity was played down as "murky" and a "tragedy" in which "nationalists" (neo-Nazis) attacked "separatists" (people collecting signatures for a referendum on a federal Ukraine). Rupert Murdoch's Wall Street Journal damned the victims - "Deadly Ukraine Fire Likely Sparked by Rebels, Government Says".

Professor Stephen Cohen, acclaimed as America's leading authority on Russia, wrote, "The pogrom-like burning to death of ethnic Russians and others in Odessa reawakened memories of Nazi extermination squads in Ukraine during world war two. [Today] storm-like assaults on gays, Jews, elderly ethnic Russians, and other 'impure' citizens are widespread throughout Kyiv-ruled Ukraine, along with torchlight marches reminiscent of those that eventually inflamed Germany in the late 1920s and 1930s...

"The police and official legal authorities do virtually nothing to prevent these neo-fascist acts or to prosecute them. On the contrary, Kyiv has officially encouraged them by systematically rehabilitating and even memorialising Ukrainian collaborators with Nazi German extermination pogroms, renaming streets in their honour, building monuments to them, rewriting history to glorify them, and more."

Today, neo-Nazi Ukraine is seldom mentioned. That the British are training the Ukrainian National Guard, which includes neo-Nazis, is not news. (See Matt Kennard's Declassified report in Consortium 15 February). The return of violent, endorsed fascism to 21st-century Europe, to quote Harold Pinter, "never happened ... even while it was happening".

On 16 December, the United Nations tabled a resolution that called for "combating glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fuelling contemporary forms of racism". The only nations to vote against it were the United States and Ukraine.

Almost every Russian knows that it was across the plains of Ukraine's "borderland" that Hitler's divisions swept from the west in 1941, bolstered by Ukraine's Nazi cultists and collaborators. The result was more than 20 million Russian dead.

Setting aside the manoeuvres and cynicism of geopolitics, whomever the players, this historical memory is the driving force behind Russia's respect-seeking, self-protective security proposals, which were published in Moscow in the week the UN voted 130-2 to outlaw Nazism. They are:

- NATO guarantees that it will not deploy missiles in nations bordering Russia. (They are already in place from Slovenia to Romania, with Poland to follow)
- NATO to stop military and naval exercises in nations and seas bordering Russia.
- Ukraine will not become a member of NATO.
- the West and Russia to sign a binding East-West security pact.
- the landmark treaty between the US and Russia covering intermediate-range nuclear weapons to be restored. (The US abandoned it in 2019)

These amount to a comprehensive draft of a peace plan for all of post-war Europe and ought to be welcomed in the West. But who understands their significance in Britain? What they are told is that Putin is a pariah and a threat to Christendom.

Russian-speaking Ukrainians, under economic blockade by Kyiv for seven years, are fighting for their survival. The "massing" army we seldom hear about are the thirteen Ukrainian army brigades laying siege to Donbas: an estimated 150,000 troops. If they attack, the provocation to Russia will almost certainly mean war.

In 2015, brokered by the Germans and French, the presidents of Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France met in Minsk and signed an interim peace deal. Ukraine agreed to offer autonomy to Donbas, now the self declared republics of Donetsk and Luhansk.

The Minsk agreement has never been given a chance. In Britain, the line, amplified by Boris Johnson, is that Ukraine is being "dictated to" by world leaders. For its part, Britain is arming Ukraine and training its army.

Since the first Cold War, NATO has effectively marched right up to Russia's most sensitive border having demonstrated its bloody aggression in Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and broken solemn promises to pull back. Having dragged European "allies" into American wars that do not concern them, the great unspoken is that NATO itself is the real threat to European security.

In Britain, a state and media xenophobia is triggered at the very mention of "Russia". Mark the knee-jerk hostility with which the BBC reports Russia. Why? Is it because the restoration of imperial mythology demands, above all, a permanent enemy? Certainly, we deserve better.

Ukraine has been warring still in the 2 breakaway countries in the Donbas area. That’s why Russia decided to give them protection. Aaron Mate is saying that it continued after the coup. He’s not the only one saying it. I will look for a link. I know you don’t like Jimmy, but he had Aaron on yesterday talking about this. Sorry link is on my phone.

FWIW Ukraine was planning on attacking them in March. According to papers Russia found.

The document is addressed to the heads of the northern Kiev, southern Odessa and western territorial departments of the National Guard of Ukraine.

▪️The order, brought to the command of the National Guard of Ukraine, explains the plan for preparing one of the shock groups for offensive operations in the so-called “Joint Forces Operation” zone in Donbass.
The document approves the organizational structure of the battalion-tactical group of the 4th operational brigade of the National Guard, the organization of its comprehensive support and reassignment to the 80th separate air assault brigade of Ukraine.

▪️I would like to emphasize that since 2016, this formation of the air assault troops of Ukraine has been trained by American and British instructors under the “NATO standard” training programs in Lvov.

▪️In accordance with the order, the Deputy Commander of the National Guard was tasked with organizing joint combat training of the battalion-tactical group of the National Guard as part of the 80th separate air assault brigade of the armed forces of Ukraine from February 7 to February 28, 2022.

I kind of assumed that everyone knew that the front-lines were "frozen" since 2015-16.

As for "fighting" since then, there's been shelling that has happened on almost a weekly basis in the last 6 years. So I'm sure that a few hundred people have been killed in the last 6 years, but it's been nothing like the first couple years of the war.

So yeah, I've been following this conflict for eight years now.

gjohnsit, the impression in the past year is that Zelensky is caught in a vice between NATO, which wants him to arm Nazis and unleash WWIII, and Nazis, who want him to arm Nazis and unleash WWIII. Both controllers want him to use nuclear weapons. He has done nothing to honor the Ukrainian people who voted for him and for his peace platform.

Now, not only the Crimeans and the people of Donbas, but the people of the whole country have to leave. What was a 3 million person refugee exodus from Ukraine several years ago is suddenly 2 million more in one week. Obviously things have not improved.

The declaration of retaking Crimea and Donbas by force, announced publicly and delivered openly, and blasted virally on YouTube last Spring, was the clarifier in case anyone was confused about his prospects for a peaceful future.
