The people's summit

The meeting was held in Chicago this past weekend...sponsored by the Nurses Union. I caught the first bit on Democracy Now. I thought it was an encouraging message to unite and keep pushing the movement forward. I'm disappointed they didn't allow Jill Stein time. I assume it is political maneuvering, but her voice would have given more substance to the conversation. I'll post links and clips below.

I don't know how you feel about these kinds of meetings, but I enjoyed the boost and the optimism. The idea is that even if Bernie was by a miracle to get the nomination, we still have a lot of work to do.

For those of you who had an interest in Nader's Breaking through power meetings they are still streaming on the real news. Here's a link to get you started -

Hope all you N. hemisphere types have a nice shortest night and will enjoy the full strawberry moon.

I do not understand the exclusion of Jill Stein.

"Pushing the Democratic Party to the left," if that's the strategy, has been revealed as a fool's errand, in my view.

Again, a very timely event. Lovely people. Just don't think they are getting the big picture, that unless a people's movement is willing to play hardball, the party elites will nod at your concerns with their fingers crossed behind their backs, and with a hundred excuses why we can't, why not now, we have to Stop Trump before anything else, etc.

That The "People's Summit" is but another ploy to get people back into the Democratic line. Otherwise, why reject an address by Stein?

Vowing To Oppose Everything Trump Attempts.

I agree. I don't want to be part of any movement that silences a voice that shares so many progressive values. That smells bad and I don't trust it.

political posturing seeing themselves as Bernie surrogates... and not wanting to alienate the superstupiddelegates?

My hillbilly hunch anyway.

“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

Just another sheep pen for those formerly known as progressives before Clinton, Inc. co-opted that term, at least im(not so)ho.

Appreciate your efforts, Lookout. Thanks for letting us know that this group, too, is not interested in voices anywhere to the left of the neoliberal/neocon project.

The People's Summit is a perfect example of the liberal left channeling people to the establishment democratic party. As the article says, this was nothing but a fake populist farce to jumpstart support for Clinton and democratic politicians in the election. It wasn't a People's Summit, it was a Democratic party People's Summit.

Back in 2009 on Firedoglake they called it the "veal pen."

Soon after the election, the Administration began corralling the big liberal DC interest groups into a variety of organizations and communication networks through which they telegraphed their wishes — into a virtual veal pen.

...The truth is — they’ve all been sucked into insulating the White House from liberal critique, and protecting the administration’s ability to carry out a neoliberal agenda that does not serve the interests of their members. They spend their time calculating how to do the absolute minimum to retain their progressive street cred and still walk the line of never criticizing the White House.

The Obama administration did whatever it could to browbeat and intimidate progressive interest groups. They were very successful at this in the short term, but the result was the angry electorate we see today. As the saying goes, don't piss on me and tell me it's raining!

. . . everything I watched and read about it was great.

But I was definitely sad that Jill Stein was not there. My only guess is that the organizers are still hoping for a Bernie nomination.
