Music Memories
Let's face it, there are a LOT of 'modern' musicians whose music has been popular, played constantly, collected by music lovers and fans, blasted in every store around, on the radio constantly and so on. These musical stars deserve to be recognized for their contributions to music (playing, writing, singing, whatever) and many of them are at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But, many of them aren't, and recently I found a couple of lists of musicians or bands who aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (see links to these lists below, second paragraph from bottom). The fact that many of the musicians or bands on the lists haven't been recognized by the Hall of Fame shocked me. That might be because some of these bands are personally important to me, I admit, but still...

Huey Lewis and the News (wikipedia entry):
Do you want a new drug? (I Want a New Drug) Do you recognize The Power of Love (is that car where Elon got the idea for the Tesla?)? Heart of Rock and Roll (see below for video)? How's that Heart and Soul? These are all Huey Lewis and the News songs, most from the early-mid 1980s. They had a bunch more hits, and it seems really strange, to me, that they aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band played up until around 2018, when Huey had to retire because he lost his hearing. And they had a bunch more hits than the ones I've mentioned above, plus, the guy who wrote the song for Ghostbusters stole the riff from I Want a New Drug. And that's why I always get those songs confused in my mind!
Heart of Rock and Roll - So very, very familiar... my young adulthood!
A personal story: When I was an undergraduate in college I spent a lot, and I mean a LOT, of time up in San Francisco, Oakland, and Marin County in California going to night clubs. I loved, loved, loved, the music scene. I loved the bands, many of which weren't and never would be famous (although a couple, for instance Huey Lewis and the News or Greg Kihn (The Breakup Song, for example) really hit it), adored dancing on the dance floor, would spend hours in line so I could get right up very close to the stage and dance there. I spent those hours waiting in line doing homework for school. I was not into the scene to meet men or anything, I just wanted to dance and sing, and dance and dance.
Anyway, I was a big fan of Huey Lewis and the News before they became famous, and after they were famous as well, of course. Used to see them regularly in the night clubs, as they were from the Marin County area. We dancers, and there were more than one woman like me who just liked to dance, called Huey 'Hugey'. Being down on the dance floor right at the front of the stage kinda forced that, and I'll leave it there

Working for a Living - yep, nothing changes! This song applies now, in the 1800's, 1990's, 1750's... heh.
So check out the lists of those who haven't been inducted; who've been snubbed. There are a lot of really good and famous artists on those lists. I'm surprised that Los Lobos, Cyndi Lauper, INXS, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Jethro Tull, the Damned, Bryan Adams, Meatloaf... and on and on, have not been inducted. Who are some of the artists that you are surprised aren't there?

It's another busy Thursday for me. Going to a free lunch at a local mexican steakhouse (I didn't know there were such things, but there are apparently). The restaurant is new in town. It should be good. I have to listen to a presentation about some kinda bond company for my parent's trust, but the lunch is free, so I ain't complaining, too much

per the wiki, as of 2023, there are 378 inductees since 1983. That's almost 10 per year.
Many good acts there. The categories are performers, musical influencers, non-
performers, sidemen (musical excellence) and singles.

Although not technically R & R, seems Motown music is under represented.
But I have a bias there, having grown up outside Detroit in the 60's.

War has been nominated several times to be in the Hall of Fame, according to the Wiki list. That they haven't been inducted is weird, but then, again, what do I know?
The Staple Singers were inducted in 1999. Yay! Great music! *dancing around*

I was blown away by this last night, and figured in case it hasn't been posted wanted to share it. Always loved this song. I think an incredible genre switching adaptation.
Obviously Elton loved it, I think "amazing' is what he said to them at the end... and it is.

P.S. Edit to add... Rock hall has always seemed very political to me. Donna Summer IN, Jethro Tull OUT. Didn't Moody Blues JUST get in? After much outrage. It seems any band Jan Werner didn't like wasn't there. J.Geils? A bunch of disco and hip hop is there!

OMG -- that was the best...
rendition of that song that I've ever heard. I was rocking almost headbanging, and kinda crying at the same time (basically because they aren't supposed to be old, neither the members of Metallica or Elton and yet... we are all old!). Thank you so much for that video!
I hope work went well, and was easy and quickly done. And, I agree about membership to the Hall of Fame being political, I think that can explain a lot about who gets in and who doesn't.

Hall of Fame
It's become more of a popularity contest than anything else. I also was raised in a suburb of Detroit. The MC5 is finally getting in, now that all their members are deceased. Was too young to see them but remember a lot of bands which started in Detroit. Can't believe that Jethro Tull is not in. They were huge back in the 70's.
Just wait till you turn 65. You will get invitations to Medicare Advantage presentations constantly. I never went to any after I figured out that there is very little advantage to Medicare Advantage. You might also get them for hearing implements, medical equipment, and those "Help I've fallen, and I can't get up" devices. I did go to the one for cremation services. I figured that it was something that I might actually use.
The only live music venues where
I grew up and still live were always country music venues.
I missed out on many of the cool bands, and the only dancing we ever did was the two-step.

It's still dancing! And a lot of country music artists were and are great.
That footloose video was awesome. I have to admit, in my experience as a young adult, men seldom danced in the clubs, they just watched. I used to dance like those women in the 1984 version of footloose. Often the only men who would dance were the guitar players in the band. They'd jump down on the dance floor and play their guitars while 'dancing' with me. It rocked! Wish I could still dance like the people in the 2011 version of the song

already getting the medicare advantage stuff...
At 61. And, oh my gosh, the hearing implement and medical devices and all those ads and presentations. Not a chance will I go. I ordered something for my mother that she wanted from an old age 'shop' that sends out printed catalogs . Catalogs, every two weeks or more! And now I'm on their list and and on everyone else's. And I don't want any of their stuff! Bleh.

Boy, I could write all day about this, but time is short.
A few things - Groups like the Kingston Trio and Peter Paul and Mary weren't rock groups and didn't play rock, even if they had a crossover or two, or did one rock song (I love rock and roll music). They were folkies, and though there were always crossovers, that doesn't make them or Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton or Phil Ochs rock and rollers. The same goes for the CW crowd and that includes Marty Robbins and Dolly.
Similarly, all the jazz and blues folks aren't R&R even though they all had an influence. Some rare ones might make it as "influence", but that needs to be seriously constrained and Pachecbel hell no. R&R is a type of music and that type is focal. Otherwise, well, it is music, so I guess music per se is an influence, so let's induct Pythagoras because, really, major influence on music there.
Rock is Rock and Roll music. Some rappers have produced an occasional piece of music, but, as a genre, Rap is not music.

I dunno, maybe they should have a category for influencers, like people who influenced rock and roll but didn't play/sing/write rock and roll? Heck, maybe they do have that category. They could put someone like Cab Calloway in that group
I totally agree with this: 'as a genre, Rap is not music'. It's poetry, maybe... but not music.
