OT ~ Welcome to Saturday!

Sit-a-while

where tin-dippers and
sweet water
in cool touches
meet lips
from hand dug wells.

Good morning good people,

"Starting at midnight on January 1, tens of thousands of books (as well as movies, songs, and cartoons) entered the public domain, meaning that people can download, share, or repurpose these works for free and without retribution under US copyright law.

"Per the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998, “corporate” creations (like Mickey Mouse) can be restricted under copyright law for 120 years. But per an amendment to the act, works published between 1923 and 1977 can enter the public domain 95 years after their creation. This means that this is the first year since 1998 that a large number of works have entered the public domain.

"Basically, 2019 marks the first time a huge quantity of books published in 1923—including works by Virginia Woolf, Agatha Christie, and Robert Frost—have become legally downloadable since digital books became a thing. It’s a big deal—the Internet Archive had a party in San Francisco to celebrate. Next year, works from 1924 will enter the public domain, and so-on.

"So, how do you actually download these books? https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/qvq99b/how-to-download-the-bo...

With favouring winds, o'er sunlit seas,
We sailed for the Hesperides,
The land where golden apples grow;
But that, ah! that was long ago.

How far, since then, the ocean streams
Have swept us from that land of dreams,
That land of fiction and of truth,
The lost Atlantis of our youth!

Wither, ah, wither? Are not these
The tempest-haunted Orcades,
Where the sea-gulls scream, and breakers roar,
And wreck and sea-weed line the shore?

Ultima Thule! Utmost Isle!
Here in thy harbors for a while
We lower our sails; a while we rest
From the unending, endless quest.

Ultima Thule ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

comes up on his expiration date? Sorry, that's a sucker bet, we all know it's not a matter of if, just a matter of when.

The corporate enclosure of the commons... I actually like that phrase. Has a ring to it. Not only do they demand our land, they demand our minds as well.

I just worry about the kids who will grow up thinking that OZ is copyright Disney/MGM. We've already managed to corporatize Europe/American Folklore, while simultaneously Bowdlerizing it. Endless remakes, endless retakes, same story, carefully copyright protected until the end of time.

@enhydra lutris and no, I am not making that one up. First edition of the Indiana Jones Role Playing Game.

Honestly, I'd love to see them try to enforce that one these days with the Fascists. Would be a laugh, fucking RIOT.

@smiley7 making things and doing a little writing helped a bit. (Wrote a novel length story for some friends and they like it. Nothing I'd be comfortable sharing, but it was enjoyable. Took an old piece and redid it based off of slightly higher maturity and insight. Felt a lot better.)

However, Pot and Judo and Beating things with a hammer help.

...Disney has an entangled workaround declaring it a Trademark, which is indefinite as long as merchandise is in production or sold. At least that's my recollection. Over the years, Disney has been very aggressive about protecting Mickey. I vaguely recall them going after a postman who had tattoos of various Disney characters who happened to make the local news. Corporations. Can't live with them and can't fit them in the woodchipper.

There's another side to the copyright story. It happens at times that authors or their publishers sometimes do not execute the copyright of a book correctly. This was the case with Beatrix Potter, also with JR Tolkien. So these books sat out there naked. But there is/was a code of honor among publishers not to exploit them, but allow the original publisher or author's heirs to direct those rights.

On another note, some publishers specialize in public domain works, like Penguin. They maintain inventory and have vast catalogues. Practically speaking, any publisher can elbow in on the business and publish their own versions for sale. And some do. But Penguin has very high design and production standards that keeps them on top.

Finally, when someone creative reads a forgotten book, finds something to treasure about it, and would like to reintroduce it to a modern audience, I think that's a fine thing. Sometimes a refreshed design, or illustrations, or new introductions or a celebrity forward can bring it to life again. So, the book's new champion can put it all together and get the book published again. He or she would not be the author, of course, but instead the "packager" and the owner of that edition. I'm certain the original authors, if one could ask them, would be most pleased to be reborn into a new generation of readers.

(Thanks, Smiley, for a great topic.)

@Pluto's Republic to when some of those SF paperbacks from the 30s get released into the public domain. Space opera as far as the eye can see. Change a few names and you've got the next Star Wars Script without having to wade through the PC filter police! Smile

distracted this yer and haven't jumped out there browsing and downloading yet. I've already been grabbing stuff off and on from the Internet Archive, which I highly recommend. It as more than just books, too, though that's mostly what I grab there. Address/link is pretty easy to remember: https://archive.org Note that they're ".org". I donate annually at least once, during their annual fund drive, I recommend that others do likewise, because they provide an important public service of preserving our culture and knowledge AND making it available for free.

Farmers' market today, and then, with luck, we put all the xmas stuff away and I get my shop back. A week of rain is supposed to start today, so it will be quite nice to be able to get to work on indoor projects again.

for supporting the cause.

Unfortunately, i'm nursing a bug of some kind: pain behind the eyes, upset tummy, aches and fatigue, but no fever? Came on late Thursday. I'm dog-sitting two little ones and a Tom cat and they keep me company and sleep under the covers with me.

Have a crock pot going with a Boston Butt of pork; trying a new recipe, first time using a crock pot as i've never had one.

Hoping the tummy settles down by evening.

Have a great day and week!

are good for some things, not so good for others, but a real godsend when yo're relly busy or going to be out all day. There are some public domain cookbooks for them floating round, but a lot of the recipes are variations on the same basic stew.

Have a good one.

Finally a day with sunshine...headed to the 60's. I hope all the rain we've been getting is snow in the NC highlands, Smiley, and the skiing is great!

Trade day was sparse despite the nice weather. Did get some nice avocados and limes. We had guests at our music session last night and swapped several good tunes and songs. I would guess the new public domain release includes music and songs.

Well I'm glad to have a couple of days of dry weather so all the standing water can soak into the earth. Today already beckons of spring here in this corner of the tri-states (TN, AL, GA).

Have a good one everybody.

with business this season. Thankfully, we had the early cold weather and big snow and built up a solid base because it's been raining and foggy most days with unseasonably high temperatures.

I've not worked too much, especially this week, only a few hours on Tuesday, which, in a way is okay with me as i've grown too old to endure the crowds; it's worse than Disney on a busy day.

Hoping to hear your music someday when we can manage a get together.

Enjoy the sun and have a great day and week.

Good to know where alligators keep their baby shoes, too. Wish I had learned where Obama kept his comfortable shoes, but that remains a mystery and, I suspect, always will.

with the unions vaporized; and all this brings to mind that in my career, we were entitled to one new pair of shoes per year from Actor's Equity. Never went to get a pair, but do recall the notices for pick up in the city.

And on shoes, one of my father's expressions: " i don't care how much a pair of shoes cost, i want to be able to afford a pair." The Great Depression cast impressions for sure.

Pressure points on the belly just outside of the big long muscle helps to drain thm. Don’t have to be too fussy where you press. Both side with all five fingers up and down. Not sur this is clear. Lol. Anyway take good care.
