OT ~ Welcome to Saturday!

Sit-a-while
on swinging porch
where tin-dippers and
sweet water
in cool touches
meet lips
from hand dug wells.

Good morning good people!
May peace and love touch each of you this coming week as we celebrate Xmas with family and friends.

The magi, as you know, were wise men—wonderfully wise men—
who brought gifts to the newborn Christ-child. They were the first to
give Christmas gifts. Being wise, their gifts were doubtless wise ones.
And here I have told you the story of two children who were not wise.
Each sold the most valuable thing he owned in order to buy a gift for
the other. But let me speak a last word to the wise of these days: Of all
who give gifts, these two were the most wise. Of all who give and receive
gifts, such as they are the most wise. Everywhere they are the wise ones.
They are the magi. ~ O. Henry

A cold coming we had of it,
Just the worst time of the year
For a journey, and such a journey:
The ways deep and
the weather sharp,
The very dead of winter.'
And the camels galled, sore-footed, refractory,
Lying down in the melting snow.
There were times we regretted
The summer palaces on slopes, the terraces,
And the silken girls bringing sherbet.
Then the camel men cursing and grumbling
And running away, and wanting their liquor and women,
And the night-fires going out, and the lack of shelters,
And the cities hostile and the towns unfriendly
And the villages dirty and
charging high prices:
A hard time we had of it.
At the end we preferred to travel all night,
Sleeping in snatches,
With the voices singing in our ears, saying
That this was all folly.
Then at dawn we came down to a temperate valley,
Wet, below the snow line, smelling of vegetation;
With a running stream and a water-mill beating the darkness,
And three trees on the low sky,
And an old white horse galloped away in the meadow.
Then we came to a tavern with vine-leaves over the lintel,
Six hands at an open door dicing for pieces of silver,
And feet kicking the empty wine-skins.
But there was no information, and so we continued
And arrived at evening, not a moment too soon
Finding the place; it was, you may say, satisfactory.
All this was a long time ago, I remember,
And I would do it again, but set down
This set down
This: were we led all that way for birth or death?
There was a birth, certainly,
We had evidence and no doubt.
I had seen birth and death,
But had thought they were
different; this birth was
Hard and bitter agony for us, like death, our death.
We returned to our places, these kingdoms,
But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation,
With an alien people clutching their gods.
I should be glad of another death.

"Journey of the Magi ~ T.S. Eliot

~ Andrew Wyeth

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her ’kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
“Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle,
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night.”

~ Clement Moore, 1823

Handel's Messiah is my all time favorite Christmas tune. I was going to post the Chorus yesterday, but couldn't find the version that I had in mind. (Actually, I found it, but it was no longer available due to copyright restrictions.)

Had a bit of news about Medicare, but it can wait until next week, since I don't want to spoil the mood of your excellent and festive OT. (Having said that, at my house we're quite relieved that the 4% automatic Pay-Go Medicare cut was waived late Thursday/early Friday morning.)

Hope you, your Mom, and your Son and his Family have a wonderful Christmas!

Feliz Navidad To All!

Mollie

sentiments, the poems and pictures. Still sleepy pre-dawn here, but 40 degrees, a welcome jump from yesterday's 28. I guess I can say happy holidays to all, different holidays for different folks and maybe but a day or two off work for some and maybe some don't even get that, but we can all focus on what is good and beautiful.

'Tis the day before the day before the day folks celebrate what they celebrate. That's something. For those like myself who are not yet fully awake on this glorious celebratory morn --

"Happy Joy" and for being here!

Eliot's "Journey of the Magi" asks many questions and i've long understood his Christian position, but i feel a curve ball he loaded into the poem for the reader's of his time that i've yet to fully work out, hence the poem has long intrigued me.

O. Henry, on the other hand, gets it right, imho.

May the spirit of giving last beyond the holidays changing modern dispensations; especially in the minds of politicians.

'Tis the time of year
when many of us fear
others have high expectations
which can result in agitation
cuz one did not receive,
on that "grandest" of eves,
the gift of all gifts
so the consequence was swift
which is why I stopped,
and decided to opt
out of the madness
that always lands us
in the doghouse of xmas
"present," christened (say it!) consumermas!

Feeble attempt at a sonnet this cold morning!

Have a beautiful say, everyone! Pleasantry

Thank you for the OT music and verse.

This morning while still dark I listened to two owls hoot back and forth to each other. When I made it outside with the dog in tow, I actually got to see the owls. They were way up in the top of the canopy just catching the first rays of the sun. It was fabulous and such a treat.

I'm going to repeat Marilyn's wish because I appreciate it so much;

May we all purposely embrace beauty this week. See it, find it, feel it, give it.

Vivaldi, i love Vivaldi; he's included in the list of people i'd liked to have known personally; what a spirit he must have had to create such moving music.

Thank you for being here and please keep the good music coming!

@randtntx This is stunningly beautiful from start to finish. I listened to it last night with the earphones, then played it on the speakers today so that partner could also listen. So lovely, and a wonderful complement to the Handel. Thank you so much!

family in the high desert of Antelope Vally, California. 17 degrees this morning, not what we have been used to in our first vacation from Christmas. We will start meandering towards home Tuesday bearing gift cards for everyone. Been gone since Thanksgiving, through the Oregon Outback to the coast. To the high desert, over the mountains and through the low deserts and back to the So. Cal. coastline. Now back in the high desert.
It's been great not having to endure the hustle and bustle of "The Great Shopping Season".
I could get used to this.
Happy Holidays everyone.
