Meghalaya’s Living Root Bridges

~

Found in south Meghalaya, the root bridges are built by the Khasi and Jaintia tribes by weaving the roots of the Indian rubber (Ficus elastica) tree into suspension bridges over rivers. These sturdy bridges span between 15 and 250 feet and could take as long as 10 to 15 years to gain the perfect shape. Most of them have a single span but some have more than one, such as the famous Umshiang Double-Decker Root Bridge (top photo).

Where’s the Truth? How the CIA Shapes the Minds of Americans

Like Orwell’s Ministry of Truth, propaganda is pouring out of the US that is shaping our perceptions of the war in Ukraine. It is produced by the CIA, it is pronounced by the State Department and it is published by the media. It is coming from everywhere.

A living root bridge over a stream at Riwai in Meghalaya, India.

~

Built over several centuries, the root bridges come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Different techniques have been employed to chisel these exotic bridges over streams and rivers. Occasionally, the roots are simply pulled and twisted by hand to merge with each other for the desired structure. They are also carved by making frames out of wood and bamboo, and then training the young roots out across these temporary structures. The roots are nurtured until they are able to endure the weight of people walking on them.

Love the living root bridges. Now that's working with nature.

Excellent Arendt quote. The constant lies have also have damaged peoples' critical thinking skills. I understand you can't trust the CIA sponsored news, but I have eyes and a memory and more than one brain cell. The (supposed) support of Ukrainian Nazis blows my mind...especially the in EU which is literally committing suicide. Oh well, the fall of the Empire is interesting, and sadly deadly.

Cold weather is about to close up shop. Perhaps the last day of row covers...only had the tomatoes undercover last night. Planting marigolds and some peppers today. Lost one Brussels sprout plant to voles...put out my trap yesterday. I have to put eggplants under insect cloth to keep off the flea beetles, but they are still in a flat till next month.

So thanks for the OT. Hope everyone has a good day!

Still in the roller coaster spring temperature ride. Winds are wicked strong, making it seem much colder.

Re: Civil Rights act of 1871 (aka the KKK Act) has morphed into the police immunity act by judicial fiat.
Go figure.

This is a perverse irony. A law meant to protect Blacks from capricious state action enacted during a nakedly racist era has now evolved through judicial interpretation into a law that makes capricious state action less likely to face sanction in a more enlightened era. A law that makes no mention of immunity is now somehow used as the basis for providing police immunity.

Off to wrestle with the spring rush at the yard again today.
Hope y'all have a good 'un!

There is fertile ground to wage information warfare in the U.S. on Ukraine. In all of America’s wars, ignorance of foreign affairs plays a big role. Americans’ lack of knowledge of other countries ..

~

The lack of knowledge of this history makes Americans vulnerable to propaganda cloaking American expansionism. In the context of the Ukraine war this ignorance plays an important part in the susceptibility of the American public to war propaganda.

just lost my comment to spotty intertube connection. Somewhere out there there is a brilliant comment floating about.

I've lost my steam so will just say; thanks for the OT and the dose too! Yay. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods.

bridges, spanning distance, time and technology all in one swell foop. Would that we could do more of that.

One can fall amazingly far behind on chores, mail, tasks and all that in a very few days, but with careful avoidance one can also fall way out of touch with the news of the day and, hopefully, remain that way for a while, so it balances out.

Many a savant has said that the proper purpose of government is to do for the people that which they cannot effectively do for themselves. It has occurred to me that we can, all of us, individually and collectively, fuck (things) up, as it were, so it would seem obvious that this is not a proper function of government. Since ours seems to do little else, I suggest that something is grievously amiss afoot, Watson.

Ah well, stuff awaits --

be well and have a good one

Britain has authorized the Julian Assange transfer to America. It’s now up to the Home Secretary to drill in the final nail. Britain's court reversed the ruling that he shouldn’t be transferred here because of how we would treat him. America promised that they wouldn’t put him in isolation…unless he broke some rule.

Recall that Julian had a stroke not too long ago and that he hasn’t been allowed to get medical treatment for years. And because Hillary and democrats lied about her emails the shitlibs will cheer this decision instead of being appalled like they should be.

Hannah seemed to be channeling Orwell. Once again the Democrat’s hypocrisy for 4 years about Trump’s war on the press is standing out for the world to see, but it’s obvious that the world doesn’t give a rat’s ass about free speech or much of anything besides what the ‘rule based order' tells them to.

Shitlibs are outraged that Musk might let Twitter have free speech again, because Trump might get back on it.

Which AIPAC/MIC/pharma/bank bought politician are you going to vote for? Don’t be surprised when nothing changes.

Thank you QMS, and all. Yesterday for the first time I started feeling okay about leaving California if I ever have to, I don't feel connected to anywhere else so it was hard to imagine uprooting my crappy life and planting it elsewhere. Now I can. Members here are so supportive, thanks a lot.

Goodbye old era, no more printing presses in Sonoma County.

Press Democrat enters new era as Sonoma County printing press closes, production moves to new site

... “It’s sad and exciting at the same time,” said Bill Fuiten, a press supervisor with just shy of 30 years’ experience in Rohnert Park. “Sad because I still love my job. Working here, especially in the last 10 years, is like watching a really good friend die super slowly. Now maybe I can equate it to finally putting them in the ground.”

The PD printing press was “a state of the art facility, the best in its class” when it opened, said Troy Niday, who oversees the plant as Sonoma Media Investments’ chief operating officer. It’s no longer that. The Chronicle’s presses are much newer. But aging machinery isn’t the problem. This press could operate another 10-15 years, according to Niday.

The move to the East Bay has much more to do with the economic reality of the news business, where readership has been gravitating from print to digital spaces for years.

They look so old! My age. Those were good jobs. Welcome the new digital space overlords.

The day turned out to be incredibly intense. Seems every situation involved getting some documents produced for some elderly person headed for assisted living. Deeds, wills, estate planning documents...people so old and infirm, my interviews took place with me at the car in the parking lot.
My assistant did a notary job outside by a client's vehicle in a light rain, as the 91 yr old client couldn't get out of the car.
Anyway, I can usually say a hello before noon. Well, not this day.
Ironic that Nap and Hitler shared the same birthday, and that Russia fucked both of them up bigly.
