Off in the woods on a lake this week in Maine, so sorta scattered. A bit here and a
bit there. Hope you all can find something of interest to add to this open thread.
Will try to mediate as conditions allow.

Staying on a path appropriately called Porcupine Ridge, have seen the critters
bristling about. Eagles, Loons, Gray Heron, Owls and turtles too! Think a wolf
was howling last night. Only waiting for the dancing moose ..

@QMS Donald Trump was born. They sang happy birthday at the Versailles restaurant in Little Havana after his arraignment. Thought it was funny when Dershowitz said he wouldn't second guess Trump's PR strategy.

we are west of Augusta in the Belgrade Lakes region
this body of water is called Long Pond
(looks like a lake to me)

no wind today, so my sailing craft sits idle

at the moment, but there were some historic battles today

in 1285, forces led by Prince Trần Quang Khải of the Trần dynasty destroyed most of the invading Mongol naval fleet in a battle at Chuong Duong. This was the second Mongol invasion of Vietnam.

1645 was the battle of Naseby where twelve thousand royalist troops were beaten by fifteen thousand roundhead soldiers.

The little known Franco-Spanish war was effectively ended in 1658 when Turenne and the French army won a decisive victory over the Spanish at the battle of the Dunes. Turenne, fwiw, kicked a lot of ass over a fifty year career and is one of only 6 French Marshals ever promoted to Marshal General of France.

In 1822 Charles Babbage kicked off the IT Rebellion by proposing a difference engine to the Royal Astronomical Society

In 1840 assorted settlers in Sonoma, California kicked off the Bear Flag Revolt against Mexico and proclaimed The Bear Flag Republic
