Open Thread - Thurs 20 July 2023: Yard Rock and Unions
Open Thread:
Yard Rock for President:
Lee Camp is supporting someone (some thing?) for President. The campaign of the Yard Rock makes a lot of sense and the campaign website is short and sweet with a list of issues Yard Rock wants to highlight. Check it out at https://yardrock2024.com/ !
Some Union News:
As we all know and, I think, support, modern day unions still exist and do things - often very good things for their workers. For example, there's a dockworkers' strike, about attempts to renew the industry wide collective agreement which ended 31 March, going on in British Columbia - so, the entire Canadian coast on the Pacific (as a side note, how did this huge ocean, not 'pacific' at all, get it's name? Magellan, that's how. Yea, I got distracted. Anyway...). The union striking is the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada. They want an end to, or reduction in contracting out their work to others, protection from over-automation and cost of living and inflation protections (here's the strike notice). The strike started at the end of June, went on hold on 13 July after mediation negotiations and started up again on 18/19 July after the negotiations were rejected by a vote of the union members.

The American part of the ILWU on the west coast has refused to unload cargo bound for Canada in a show of solidarity, which I think is cool! If you look into this strike, you'll see announcements and propaganda from the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA). Interesting, but, this is an association of the owners, not the workers. Just keep that in mind!
Some good union, celtic, punkish music!

And that's what I've got for Thursday this week. Vote for the Yard Rock! And support the dockworkers if you can! Thanks for reading and here's the open thread - and remember, everything is interesting if you dive deep enough, so tell us about where you're diving!

Happy Thursday!
Hope everyone's day is going well.
Gotta take the dog to the vet's (just for routine nail stuff) and work in the greenhouse. Those tomatoes have hit 8 to 10 feet tall and are collapsing into the 'aisles'. I have to crawl in to water them. So, we are going to be putting up wood, instead of string, supports. The tomatoes can collapse against those :). The plants are full of fruit, some of it ripe, some almost ripe, some green, some just tiny. The peppers are about 2 to 4 feet tall, and the first of them are ripening. Yay, summer!
Post whatever you want below. We wanna read it!

Good morning...
Yard rock sounds similar to Giant Meteor...
I'm voting for nobody...
NOBODY knows how to run your life better than you do.
NOBODY knows how to manage your business better than you do.
NOBODY knows how to educate your children better than you do.
NOBODY knows how to plan your retirement better than you do.
NOBODY can be trusted to spend your tax-dollars wisely.
NOBODY will save you if you vote him into political office.
Vote for NOBODY!
Sounds like a good candidate. Speaking of which, RFK is testifying in congress today.
July 20th at 9 a.m. Eastern Time, Mr. Kennedy will testify at a House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government about the federal government’s disturbing role in censoring American citizens.
Statement from Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.:
“Recent revelations in the Twitter Files and Missouri v. Biden show how deeply institutionalized government censorship has become. “It is dressed up in euphemisms like, ‘working with our partners in tech,’ but make no mistake, this is a systematic program to control what Americans can say and think. As such, it is antithetical to democracy. In a democracy, the people tell the government what to think, not the other way around.”
Yesterday, 102 Democrats signed a letter asking that Mr. Kennedy be disinvited from the hearing. Quite ironic to censor someone testifying at a hearing on censorship.
Thanks for the OT and hope everyone has a good day!
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Giant Meteor or Nobody!
Both sound good to me!
I haven't been following the RfK Jr stuff super closely. But, what if he were to win? What would those demoncrats think then? Ohh, I know, he will NOT win, NOT a chance, because he doesn't toe their line. But what if he did????
I guess a few calls to the CIA/FBI have to happen.

May be, being always on the wrong side, solves the problem ...
So, I try to leave Germany as soon as I can handle.
I wished I had never come here and be literally emprisoned. I know who I wish would to get punished for all the shit I see happening here.
Have you ever been in a country that is in war? I mean in it with bombs falling left and right from you?
According to my son, it is no fun.
https://www.euronews.com/live
I have not been to a country at war...
Not yet at least. I've been to a few that were close to going to war. It's hard. I hope things work out for you and you can leave soon!

Yardrock campaign song
LOL good humor to all, happy to be here this fine morning. Here's my obvious idea for yardrock24 campaign slogan/song. Turn it up to hear the dust in the grooves
David Essex - Rock On - 45 rpm 1973
and here's a cover with imagery:
Rickie Lee Jones & Madeleine Peyroux - RockOn
Rock on C99%ers! keep dancing planting harvesting. Have fun. Thank you for sharing. It will be 104F here today according to the forecast. Feels Hotter than July! Jam on... Power to the people, right on.
Vino Farms vineyard management company to pay $1.4 million to settle lawsuit over worker pay, breaks
Vineyard management = ye olde Field Bosses down South, in my opinion. Workers have "labor advocates" but no organizations, no unions as far as I can tell. I think it would be better for all to organize and strike all the exploitative owners in to oblivion this year during harvest time... Huelga! For Great Justice. dream on
Peace and Love
Hola eyo, and good humor, peace and love to
you too.
Vino farms is a suspect name ab initio and sounds like a jumped up labor contractor, the worst.
take care and have a good one

Absolutely...
You are so right with this statement 'Vino farms is a suspect name ab initio and sounds like a jumped up labor contractor, the worst.'

Your assessment of vineyard management...
is right on the spot. It's like that here up in wa state too, in many places. And the fruit picking! Gah. See, most people don't seem to realize that without abuseable, exploitable, no-rights, 'temporary' migrants we'd have no produce. There's few Americans that would or even could work under such conditions to pick fruit and veg.
Great campaign song, btw! And thanks for stopping by!

200 years from now
people are going to think that the 21st century obsession with "jobs" was insane. Why would free people demand, no beg to spend their entire waking lives reduced to slavery?
On to Biden since 1973
I agree about the future of 'jobs'...
200 years from now. But I know why we are obsessed right now. There's nothing else, no other way to eat, sleep in a decent bed, have shelter. One has to make money to 'afford' that, and the only way to make money for most is a 'job', in this country. But, we all know that. I wish it were different!

I call Bullshit. That is just a repackaged Pet Rock.
They'll claim it is recycled, but that is BS because it isn't being returned to its natural environment. Furthermore, I think it is a captive, possibly confined for 48 years now. Really - here's some relevant testimony.

More great music!!
Maybe it is an old pet rock, I think I'd still vote for it (at this point!) :).

Only Russia is forbidden to interfere in elections
.
It’s been okay for Israel to not only meddle in our elections, but also to decide who can even run in them. But here’s the kicker.
Maine's governor VETOES bill that would have prevented foreign governments from spending money on Maine's elections
And of course it’s okay that we not only meddle in country’s elections, but we can also remove anyone that we don’t like.
Oh yeah and government has no problem with foreign countries buying land in America and especially in states that are in droughts so they can grow water consuming crops to send home.
The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists.
~Hannah Arendt
Maybe it's turn about is fair play?
I'm saying that very sarcastically, of course. But if the USA can put money into foreign government elections, then foreign governments should be able to do that here. After all, the filthy, disgustingly, rich people have to control everything with their gold, don't they? No matter the country?
I hate that hay is being raised in drought ridden USA places to send other countries. Thanks for bringing that point up!

I don't think that he had a meaningful option. The key
case involved, who else, the City of Berkeley. It is US v Berkeley or something like that. The City of Berkeley enacted a boycott of South Africa over Apartheid. The Feds and the court said jurisdiction over foreign affairs rest solely with feds and lesser bodies must butt out.

Howdy caucus
Hi all, Hope it's all good out there!
I am a rock and I love this song...
Hey Sima, I have used garden jute strung from roof, then a loose loop (to not constrict growth/flow) tied around the stem to support the tall ones. They'll need the support if lots of big fruit. May take a couple on a big vine.
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.
both - Albert Einstein
hanging stems to support fruits
is that like hanging chads to support republicans?
no, didn't think so. I harvest long bamboo and lean it
against the wall, tying-up the branches along the way
as needed with jute twine
cheers!
question everything
Ohh Man, I love that song too!!
Was 4 years old when it came out. A song of my whole life. So there, another great campaign song for the YardRock!
I like the idea of the jute holding the tomatoes from the roof. Maybe we can come up with something like that, not from the roof (can't do that because it's glass, so no place to put the jute) but from beams across the supports. Right now, putting up 1 by 1/2 inch boards to hold the toms up has worked. For a bit

Oh, man...
The rock is going to have a *hell* of a time in Colorado. Everyone here knows that he's not really from Boulder, and that is the oppo researcher's dream. We can't be having any furrin' impostor minerals round these parts...
Had a friend a few years ago who always won at the county fair with her gourds and melons- they were always beautiful and blemish-free. She accomplished that by simply slipping the small fruit into the legs of retired pantyhose, which she then trellised up so that the fruit never touched the ground as they grew to plump maturity... Boutique farming, so to speak!
Twice bitten, permanently shy.
Maybe YardRock's team...
Has to find a way to accommodate Boulder somehow? Hmmm. Always troubles in the politics!!!
Hanging up the melons sounds like a good idea to me! I have never competed with the things we've grown. Tend to eat them all first!

Thanks for the OT sima!
I always used stands/baskets from Tractor Supply.
As for dumb as a rock politicians we either vot for, or against, or don't vote at all, there is this rock:
"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981
Ok, this is another great campaign song!!!
GO YardRock!
Tractor Supply is good. They moved into this area of the country a few years ago, I've got a store only about 30 minutes drive away. We've got to get some fencing from them in the next few weeks!
Have a great weekend, it is good to 'see' you!
