Feel free to add substance to this thread.

Whenever I would take profiling test like Briggs-Myers, they would show that I do not like to color inside the lines. Rules and schedules are just rough guidelines.

Funny that I would be a bluesman since it is a structured form.

Don't let the oligarchs operate in darkness.

Add observations below.

Rainy day here in beautiful western NC. Our second round of company is coming in today, one in the afternoon and two more early this evening. We are hoping the rain moves out of here in time for us to do the monthly gallery walk downtown this evening. Tomorrow morning I am having a breakfast for our guests and neighbors who are riding the Mountains to Coast one week bicycle ride beginning on Sunday. It has been a busy couple of days here as we had company Wednesday and Thursday. The gulfgal B & B is operating more efficiently that I thought it could. Blum 3

Hope to be able to check in occasionally today and tomorrow. I enjoyed the theme of your music today, Tim. Good

We are supposed to have 3" between now and Monday. HS football was moved up to Thursday night. We need the rain. The trees are all looking sad.

I have a house full this weekend too. Thing1, Thing2 and Thing2_boyfriend are all here.

I don't really follow domestic politics
very closely, but thought that those
who do might be interested in this
morning's announcement Boehner is
resigning not only from his House
leadership position but from Congress
entirely, effective Oct. 30.

And, oh, yeah, good morning Tim and

impossible for any leader to manage. I am no fan of Boehner but the writing is on the wall. I think Boehner had gotten tired of the threats of government shut down. He hinted at retirement in an interview on Thursday after the Pope's speech. There has been a mounting opposition to his leadership, driven by the whackiest of the whackos. Tighten your seat belts. I think the ride is going to get a lot rougher.

I had also read that he originally intended to retire at the end of 2014, but when Cantor was beaten in the primary, he decided to stay on a while.

Bargain."

Remember, California Dem Rep George Miller pulled that stunt--negotiating the destruction of the Multiemployer Pension Plans within weeks of his last Congressional term--last year.

Bloomberg News has already forecast a "deal" between Boehner and Pelosi, a la the "Doc Fix."

More on that when we get our pizza ordered, and 'Mister B' walked. Wink

This would be the perfect setup--Boehner's on his way out, and would have a super cushy lobbying position waiting on him (not that he wouldn't, anyway), and the 'horse race' surrounding the election of the next Speaker would conveniently further 'muddy the waters' for the casual political observer.

Therefore, allowing a bipartisan 'Grand Bargain' to pass virtually under the radar (I fear).

Oh, and here's what the President was quoted saying about the "Doc Fix" legislation that Boehner and Pelosi negotiated (to the detriment of the American People).

They drew effusive praise from Obama, who thanked everyone in attendance, including Boehner, for “a gorgeous piece of legislation.”

Yeah, real 'gorgeous.'

It included further means testing Medicare (which is probably unavoidable, but I object to it being carried out deceptively), charging for home health care visits which previously did not incur additional charges, and 'negative' reform of Medigap Insurance plans [high value plans]--many of which the lowest income seniors depend upon in order to meet the Medicare deductibles. And, without the ability to meet deductibles, many seniors may simply forfeit obtaining medical care altogether.

*Sigh*

Glad you've gotten to drop by more lately, Tim. Thanks for today's OT!

Hey, hope Everyone has a nice evening!

This Sunday

Catalans head to polls on Sunday for one of the more unusual and important regional elections of recent times.

For many Catalans, the Sept. 27 ballot is the definitive vote on independence from Spain that they were denied last year by the Constitutional Court. For the central government in Madrid, it’s a flight of fancy by regional President Artur Mas with no legal basis that is distracting officials from the important business of fixing up the region’s economy.

Things have settled down in Spain now that their economy is growing again, so don't expect anything dramatic.

In another sign that U.S. states are recovering from the Great Recession, a handful are triggering mechanisms that repay taxpayers when coffers overflow, and the wealthiest are receiving the most.

At least seven states have such laws. Oregon this year paid back $402 million to taxpayers. Colorado and North Carolina set off similar triggers. The product of taxpayer revolts aimed at checking government’s growth, the laws typically call for a rebate or reduction in income-tax rates when revenue exceeds benchmarks.

Not just because of who benefits, but also it is poor fiscal management. Every state or government entity should have a rainy day fund or something for contingencies. Many of these same states do not have enough money for their education systems and other programs that they have severely cut. This is just another version of drowning government in a bathtub by making the tub smaller and smaller.

I grew up with Astrid Lindgren's children books, before they were ever produced for TV. I only knew my books. I think I started reading them in 1956/7. "The children of Bullerby" with Lasse and Bosse.

Two new books with Astrid Lindgren's WWII diaries are published. Among other it says:

The second book, a publication of her wartime diaries, reveals how accurate this portrait was. Both works are contemporary literary documents that depict Lindgren as an author who used her humor to contend with the horrors of war, and as someone whose desire to tell stories was partly a result of the determination to keep her chin up in the face of adversity.

After hesitating for years, Lindgren's family decided to publish her diaries. During the war years, the author filled 17 notebooks with her diary entries, and pasted newspaper cuttings, food ration coupons and flyers in between the pages. She assiduously kept her diary for six years, interweaving the events of her own life with world politics.

In the first entry, dated Sept. 1, 1939, she writes: "The war began today. No one wanted to believe it." In the last entry, written on New Year's Eve in 1945, she writes: "I wish myself a happy new year! Myself and my family! And the entire world, if possible, but that is probably asking too much."

I still remember how my mother described the first day of WWII. She said she set at a small fountain in Berlin near her workplace enjoying the sun in her lunch break, letting her naked feet hanging into the water, when she heard of it. All she was thinking: "What? No way! Now what does that mean?" (She was 20 years old in 1939). She couldn't imagine what it meant. I think a couple of weeks later she did. My father had to go "Reich Labor Service", which involved digging deep ditches near the German/Dutch border. He was (21 years of age) and pulled out of his "apprenticeship" as an insurance broker in Hannover at a company. Afterwards he was drafted into the military. Boom.

Then both of them just thought about getting married asap.

Memories. I will read Lindgren's war diaries for sure. I like the idea that she was a bit of a radical. Smile

The US Army is issuing a shoulder
patch for service members fighting
against the Islamic State.

http://www.stripes.com/news/army/army-to-issue-shoulder-patch-for-islami...

I don't know whether this awarding a
uniform patch for participation in an
undeclared war is a first or not, but
can patches for Special Forces
participating in "actions" in Africa
be far behind?

Speaking of which, has anyone heard
or read any follow-up to the JSOC troops
the US sent to #BringBackOurGirls?
What happened with that Michelle
Obama-/Twitter-inspired mission?
I've read several times that not one of
the girls has ever been found, but
nothing about whether US Special
Forces are still deployed seeking them
and their kidnappers.

The most effective censorship is all-
too-often media silence.

This is one of the last I heard of it.

Exactly 365 days have passed since the girls were snatched from their boarding school dormitories in the dead of night in Chibok, northeastern Nigeria. They are still missing.
For this we should all feel shame: shame that we live in a world where the lives of young girls can be shattered with impunity by fanatical thugs. Shame that when such horrendous acts occur, our collective attention span is so fleeting.

One update

Nearly 60 girls have managed to escape their captors since then, but the majority of them are still being held.

In other words, those girls had to help themselves because no one else will.
